virus protection [message #93773]

Need something good. Symantec????....never again. I'm in the process of
running a recovery app to reclaim my critical data after Norton missed a
boot sector virus that hosed my system drive on my office machine. Thank God
that this application (called Recover My Files) has found the data on the
hosed drive. I've loaded a clean install of Win XP on a brand new 160G drive
and I think I'll be able to recover what I need off the old one, but I've
had it with Norton. It's bloated and uses lots of system resources and now I
don't trust Norton to catch any virii that might be infesting the files I'm
recovering that will be loaded on to the new system. I can't even get Ghost
to recognize the new drive in order to recover a backup drive image I had
which was relatively recent.........and I don't want to use that drive image
anyway because it probably is infested with bugs.

I'm typing this from my other office machine that is protected by PC-cillin
which seems to work OK. I want to protect this new system in a very serious
way. I don't want to have to deal with this crap again. What do you guys
reccommend?

I have said it plenty of times here before and am saying it a last
time;-) Have a look here:

One of my Norwegian mucisian-recording friends, that's also a
dataspecialist, recommended it for me some years ago. When analyzing
Norton and it's problem, he threw Norton out at once and ended up with
Avast.

I'm a fan of the Grisoft stuff. There's another free mob about too who are
supposed to be good.

Nothing is perfect in Virusland of course, but Grisoft is free (for some
uses), it's not bloated, it's stable, and while early on it used to miss
things, I don't think I've seen it miss a virus for a couple of years, not
that I get a lot of viruses near my system, but it's been good.

On a DAW I usually consider it more important to ensure system stability
than protect against viruses. Virus protection on a DAW is best done by quarantine.
Just make sure that it's not on the net and that any media you put on it
has the extension "WAV" and you'll be right. ;o)

But you have nothing to lose by loading Grisoft AVG and trying it out, as
it is free after all.

1. Turn on the XP firewall. Not great but gets the job done.
2. For downloads of software updates and such use firefox. Update it as requested.
3. If you need to surf/email from your audio machine do it in a VM. IMHO
I'd suggest Debian Etch or the current Ubuntu, but that's just because I
know the package manager well. If SuSE is your trip then good on you.
4. Don't install any specific anti-virus software, because you won't need
it.

I love this anti virus app and Acronis. My computer is up and running and
it's very fast compared to what was happening with Norton. I wasn't aware of
how big a hit I was taking until I got rid of that crap. I love the way it
filters and the ease with which you can designate what is spam and what
isn't.

HI Steve,
Haven't used the Lenovo stuff so haven't seen the backup/restore
software they use. It is more than likely a a OEM branded for Lenovo
version of one of the main backup programs. Hopefully not Norton.. :)
I remember when Dell and Gateway wee installing Nortons Go Back on
machines. Ouch.
