Well. after being as enthusiastic about both Logic and Apple, I have to say
both
are pooched right now. My G5 with 4 G Ram, and 500 gig HD has been running
slower and slower, (5 minutes to boot) and Logic will not play the simplest
2 track
project without freezing and announcing the dreaded "disc too slow" error.
None
of the other audio progs on the same box have a problem with this.
I've reloaded the system software, stripped out the plugins, cleaned out
the HD
of 40% of the stuff that was there, sent numerous crash reports to Apple
and
reinstalled Logic Studio (never had this problem with Logic 7 either). I've
also
read through the forums and found nothing that works, except possibly
wiping the HD clean and doing a fresh install of everything.
To add icing to the cake, I've waited on Applecare phone support for 45 minutes,
finally connecting with someone live, only to have him cut me off, sending
me back
to the start of the line!!

Sounds like the system drive is failing. I would replace it, reinstall and
go from there - at worst, it wasn't a bad drive and you end up with a spare
500G data drive (I assume you already have a secondary drive for audio).
That might be cheaper than waiting for Apple Care support and getting a
"reinstall Logic" or "rebuild the desktop" answer.
Other Mac guys might have more ideas.

if you're on leopard it would be best to dump it for now. other than
that i agree with dedric on the drive thing. if you're on leopard and
pro 8 i'd dump them and go back to tiger and 7.

I'm still on Tiger. Leopard is just sitting in his box in the corner, waiting
to
strike...
I got through to Applecare, and after an hour, the guy, who made a good effort,
decided to have a Logic expert call me back within 48 hrs. I have the feeling
it's
something up with the Drive. It's a PPC, not an Intel, about 2 years old,
and the
reseller set up two 250 G drives as a striped Raid. He did this for FCP and
that still
works OK (not great like it did, but OK). There is no separate boot drive,
which
goes against standard practice. The other relevant symptom, is that things
are
performing _slightly_ better when first booting up, and the system isn't
too hot.
I read on the Logic Forum last night an Apple guy actually telling one of
the users
to dump his G5 PPC because of "anticipated" cooling system failure. That's
nice.
I'll wait for the Logic expert to call, and then talk to my supplier.

Hi Ted - if it works better when first booted, then gets worse as it heats
up, it's almost definitely hardware (drive being the first likely source).
Hope you get it sorted out without too much expense/hassle.

Actually, today's testing revealed no improvement when first booted. The Apple
guy and I tried to connect 3 times today (you can't call them back), but
I spoke
to my reseller and he agreed that 2 x 250 G drives in a striped RAID wasn't
the
best idea (seemed like a good idea at the time, esp for FCP video work).
So the
likely plan is to keep one of the drives as the Boot, and swap the other
one for
a 750 G Tornado which will become the Media drive. That is, unless the Logic
"Pro" from Apple has a alternative...

Sorry to hear Ted. We have Logic Studio up and running great at the Church
studio(s) on 3 Mac G5's and 1 Mac book Pro. The Mac Book pro even has Leopard
installed.
Another Buddy has Logic *(Studio) on a New Mac Pro ..Blazzing!!

Hey Ted! I would recommend zeroing the system drive. Wipe the drive clean
and re install. Do a fresh install, don't install over the top of an OS
install. If you have to, you can install from the installation disk that
came with the computer then install Tiger over that, but that's it.
Once installed, turn off system update. You might even want to install little
snitch. I have my suspicions about the mother ship. It's funny how sudden
slow machines coincide with major OS releases. If this doesn't work, it's
probably the hardware.
