| OT - I can plug a hdd into my new DVD recorder! WHOOHOO! [message #63614] |

I went shopping recently, looking really for a DVD player to play MP3's with.
My previous one did it, but there was no shuffle mode, and if there's one
thing that MP3 listening wants it's a shuffle mode. They don't call them
IPod Shuffles for nothing.
I really just wanted to pick up a $45 DVD player which would let me shuffle
MP3's, but mid-shop I ran across this cheapy DVD recorder. SURE it was 4
times the budget, but it had a couple of really nifty features. Firstly,
itr would record DVD's (obviously) and my old VHS VCR became a tape destruction
device a good couple of years back and I've never found it in myself to waste
money on another given the technology was obviously moving toward the out
door at considerable pace. Secondly, it has a Firewire/DV port on the front,
so I can plug my digital video camera straight in and convert to DVD without
even having to fire up the PC.
But it was the little USB plug on the front which really got me wondering.
I asked to read the manual but there was no information in there to indicate
what may or may not be an acceptable peice of hardware to plug in. I figured
memory sticks were a sure thing to work, but wasn't so sure on the HDD front.
Some of you may remember a post here a little back asking whether USB HDD's
spoke the same talk as memory sticks.
Well I borrowed a USB external HDD from a guy at work, and WOOHOO! It initially
wouldn't read the NTFS formatted disk, and it doesn't seem to see anything
past the first partition, but it seems so long as you format the drive with
FAT32 it works fine.
So for the price of an external HDD case, and an external HDD, I'll be able
to have many gigs of MP3's constantly on call. If I want to dump more MP3's
on the HDD I simply unplug the HDD from the DVD recorder and plug it into
the laptop... dump the MP3's and plug it back in.
I'm also thinking of getting a USB stick MP3 player. My boss has one he bought
for about $120 which is 1 gig in size and just plugs in like a memory stick.
Then I can take MP3's with me, and if I want to listen on the main stereo
just plug it in...
The digital world really is getting cooler...
