Here's the formula for achieving success with 3 x RME HDSP PCI cards
(drivers are v2.94(3), 4 x UAD-1 cards (v4.2), an ASUS A8V Deluxe mobo, 4G
RAM,.AMD XP4200 dual core CPU, a Matrox P750 graphics card and a 13 slot
Magma chassis.

First of all, use the 1014 BIOs for the mobo. This gets rid of the USB over
current *feature* that rears it's ugly head with the 1017 bios.

Install all Win XP updates except the .NET 2.0 framework (use the 1.1
framework)

Update the Matrox P750 driver and bios, then use the Matrox sysutil 1805 to
*downgrade* the Matrox BIOS so the Splash screen and mobo BIOS can be viewed
properly without upgrading to the ASUS 1017 BIOS from hell.

Install the 2 x RME HDSP 9652's in PCI slots 2 & 3.

Install the Magma host card in PCI slot #4

In the Magma chassis, the slot assignments are as follows:
1.-UAD-1
2.
3. RME Multiface PCI
4.
5. UAD-1
6.
7.
8. UAD-1
9.
10.
11.
12. UAD-1
13.

I'm playing back a 31 track project with a 98% UAD-1 resource load with the
buffers set to 512k (6ms). No crackling in the audio.........at all......and
no dropouts or glitching. System isn't even breathing hard.

This is with my system marginally optomized for audio. None of the
recommended registry tweaks have been done and none of the system service
tweaks have been done either.

the way to get this to happen.

Good to hear but you havn't tested 1018 bios yet, maybe you can fly too with

Not long at all. I had a couple of crashes last night so I've still got some
tweaking to do with the registry and system services. Thing is, the tweaks
that worked with SP1 don't really work with SP2 and Cubase won't initialize.
I've already got a fully screwed up system image Ghosted that I need to
reverse engineer.

Pull the PCI card for the Multiface & check to see what version
it is... it's printed in the upper right-hand portion of the
circuit board (as you're holding the components facing you, with
the port on the left-hand side); if it's anything lower than
v1.7, that might be your problem. If it is, lower than 1.7, you
can get a factory refurb, tested & ready to rock, for $40 from
Synthax.

I was running a version 1.4 card forever without any problems,
and then with my new mobo & WinXP SP2 it didn't want to play
nice anymore... a version 1.7 card took care of it.

Let me know if that's the case, and I can hook you up with the
right people at Synthax to get yours swapped ut.

So this must be a problem with SP2???.........I guess it must be because it
worked fine with SP1.

Woah...........sorry.......brain isn't in gear yet...........not enough
coffee.......I'm running SX on SP2 with this card right now, but it's a
basically *stock* version that I Ghosted prior to doing the system
optimization tweaks which involved many *regedits* and disabling certain of
the system services. All three cards ran fine on SP1 with these same tweaks
done. SP2 has added a few new things to the system services. I didn't know
which of these I needed to turn off so I left them alone.........so I
repeat, I'm running the Multiface PCI on an unoptomized version of SP2 right
now. Would the version of the PCI card make a difference due to optimization
tweaks?

Here's the info on this, directly from the RME site:

The Hammerfall DSP system with PCI card does not work correctly
on a few computers. Unsuccessful boot initialization shows the
following symptoms:
The PCI card is not found by the system during boot-up. It does
not appear as Multimedia Device in the list of PCI devices, nor
in Windows' device manager.
The hammer symbol does not show up in the Systray of Windows
2000/XP. The Settings dialog is not being loaded, because the
card (the HDSP system) is not present. The mixer symbol
(TotalMix) shows up in any case.
The Settings dialog remains empty (Mac OS) or shows 'Error'
(Windows 98).
The system does not work (ASIO error etc.).

In all cases it is the same error. Directly after switching on
the computer the power supply ramps up its output voltages. But
already during the ramp up several components begin to draw high
currents and cause voltage fluctuations. This can cause the FPGA
on the HDSP-PCI card to hang. As a consequence, the card is
virtually dead and cannot be detected by the computer nor
initialized.

the mod, if you want to do it yourtself, but I wouldn't
recommend it vs. $40 & a swap of your card for a factory refurb
WITH a warranty.

That makes sense from what I'm experiencing. 1014 is working fine here. I've
read on some forums that it is possible top go up to 1015b, but I'm going to
stay where I am unless I start having significant problems. or some kind. I
really appreciate your help with this Dave.
Last night I pushed the system to the absolute max and once I exceeded 100%,
some major distortion started happening. After I backed it down to around
90%, the distortion continued. I backed it down again to about 70% and the
distortion *still* continued. I had saved this project under a different
name because I knew I would be experimenting with it so I finally had to
abandon it and go back to the original project. I ramped up the plugin count
again to around 92% without any problems and it ran like that flawlessly,
looped for a couple of hours. Eventually the system froze up, but there
could be other reasons for this since all my system services are active
right now with 3463537548576 little applets running in the BG. The moral to
this story is that on a 4 card system, it might be advisable to keep the
UAD-1 CPU resources to around 90% max to to avoid the possibility of
corrupting a project. This would be something like 30 LA-2A's or a huge
number of any other combination of UAD-1 processors. I figure if I need this
many processors, I'm probably doing something wrong anyway. It's really the
principle of the thing with me..........and by gawd........if I have 4 x
UAD-1 cards, I should be able to use 'em all and achieve wretched excess
when/if I want to.........right?

Hey Neil,

Thanks for the heads up on this. It doesn't look like I'm in the danger zone
on my computer hardware, but I'm going to check my PCI card version later
today. Better to be safe. If it's good, I guess I'll just tweak this puppy
one change at a time and then try to reboot SX after each tweak until I find
the culprit tweak(s) that are slarking my Steiny dongle.. Shouldn't take
more than three days

30 - LA-2A's... yep, that definitely qualifies as wretched excess! ;-)

I think any of the bios versions from 1013 (the first bios for dual
core operation) and 1015 would be safe... the only differences appear
to be updates to accommodate new CPU's.

Is it just the dongle that's not initializing? Maybe I
misunderstood - I thought you meant you were getting card errors
(i.e.: when you open SX, you don't have the Multiface available
for i/o & there's no playback heard).

If it's just the USB key not being recognized, and you're
getting the error window when you try to open SX, try
pulling it out & reinserting they key until you see the little
red light inside flash a couple of times instead of staying
steady-red... you may have to do this a time or three. Every now
& then I still have to do this, and I plan to load a USB PCI
card that I have, but I'm laothe to change anything until I'm
done with this current sesson I'm working on. Just pull it out &
reinsert it a few times until the led flashes, then
click "Retry" on the error window & see if that works for you.

I have no idea why it sometimes boots up & recognizes the key
right off the bat, and sometimes I have to do this... it makes
no difference if anything else is plugged into a USB port of
not, it's totally random. Anyway, try that & lemme know if it
works.
