Been thinking about picking up a new guitar processor (or
perhaps even a new amp, just for some different tones & colors,
and MAN there's so much stuff out there! Haven't been shopping
for anything like this in awhile, so I was wondering if anyone
has any items of this nature that they've found they really
like?
Not looking for any wild & crazy EFX, necessarily, but if it
has that too, that's fine.
Any comments on:
**Line6 Tone Port UX2? I saw someone posted something about that
setup here a week or so ago... how's that working out?
**Any other Line6 stuff? I tried one of their Spider combo amps
a few months back, and it seemed OK for what it did.
**TC Electronics rackmount guitar processors?
**Any floormount multi-EFX thingies you're using that really
rock?
**Any new amps you've heard that blew you away?
Not really interested in the Variax or other guitar-modeling
stuff - I've got enough of a variety of guitars, it's just the
stuff to run them through that I'm interested in.

Theres always been the Line6 vs SansAmp debate. They're both great tools..
if you can, get one of each. :) I love the SansAmp second only to actual
tubes.

GuitarRig 2 is amazing. I work with a guitar player that likes his better
than his amps. There is a latency isue, though. Slight, but bothers some
players.
That said, it's pretty hard to beat a 65 Deluxe Reverb with some Robert Keeley
stomp boxes in front of it....

Emulations: I've heard some decent sounds out of the PODXT Live floor
unit, used by another guitar player in one of my heavier bands. The
Digitech GNX4 rocks for me at shows plus it does looping, multitrack
recording and guitar FX. The guitar amp/cab emulator in Logic is capable
of some excellent tones, and the ability to change amp/cab models later
in the mixing process is really useful.
Analog: If you can find an ART Power Plant, it handles heavy metal palm
muting better than anything else I've used. My GK250ML amp has taken on
a new life driving a 2-12 cab - it really sings once you do some of the
internal adjustments. My old hotrodded blackface Bassman 50 is a great
benchmark for programming the new fangled stuff.

That was probably my post you were referring to re: the Line6 Toneport UX2.
Well, I'm happy to say that I spent quite a bit of time on Saturday with
it and am extremely happy with the product. I'll also admit that I was a
VERY early adopter of POD and my live rig is a PODxt through an Atomic Reactor
18-watt tube amplifier.
The TP UX2 is a great deal for the money. At $199 you're really getting a
lot for your money. Only downside is that it requires a fairly fast host
computer (PC or Mac) as, unlike the POD family, the Toneport relies on the
computer's CPU for all of it's processing. From what I can tell, the TP is
simply a box with some I/O ports, A/D & D/A, a couple of meters and knobs.
I ran my guitars straight into the UX2 and out of the S/PDIF connection into
a MEC and the sound coming out of my Mackie 824s and Sony 7506s was awesome.
There are also a number (4) of tone packs that you can purchase from Line6
that add amp, speaker, and effects emulations. I'll probably buy them this
week as a friend who's running a PODxt Live has them and says thay're awesome.
(Even though he's a dyed-in-the-wool PT guy I still trust him!).
I haven't tried the mic preamp or LA2A emulations yet. Hopefully, I'll find
some time this week to check those out.

Hey Neil, I've tried to stay with the all (or most) fx in one box route
to keep noise down. The only stomp boxes I use are a cry baby, dual RAT,
and a line6 delay (the green one, getting ready to replace it with a Yamaha
UD Stomp I recently purchased though (thanks Don for the tip :)). I tried
quite a few rack units and a couple of years ago decided to go with a Lexicon
G2 even though it is out of production. There are quite a few really nice
sounding effects and the unit does not degrade the sound like some of the
cheaper floorboard units do or like having a million stomp boxes does. And,
this is the only unit I have ever used that sounds exactly the same by-passed
as it does with no effects enabled. I've seen easier user interfaces but
I've been really happy with it overall. I play live a lot and the one thing
that this unit does that sold me on it, that no other stomp box or rack unit
I could find would do, is the ability to tap in (via the pedal board) the
tempo for the tremolo effect. They are still pretty pricy, but so far, I
haven't found anything that tops it for versatility, programmability, and
quality for playing live. Hey, Steve Morse uses one too! :) I'll be curious
as to what you wind up getting though.
Got any good suggestions for amps? I currently use a single Fender Hotrod
(40w) but I'm looking to go to an A/B set up. Not really happy with the clean
channel on that Fender but I do like it's distorted channel. Someone here
a while back suggested Carr Amps http://www.carramps.com/. They're really
expensive but I liked the sounds I was hearing from the demo clips on their
web site. Good luck with your search.

Hey there,
I got a Rocktron Prophesy for xmas and I gotta tell ya, this thing
Totally Kicks Butt. I've had a lot of amps and processors go through
here, but this one is a keeper.
It's not all soft and mushy like the Pod or other such devices and it
has the beauty of a tube amp w/o the nastiness of tubes vis-a-vis manuf
inconsistancies, thermal fatigue etc. I've got it going through an
Alesis RA300 power amp (I still can't shake myself of that amp, it's
pretty guitary...wouldn't use it for anything important ; ) into a
Marshall Cab that's loaded with a pair of G-12's and a pair of Vintage
30's. The Rocktron is a tad pricey but highly recomended.
It also has some nice effects and a simple harmonizer (non-scalar)
which, while not the best idea, is still usefull for a couple of things.
It also has eq per channel / pre dist / post dist/ and global, which
give a ton of control over how that dist sounds, and it's a fabulous
dist. The clean is also beautiful to the max but clean seems to be
easier to accomplish in most gear.

Neil,
I'm like M McDermott. I use Line6 PODxtLive and Atomic Reactor 1-12'
(18watt) for most of my playing live. I play the Nevada casino lounge gig
thing. The Reactor will only get so loud until it begins to break up if
using a thick Les Paul sound through a Fender or Vox clean channel. A
single 12' can only go so far. When I need more clean loudness, I use a
second Reactor amp for true stereo and plenty of loud clean full sound. And
it can fill a room pretty good but I still bleed into the PA.
I think it's the combo of the POD and the special tuned Reactor amp with 3
tubes that warm up the digital sound. I also spent a good two weeks
tweaking the POD. Since I play everything from country to rock to disco to
reggae to R&B and some very lite jazz I also purchased the Line6 Variax 700
amber so that I'd have multiple guitars to choose from. The Variax is
adequate to good playability, but I like that I can push a patch on the
PODxtLive and it'll select the guitar and amp combo I want via the digital
cable from Line6 (another $34.00 or so). I've got some cash invested in
this arrangement but I've been told by many that the sounds I've created
come close to authentic, ie, Les Paul's, tele's and strats from vintage
years and acoustics. However, selecting the right POD amp patch and deeply
editing the setting is important to mimic the genre being played. I
primarily use 4 banks of 4 patches each. Bank 17 is my acoustic bank with
no amps. Bank 18 is my Les Paul bank with Marshall, Vox, Line6 Clean and
Tweed amps with varying cabinets types. Bank 19 is my strat bank with a
Sweet Home Alabama amp/gtr patch, a Pink Floyd patch and a SRV patch for
example. Bank 20 is my tele bank with a clean bright country twang and a
Keith Urban patch. Bank 21 is special stuff.
I do like the effects included with the PODxtLive. The wah is almost a cry
baby, the flanges . . . well they flange, the sine chorus is smooth and
silky, the classic distortion is like an old, old round stomp pedal I used
to own, the delays are easy to manage, especially live, where I can tap the
time just as the song kicks off, the reverbs . . . a lot of choices,
phasers, rotary, tremolos and on and on.
I use the USB on the POD for settings tweaking. I use the analog L/R out
using studio mode sent to my mackie and into Paris for recording so I can't
comment on USB recording and any latency isssues.
