Hi Rob. Watch this thread, I'll post a link to the tutorial files as soon as
I have a chance to load them to the server. I'm in the middle of some forum
business but I'll get to it as soon as I finish.

I've been using Paris for 8 years now and,while I have run the "tutorial",
I don't think I learned anything from it.

My advice: SKIP FREEFORM MODE for right now until you get to know PARIS a
bit better. Freeform is powerful and cool, but it can be a headscratcher.
PARIS in normal mode is pretty straightahead.

Oh - the other thing I would skip for right now, unless you *absolutely have
to deal with it*, is the patch bay. It's weird, but PARIS users who have
been wizards at the platform for years have struggled making logical sense
of it. I have no idea why, it always seemed pretty straightforward to me,
but I can tell you what stumps most people - it's disastrously
non-intuitively LABELED for beginners.
For example you'll be plugging things into inputs when they're really
"outputs". The trick is to try a few sample layouts and figure out the
logic, and re-write the names of things on a separate sheet for reference so
they make more sense.
I know a guy with a headphone setup that he's never bothered implementing
because he's terrified to touch the patchbay lest he break it and be unable
to fix it :)

Sounds good...I started looking at the patch bay pages and closed them:) Something
I can't understand is why my #2 input will sometimes play through #1 and
# 2 output. For instance I have a guitar going to #1 input and a guitar amp
out of the #1 output. Then I have a bass going to #2 input and a bass amp
on #2 output. Then when I play the bass it comes out of both amps. Why not
just the bass amp? I figured out how to play track one and record track 2
tonight. That was a major breakthrough for me. I'm starting to think this
may be too much for a beginner like me. I really appreciate the help.

send that was causing same thing even with panning set L and R. I'll get
this someday...

Rob - If you could detail how your current setup is configured and what you're
trying to do it might be easier to help. Are you driving a guitar amp with
an output from Paris?

First of all, thanks for this help. I really appreciate this time that people
are offering to help a beginner like myself.
I have been using the 1-3 inputs on the 442 for bass,guitar,vocals. The vocals
are from a mic routed through a Trace Acoustic pre-amp. Then I run a jack
from output 1 to a 400w Fender bass amp.Another from output 2 to channel
one on a Peavey KB/A60 acoustic guitar/keyboard amp with 2 channels. Another
from output 3 to channel two on the same amp. Sometimes I put effects pedals
in between the instruments and the 442. I don't have any monitor speakers.
I have a Samson servo 260 Studio Amplifier 130 watt stereo, but bought it
used and haven't been able to get any sound to come out of it. It may be
the way I am hooking it up. Then I have two old JBL model L110 speakers also
not in use.

I never got into freeform, as I found it was too easy to get myself in
trouble after trying it out a few times.
From what I can remember though, it was really the early predecessor to
Logic 8's take comping feature.

Hi Rob,
I'm sort of skimming this thread, but when you say "from output 2,
output 3" etc. are you referring to the 442 or your preamp?
If you mean that you are running outputs from the 442 directly to a bass
amp etc, then that is not correct for a couple of reasons (impedance,
levels etc).
442 ouputs can be used for monitoring, routing inserts with outboard
gear, or external aux effects, not for instrument levels (well, the
keyboard amps would work). Or do you mean you are using the amps for
monitoring?
Sorry if I'm confused and reading this completely wrong, I'm just in the
middle of several things at the moment so I just read this quickly while
checking the group..
Can you get your hands on a headphone amp? That would give you some
proper monitoring to start out with.

It's been so long since I looked at the back of my 442 that I'm not sure what's
there, but here's what I think: You need to get your patch bay set up right.
I think you want the 442's outputs 1 and 2 to connect to the inputs of your
power amp. Go into the patch bay and click & drag from the left master section
output to the 442's #1 input. Drag the right master output to the #2 input.
Be aware that these 442 "inputs" will route the master output to the 442's
outputs 1 and 2. You should then hear sound from the speakers connected
to your power amp (assuming, of course, that the amp and speakers are working!).
That'll become your studio monitor for tracking and mixing. If you get
the wrong outputs on the master section you won't hear tracks that are soloed
and the volume control on the mixer's master section won't work. I'd say
that's step one toward getting set up properly. Try that and update us...

Damn! I just looked at the pdf of the Paris manual and there is no "How To"
for connecting the hardware! How did any of us ever figure it out?!?

Ok, I figured that out and actually get a small amount of noise out of my
amp for the first time. The only problem is that it's a small amount of noise.
With the volune cranked up on the amp I get very little music out of each
speaker. It's definitely the two tracks I am looking for though. I need to
test the amp with something else. The fuse is ok.

You need to make sure your 442 outputs are set to +4 dB line level to get
the most out of your amp. I can't remember what the 442 looks like when you
open it in the patch bay but you should see a set of buttons to choose between
-10dB and +4dB for your inputs and outputs. All my gear runs at +4dB, which
is generally accepted to be the "pro" standard. -10dB is for consumer equipment.
That'll boost the output of your monitor system by 14dB right off the bat
which is a significant increase in level. Check to be sure your master faders
are all the way up. Then you need to get your levels into Paris up to a
good level to maximize your signal to noise. Get the clip lights on the
442 to flash red from time to time and then back your level (from whatever
device you're using - mic pre, bass amp, etc.) off a little. Occasional
red flashes are usually OK but you need to use the seat of your pants to
learn what the system likes and doesn't like. The good news is that Paris
is more forgiving than most!

Freeform pretty much rocks once you get the hang of it. There are, however,
some strange quirks! I'm dying to get my hands on a Logic system for a day.
I have so many questions that can only be answered hands-on...

I had a project a while back that reall needed free form so I spent a day
figuring out the best way to stay on top of it.
Without a doubt it saved my ass but I certainly wouldn't use it blind (so to
speak)

The way logic handles comping is top notch, although I've found it to be
buggy if doing heavy comps (corrupted sessions). PT8 comping is close in
it's implementation, but not anywhere near as quick as working in Logic
(no soloing/muting involved).

Great! Now I am editing with a speaker for track 1 and track 2. The volume
still seems low with the amp cranked but I'm thinking that's because of the
original recording level. Is there a way to increase the volume on an existing
track file so it will be louder through the studio amp and speakers? Now,
with the mixer levels maxed out and the studio amp maxed out, the volume
is still low.
Now, how do I play through my amps and hook-up to the 442 for recording?
Before, I was going through input 1 with instrument and then out through
output 1 to my amp. If I want to hear the existing 2 tracks and record a
track 3 at the correct level how should I hook-up and set patch bay?
Ok,now some editing questions. I made a drum track that was 4 minutes long
and has two different tempos. How do I cut out a section and move it to a
new project? I tried ctrl+x to cut and then paste in a new project but that
didn't work.
When editing a project with two tracks, I have a 30 second pause in the song.
How do I remove that pause from both tracks and have what's remaining move
over and not leave a gap? I have'nt figured out how to cut two tracks at
the same time either. All I can do is highlight one track and set two cut
marks and then cut out the section I want with ctrl+x. Then I have a gap
in one track and have to try to cut the second track exactly the same, then
slide what's left over to fill the gaps. What I'd like to do is cut the section
from both tracks at the same time and have what's left snap over to fill
the gap.
Handling existing files has been hard too. I had 5 projects saved and wanted
to remove 3 of them. I can't find a place in PARIS to delete projects. When
I go to documents in windows the projects are expanded into alot of files
that don't have the project heading. So I don't know which ones to delete.
I'm sure I'm missing something here. I'm thinking I should make a folder
each time I finish working on a project to keep them seperate. Now I have
5 projects all broken up in the same list and have already deleted some files
by mistake that I wanted to keep. When I tried to open a project that I thought
I had kept...it said some of the files can't be found. So, is the folder
idea the way to go to manage files?

you can boost the volume of the track by highlighting the track(s) you want
to boost - in one of the drop down menus in the editor window (sorry
don't remember which one) you click on gain change and just type in the gain
change for the track or group of tracks

play directly into the amp and mic it?
I can't answer the patch bay question without accessing Paris - which won't
be happening anytime soon (we're at the tail end of renovations and Paris is
packed away)

Put the now line at the point you want to cut...highlight all the drum
tracks...hit Control K - all the tracks are cut...delete the first section
of tracks, move the second section to ths begining of the song "0:00.000"
and save it as a new song name. Hit undo until your back to the place where
you cut the tracks...delete the second half of the drum tracks and save it
as the original file name...voila two songs

see above....after cutiing - grab all the tracks at the end and move
them...OR after cutting use the "snap to end" (drop down menu - snap on)
then click the relevent button on the top in the editor window. (I think)
There's also a remove time option but I haven't used it in so long I can't
remember where it is in Paris

yes, set up a distinct folder for each song

I like that idea but unfortunately my PARIS computer is a long way from my
office computer that has internet hooked up. I wanted to keep my old comp
that has PARIS away from the internet. PARIS only. I am starting to think
I need to get another wireless router though and get online. It would simplify
alot of stuff.

I wouldn't do the gain change thing that Don suggested because it's destructive
editing. I'd probably go into the graphic EQ window and crank the gain first.
You have up to 20 dB, which should help a lot. If that's not enough you
could try gain change but I'd render the track first to make a copy so as
to not damage your original file.

Drag the outputs of the 442 in the patchbay to the inputs of your mixer.
You now have 4 channels ready to record. Put a mic in front of your guitar
or bass amp, plug it into a mic pre, plug the output of the mic pre into
the input (1,2,3 or 4) of your 442 and enable the track(s) you're recording
to. If you want to record guitar or bass direct you need a direct box plugged
into a mic pre or a preamp w/ a line level out. Plugging a guitar or bass
directly into the 442 will create an impedance mismatch - most guitars and
basses high impedance outputs. The 442 has low impedance inputs. If you
dig the sound, fine. Rules are made to be broken. But generally speaking,
you'll get better signal-to-noise and better freq response w/ matched impedances.
There are cheap direct boxes and expensive ones. You need to shop around.

When i want to export a track or group of tracks I usually render them, make
note of the new names, and then import them into the new song. Don's idea
would work fine too. I just find that for file management my way keeps things
more organized. I also keep every song in it's own folder.

You can select multiple tracks. Then, on my Mac (the keystrokes are different
for PC, I guess) I do "Command" + "K". That cuts all selected tracks at
the now line.

I always create a new folder for a song before beginning work on it. Then
I set my record path to put all files in that folder. Name your rec path
with something short (Paris don't like long names!) that'll tell you which
files belong to which song. Save often and frequently. Also, save a lot.
You'll NEVER be sorry you saved too often.

Yikes! Thanks for the feedback, folks; perhaps that file manager doesn't
like files that size.
I've tried something more direct and it seems to be working on this end -
give the same page a try and see if it works better now.

When Micha tried it, it was using the WikkaWiki {{files}} widget, which is
in php I believe. Php, it would seem, has some "issues" with large files
(something to do with the way it uses memory). Oh well, the direct links I
replaced it with seem to work fine.
