Yeah, I see "Essentials" for $99 at audiomidi.com right now. Might be
enough for my needs, but I'd rather dig up a legitimate copy of 4.0
on somebody's dusty shelf somewhere... Might be e-bay time...

I'm sure v.5 is great stuff -- but it's not cheap, and it brings a
whole lot of surround and video feautres into Wavelab that I'll never
use... I'd stay with 3.1 for mastering and cd output, but I need to
move that work onto a newer XP setup -- which isn't supported in
v.3... I'm sure you'll like working with Wavelab -- in any version...

Thanks guys for the info. Glad to hear 5 ok. Ver 4 is still for sale at
8th st music, but not cheap @490, ebay has academic version of 5 at 389

How are you doing?
Sense the upgrade from Wavelab 3 to 5 is only 299.00 direct from
Steinberg that would be the best way to go. You would probably be paying
close to that from somebody used. You will also at least be able to
register it and get support.
Any other programs that offer some sort of cross grade will end up cost
that much or more. The only one that is comparable in features, sound,
usability would be Samplitude.

time to time... Moved the Cubase side of my operation to SX3 on a
separate box a while ago, but staying with Paris for its tape-ness
and for its console-ness... (How's that for a hi-tech overview?)
As for Wavelab -- I just don't want all that surround and video stuff
cluttering up my life -- and I don't want to pay for stuff I probably
won't use... I found v.4 in a box (at B&H) for $167 -- as a
"competitive upgrade"... Might go that way -- but I'm wondering how
Steinberg may be handling the qualifying/verifying aspect of that sort
of deal as it concerns what is essentially an obsolete product...

longer in the business of un-locking v.4 in a transaction of this
type... Your thoughts?
And -- while I have your undivided attention -- I'm thinking about
getting a laptop setup with a lean and mean interface (the RME

24bitsx48k, then drag everything into Wavelab for batch conversion to
PAF's, then open in Paris, do the mojo, rinse and repeat... Question
for you, my good man, is: what's the cool laptop for this? Wanting to

I would call them. They haven;t made the competitive upgrade in awhile.
So I'm not sure how they would handle it.

This system will work great for that.

I can work a nice price if you are getting the Fireface at the same
time. We are RME's #3 independent dealer in the US.
You can use an external USB2 drive for transferring the files to Paris
or use the on board network.
If you want to use firewire to transfer files then use a Lacie firewire
card bus for either the drives or the Fireface 800.
The Fireface works and sounds excellent.
It by the way can be configured to work stand alone so you can use as an
AD/DA for Paris if you want too.

In the US Steinberg no longer sells the competitive upgrade. It seemed
to coincide with the Yamaha thing. Maybe they will again soon sens there
are many times I could sold it recently. I'm sure there are dealers that
probably still have stock of them.
Wavelab 5 does not use a dongle either.

As I understand it, WL5 DOES require a dongle... at least our copy does...
