Anybody out there know where the best deal is on a Grace m101? I wouldn't
normally be pinching pennies, but I've got a wedding coming up in August,
so any gear is a stretch.

Heya Mike - are you thinking of buying any more pres in the next year
or so or will this be a one-off?

If you'll be getting more channels, you might find the Seventh Circle
stuff to your liking. One C84 module (reportedtly closest to the Grace
vibe) plus the eight channel chassis runs under nine hundred bucks US
assembled ($469 if you're handy enough to build it yourself).

After that, populating the remaining seven slots with preamp modules
starts at DIY kits for $79. The priciest is $329 for the Neve channel,
$499 assembled - try finding a channel of really-brilliantly-executed
Neve for that price! The sound of the N72 is reputed to be spot-on
Neve, the C84 seems to be the kind of ultra-clean pre the Grace is
reputed to be. Killer reviews on these so far; it's the way I'm going
to be jumping in the new year.

Hi Kerry,

I checked out the severth circle stuff, and I would feel comfortable building
it. I think that may be the next place I will go after the grace. I've
never owned a really, really nice mic pre, and I feel I need something to
use as a benchmark to develop my listening skills.

I look forward to hearing your report on the seventh circle modlues. I could
see them being on the list for next year sometime.

Try Mark or Micky at Wind Over the Earth in Boulder, CO. Grace Designs is
just down the street from them, and they have great prices and customer service--I
have been buying from them for many, many years...

Hey Rich - I haven't tried them yet, I'm just going on word of mouth -
albeit some from folks whose ears I trust. The user buzz is incredible,
and I literally have not found a single word of negativity - or even
"damned with faint praise" -- amongst the pros. The rumour is that
they've got the Neve implementation really right.

The driving factor for me is the bang-for-the-buck. Back in the day
when I was running a little studio we used to use Shawn Pierce's modded
Neve broadcast "bassinet" to front end PARIS recordings and i got used
to that Neve magic, and miss it (although I'll be trying some of the
other SCA offerings like the C84 "Millennia" clone).

The bassinet came with a lot of problems (there were always one or two
flaky channels that needed lovin' up). I probably could have bought it
for a few grand and refurbed it, but for a small project facility it's
a real challenge to make a purchase like that cost-effective. So I'm
really looking forward to having similar sonics but with far greater
reliability at a price point I can justify, in a day of scaled-back
productions and a producer's facility I have no intention of letting
mushroom into A) a full studio with attendant overhead and B) a busy
facility that has large amounts of folks tramping in and out of our
family bathroom :D

I've got 8 channels of the SCA A12 pres (API 312 clones) and I can say they
are nothing short of amazing for the money. I've owned (and still do) both
vintage api 312 and new ones (API 3124). Honestly, I can vouch for these
as being great sounding pres, with very similar qualities to APIs. In some
cases, I've picked them over my vintage API 312. Good luck in your search.

Hi Luiz; thanks very much for the first-hand perspective. That's
precisely what I'm hearing from everyone who's A/B'd them with the
originals in real work situations.
