TC, you're welcome, and this really is a fantastic thing. This is the
intersection of a number of significant developments unforseen at the
time of PARIS' discontinuation, and some of the things underlying the
choices here represent completely new options.
1) The Intel Mac runs PARIS happily under XP. Mac users have expanded
upgrade options now. They may not be options with OS9 - but they're
options that let you run PARIS on a Mac (rebooting to work on tracks in
OSX), and that's something. This may not be totally "news", but I'm
glad to see it confirmed.
2) So far the pretty-much-brand-new VirtuaVia box seems to be a
confirmed "go" - it's working so far with a two-card rig. This is, to
say the least, extremely exciting considering its price point and the
dwindling number of mobos with large amounts of PCI slots.
3) Mike's ADAT.dll and PCSL work will be the reason TC will be able
pull this off on XP (can you actually install earlier versions of
Windows on an Intel Mac? I don't know). Without Mike having defeated
the various issues surrounding PARIS on XP, Torry wouldn't be, for
example, heading for six ADAT cards in three MECs.
There are two take-aways from this: the first is self-evident - there
have been exciting developments to date.
The second is more subtle - a feeling of a bit more *confidence* that
allows one to take a couple more risks, knowing Mike's on the case.
It may be premature for a "victory lap". But if this all works when the
additional components arrive - freakin' awesome. Congrats.

Thanks Kerry, I'm just fortunate that you guys have been moving forward
with all this in the last year. I didn't even think about the dual core
aspect initially, but I'm glad Mike has been doing so much work on that
and the multi adat card functionality to get all that running..
It's pretty exciting being able to move forward with Paris, I'll let
everyone know how it goes once the full rig is built, which will
probably be 4 cards, 4 mecs and 6 adat cards with additional 8i/o for 2
buss external hardware. I'll be lightpiping 48 tracks of adat from 2
digi 192 i/o cards, either recording over to paris from Logic (or PT8)
or mixing in Paris in "live" mode, I'm not sure yet.. I still have to
figure out the best workflow for that.

wow-
this is fairly significant, however, as one considering going
to XP myself, wouldn't it just be easier/cheaper to build a
dedicated windows XP box for Paris?
what are the advantages of doing it this Intel Mac way, other than fulfilling
ones desire to work with Macs? in fact a
dedicated win XP box would save rebooting for any treatment of
audio in Logic etc...

Wow! It looks like the VirtuaVia box runs about $226 USD. Now, if we can
just get the price of the Mac Pro down to a coupla-few hundred bucks I'd
be in business!

Hi Ted,
There's no advantage, except the fact that I was already running two Mac
Pro's, one for Logic/Pro Tools, and the other for additional virtual
instruments.
If I didn't have the 2nd one to spare, I would have just got a PC box.
So in my case it was cheaper to use what I had.

The only other thing to keep in mind is the shipping cost from France (I
don't think it's available in the US), as well as the need for an ATX
case and power supply.
I put mine in a nice rackmount atx case, and put in this additional big
fan with a 3 way speed control switch. The atx case has 2 doors that
open out from the front. The little fan control switch is inside the
door, so I can turn the speed up or down. I also got a 600w power supply
to put in the case.

Well, I may have jumped the gun a bit. I've run into a few problems on

I'm really thinking of getting a new Mac Pro for running..Logic Pro via Mac
OS, Nuendo..Via boot camp, Pro Tools, and of course Paris..
This has been my dream setup for work.. I think it's finally coming true..

Hi lamont,
I jumped the gun a bit in my initial excitement..
Kerry is helping me with some of the files from Mike Audet.. there were
a couple of major steps I neglected during setup (like the dual core
configuration and some other things), and as a result my mec i/o cards
are not showing up properly.
I'm going to try and get back at it later today and I'll keep everyone
posted as to how I make out. I'm pretty confident we will get this running.

It's very easy...I've built 2 boxes now, one a quad core with 4gb ram and
the other a dual core with 2gb ram.
The quad core, (studio), is even running a legit copy of OSX 10.5.4 ..I
haven't done the upgrade yet, not till I finish my current project, but I'm
assured that the auto updates from apple don't break the install.
It was setup using a boot disk (Boot-Kable-Bumby.iso) and then swapping to
the retail OSX disk for the install and back to the boot disk to finish the
install.

Different situation.
They are marketing a computer that runs Mac OSX, the hackintosh crowd are
just allowing OSX to run on Intel machines, and suggesting the purchase of a
retail disk.
From what I can gather, there is even cross consultation going on.

I've got a mobo from the approved list,so it should be pretty
smooth sailing(i hope) I've already purchased the mobo cpu and
ram so I'm committed. This will be my first build. Wish me luck!

Makes it a great value Mac, doesn't it?
The only gotcha may be the 8gb ram...don't know if its been tried..at least
I'm not aware of it...
Also , I assume your dvd and HD are sata...and don't forget to make sre HCPI
is set in the bios, but just read the duide and you should be ok.

That's pretty damn cool.
I've got to get a system together for my drummer so he use Logic LE and
Pro Tools. Maybe this is the way to go since his budget is limited..
