Showed up this morn for a heavy day of tracking, I notice the Paris box
frozen stiff, hard reset, then box wont even boot, all fan and HD spinning
but no beeps. I reset the AGP and PCI cards and the computer comes back to
life but my displays have all changed resolution and the Matrox 450 will not
let me set them back to 1280 x 1024, tells me to check my device manager
which is fine, no flags anywhere. Meanwhile, the client shows up and starts
to warm up in the booth. I whip out the old Norton boot diskette and re-load
an image from Jan 10th. Back in business, displays are fine and the client
never even noticed. Lesson to be learnt, ghosting is your friend.....!!

Hey Rob --
Would you care to explain to a Ghost newbie (me) what happens next?
What I mean is -- you boot from the Norton disk, then "re-load image"
-- from where? Where (on cdr or other drive?) is this image stored?
Then -- I guess -- Ghost re-builds system from image and that's when
you start smiling, right?
Just haven't been through this yet, and confess I still have some
difficulty understanding the process... Scary... But, obviously,
worth knowing about...

Hi Chas
basically, here is what I do: I make sure I have a sweet running setup with
all configs....etc, then I create a bootable diskette via the Norton Ghost
software(you only need to create this diskette once), if running 98SE or ME,
I find Norton Ghost 2003 excellent, if running XP, then to the best of my
knowledge, you need the latest version of Ghost because of the NTFS file
structure. Then I boot with this diskette and make it to the program GUI of
Ghost were I choose to create an image from partition. One can also create
an image of an entire drive if you choose. Since I have my OS and progs
installed on a partition, I select this partition and create my image
(usually around a 1.5gig file) which I store on one of my data drives.
Now comes the emergency, I boot from the same diskette but instead of
creating an image, I select restore partition from image, that's it, reboot
after this process and your box is restored to a prior working config.

Definitely true to always have good backups, though there are ways other than
Ghost which I think has onerous licensing restrictions.
Also, if it's networked, don't forget to run the security patches and update
the virus definitions when you can. Sometimes that's actually the problem--a
M$oft patch that blew something up--but it's still good to know.
