Well you could probably do about the same thing with a Mac Book Pro and Ardour,
but who the hell would want to? Actually, running Ardour on Mac with OSX
would be a lot easier. Oh there I go again, I said the simple minded word,
easier.
It's like saying it's a lot better to have the ability to hand crank start
you car in five below zero weather than to drive a luxury car. Why have
stupid shit like remote start when you can hand crank start your car?
So your PC is faster than my Mac? While your on the side of the road, under
the hood trying to figure it all out, us Mac guys are flying by you with
our luxury Macs: )
By the way, you can personalize and customize a Mac, some people do, but
what's the sense? The OS can be hacked too. You just have to learn about
it.

Now letsee.........when my wife's computer started acting up last week, I
had another mobo here that I bought for $125.00, I pulled her computer
offline, replaced the motherboard and had it up and running again in about
30 minutes.
$125.00 for mobo
$30.00 for time spent if billing at $60.00 per hour
$155.00 total.
Now I wonder how much time Rick spent on the phone and running back and
forth to god knows wherever and back and he still doesn't have a new
($700.00) mobo and now how far is it to the "genius bar" where the
omnipotent Mac "geniuses" will decide whether he is hosed or not. I'll
guarantee you that he has spent wayyyyyy more than $155.00 in time and
aggravation over this already and if the "geniuses" turn him down for the
new mobo, then he gets to make the decision as to whether it is worth
replacing the mobo on an old Mac or just resigning it to the trash
heap...........well, maybe some of the hardware would work if he could build
another Mac, himself........but he would have to buy a mobo first, now
wouldn't he?.....or maybe he could try getting some extra mileage out of the
old Mac parts if he decided to spend the $700.00 a new Mac mobo would cost
him for a PC mobo/CPU and RAM and case.......but I doubt the old Mac CDR,
PSU and video card would work...........well maybe, but this would defeat
the whole Mac philosophy of "oneness with the company", now wouldn't it?.

Since Macs are so user friendly, sharply designed and a pleasure, here's a
"how to" question (seriously):
How do you turn off the genie/slide effect on dialog boxes/confirmation
windows (e.g. "Are you sure", etc)? Since it isn't my Mac I can't alter
too much, but this one drives me crazy waiting for dialog boxes to slide in
and out of view when doing simple tasks.
I can't find anything in prefs - only the dock's effects can be altered
there (animate opening Apps isn't it - OSX apps seem to have this hardwired
into them).

You could add "EnableBalloonTips" as a keyword to the registry and give it a
hexadecimal value of "0". that would take about 15 seconds........give it a
try.........wait........wrong platform.

Not sure what your talking about. Then again, I'm not sure you know what
your talking about.
How do you turn off dumb dialog boxes in XP? I plug in a USB drive and I
get a window that says that the computer has detected a new device. No shit,
I just plugged in a USB drive! Then when I unplug the drive. I'll get a
message about device is missing. No shit, Sherlock, I unplugged it!
Just to get to a USB drive that I've plug in, I have to click start, my computer,
then I have to figure out which of the generic drives that I have plugged
in, it is. Is it the F drive, G Drive, H Drive??? That's three clicks just
to get to the drive, and now I have to figure out which one it is? That
is a waist of time. On a Mac, the Icon shows up on your desk top, and yes,
you can hide it.

If Macs are so easy to use, you should know the answer James.
When you replace/overwrite a file in most apps on OSX, you get a genie/drop
down
dialog box asking "Are you sure?". It's slow (slower than a straight popup)
and annoying.
The answer? You can't turn it off in preferences anywhere or in app prefs.
In WinXp this is a simple preferences called "visual effects" on/off. No
registry hacking required,
though that is quite easy as well. There is a whole list of properties and
characteristics you can turn
on/off per personal preference.
I actually wasn't trying to bust Mac OSX, but figured that since you say it
is so easy,
you would likely know the answer. I guess it is only easy if you accept
what you are given
and don't see a need to customize anything to fit your workflow (other than
the desktop picture of course). :-)

Deej, your math is funny! First, your not accounting for the first cheap
shit MOBO that started acting up, so add in $125.00 for that. That would
bring you first total up to $280.00. Add $219.00 to that, and you could
have had a new Mac Mini with Intel core duo, and a one year warranty. Not
to mention you could upgrade it with faster processors later and run all
the major OSs right out of the box.
Start adding up all of the bad/fried MOBOs, power supplies, and memory.
Add up your time on video cards that gave you trouble, or were incompatible???
So Deej how much time and aggravation have you spent in the last five years
with all of your PC problems? At your $60.00 an hour, that's got to add
up quick.
As far a rick goes, he has a second hand machine that is out of warranty.
Second, I, a former dealer tried to help. I told him what he needed to
do, to possibly get a new MOBO. It's his time. If rick wants to do things
his way, you can't blame Apple. Even if rick's MOBO had a memory slot that
was out, like the one in my PC, it would still be useable and worth something.
Let's get back to your math; ) You still haven't accounted for the $35,000.00
plus It's going to cost you for the divorce for switching Amy to a PC; )

Well, OSX has dialog boxes too...that is what I was referring to...dialog
boxes.
Not that any of them are dumb.
The ones in windows just pop up instantly. They sllllliiiiiidde open and
sllllliiiiidde back in OSX.
I just wanted to shut that off and have them just pop up to speed things up
a bit since I'm used to a
faster workflow. Guess it can't be done in OSX. Kind of lame to not give
the user the option don't you think?
Oh...did I mention that I'm only posting in this thread for fun, simply
because you are so enamoured with Macs
and take these threads so seriously? ;-)
I really couldn't care less - it was my wife's Mac so I really can't change
anything there anyway
....just curious if it could be done since I couldn't find a pref
anywhere..... :-))

For those of you that don't know about this, when you save an open document,
the dialog box quickly slides down like a window shade instead of just appearing,
and closes the same way. It's just different, not a big deal. Dedric is
just knit picking.
Now the Windows dialog boxes the just pop up, stop work flow and get in the
way on a regular basis in MS Windows are considerable. I hate when Windows
dialog boxes get in the way and tell me something I already know, or ask
me some dumb question. That's irratating! Or I'm told to get up and exercise.
How Stupid! Do you guys really like that shit? And Dedric is complaining
about the way dialog windows open and close. I'm sure there's a way to change
this, but who in the hell would want to??? It's no big deal!!!
Dedric, go on the Mac hack sites to find out how to do this, I'm sure they'd
love you there.

James, I'm sure you are a great guy and like I already said - it really is
no big deal to
me, I just wanted to see how far you would go to prove your point without
actually
proving your point. It was all in good humor. I was never serious. Lighten
up a bit. :-)
Just relax. The sun will still come up tomorrow no matter how many of us use
Macs or PCs.
They are just tools made of plastic, silicon and aluminum, that's all.
Really, I have much better things to do than worry about sliding windows, or
any thing else OS related. :-)
