I had a Bedini B.A.S.E. for many years. Actually I’m sorry I sold it. I remember
paying a small fortune for it and also needing to supply a list of albums
I used it on to get a somewhat lower price. I still have and use a highly
modified Edison (don’t laugh).

Hi Dimitrios,
I’ve done lots of my own mods over the years, but I picked up this Edison
pre-modified. It has Black Gate Caps, Burr-Brown chips and an updated power
supply.
It sounds very clean compared to a stock unit, but sill not quite as magical
as a Bedini B.A.S.E. It’s not in a very good location in my rack for easy
removal, but next time I have an opportunity, I will pull it and photograph
it for you. I think you will find some DIY info on the web for doing similar
mods.

Gene,

I'm culeless about these boxes though I've seen some plugins that purport to
do this. I didn't think too much of them though. This looks like it could be
a very useful tool if used wisely (as I suppose could be the case with the
plugins too ;o)

I can see how this might be used to process certain busses to get a 3D
positional effect for certain instruments, then freeze (or bounce) these,
apply it to another bus, etc. I'm not sure about full mixes, though from
some of the info I've been reading, it looks like it works nicely on a full
mix as well.

If/when you have the time, would you mind sharing your use methodology using
the BASE?

Thanks,

Deej

You can get most of the same effect using standard M/S techniques, but both
the Behringer Edison and the BASE, seem to be more effective with better
mono compatibility.

I have used the two units primarily for two types of effects.
1. Reduced center on reverb returns: This can help to take the wash out of
the center and still leave relatively long but unobtrusive tails at the L/R
points or “super” L/R – (outside the normal stereo spread - see number 2)

2. To make sections of the song extend outside the normal stereo field. I
generally apply this sound to large vocal chorus sections or occasionally
to the main reverb return but only on the chorus sections. Stereo room mics
on drums or other instruments also can be effective in this mode. Applying
this to binaural mic recording can do some very wild things (a personal favorite)
although mono compatibility can go away in a hurry.

The BASE implanted its own special sound that was reminiscent of a good tube
unit or Class A Neve. Very smooth and delicious.

I did use the BASE across the stereo buss on a few mixes, but I have not
been happy with the Edison in this capacity.

Geno, which BASE version do you have? The one with the
unbalanced, or balanced i/o's?

Also, do you have the users' manual for it?

Thank you Gene. That's some good info. I have used certain spatializer
plugins in the past but didn't really care for what they did. I didn't use
them in the same way you are describing though. Your methodology tips are
appreciated.

It was the original unit – unbalanced.
I think I sold the manual with the box, but I will look through my “Historic
Documents File" ( pile ) in the attic.
I think the suggested retail was around 6K for that unit.

If you still have it, check the credits in the front. :D

Yup, $6k, but sold it to you for $3k if you promised to include
the BASE logo on every release you used it on (like Aphex did
with the original Exciters).
