I recently snagged an SSL duende PCIe card. I've never used an SSL console.
I hear a lot of talk on various forums and publications about the "magic
buss compressor". I couldn't tell you whether the Duende version of the buss
compressor sounds anything at all like one of their hardware comps but I've
been playing around with this on some sub busses and on the main mix buss
(something I'm always really careful about) on a rock mix project I'm getting
ready to dig into this weekend. As I play around with the settings, when
inserted after a Portico 5042 (the tape emulator box) I start getting something
that I'm liking quite a bit, at least right now. I'm going to walk away from
it for the evening and approach it with some fresh ears in the morning, but
I think I really may end up liking this piece of kit. There's a nice quality
and sense of headroom to the processing. I may get me a little closer to
wher eI would like to be. It can be very transparent and big. Those here
who are using native rigs might want to give it a spin. Different vibe from
the UAD, but in a good way.

Yeah I've heard the box unit, (not used it) and like it a lot.

2 Qs:
Have you tried the Portico 5043 for buss compression?
Have you tried putting the Duende _before_ the 5042?

(What reasons do you think there are for the order of tape/comp?)

Yes. I actually bought one and I compared it to the UAD 33609. they were
so close that I retruned the 5043.

I haven' tried that yet but I will. the reason for putting it before the
bus comp is that the 5042 is a line amp/gain stage and can drive the summed
signal into the comp to trigger more or less compression.

I'll be playing around with it some more this weekend and I'll report any
miraculousness that I might find.

Hey DJ, we have a SSL 4000 G(E series Eqs) and the wave SSL plugs nails the
comps and eq's. AND, from what I hear, the Duende plugs are better!! :)

Using Nuendo, inserting the SSL buss comp does the same thing as the real
board does.. The trick is to push the .:

-Make up (knob) 10
-Release auto (Auto)
-Threshold (1'oclock)
-Attack (1 or 3 )
-Ratio (4)

All in all, PUSH THE MAKE UP!!! AND PULL THE THRESHOLD.. Man, you can feel
you mix tighten up :)..

That's exactly what I have been doing today. 4:1 is you friend as well. I've
got three songs in the can right now that I've been a bit less than happy
with. It's a genre that I'm not used to woking with that much (sort of punkabilly
stuff) and it's coming together like a big dawg!!!

This buss comp really can achieve the BIG thing without making the mix sound
like the life has been squeezed out of it.
