I'm dropping some bucks on analog stuff to record my band. I'm going to get
a couple of cheaper things (RNP/RNC combos and such) but was thinking of
one of these. It seems to fit nicely for what I want feature wise. Simple
opto dynamics, two bands of shelf EQ, and a pretty good pre. It could be
linked for overheads and room mics or split for individual instruments. And
it even will work as a DI for bass and guitars.
It's coming down to this or a Portico dual pre and dual compressor combo.
That's nearly twice the scratch, which isn't impossible, but if anyone has
thoughts I'd be interested.

I did look at the UA stuff, but most people seemed to like it for it's fuzzy
tubeness. I've found working with the Monkies at the demo stage that it's
pretty easy these days to add fuzz after the fact but impossible to get rid
of it later. The Langevin gear has a rep for being pretty clean despite the
retro styling. Also, it has a linked stereo mode for drum overheads.
Their solid state pre had me looking, though, the 110.
But thanks for the suggestion. It might be an option as an 'in addition to'
thing.

Manley makes great stuff. One other option in the "very clean" dept is

I have a DVC and like it a lot. The comp is pretty sensitive, so a little
works better... We've used it on Vox and string instruments (guitar,
mandolin, even piano). It's not tube and doesn't add colour the way the Summit
MPC 100-A does. Neither does it get phat the way the Summit does. (The distressor
also gives a phatter rounder result). In other words it can give attitude,
but is
fairly precise, and definitely adds that pro vibe to whatever you're tracking.
It also links nicely as stereo unit.

No apology at all, this is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm also not looking
for a lot of color anyway, so this unit is looking like a better and better
idea.
