Is it possible to send audio from one computer's ADAT out (e.g. Ableton Live with RME fireface) to the ADAT in on my MEC and then record/mix those tracks in PARIS?

I'm starting to get the feeling that I bought an ADAT card in vain, and that it only supports working with actual ADATs Sad

Hope I'm wrong....?

Hi Amuse, yes it is possible, I do it all the time tracking into Paris. I send 8 tracks out of box#1 via CubaseSX/Pulsar adat out into box#2 running Paris/MEC/Adat. Playback in Cubase is controlled by Paris via midi clock using midioverLan (not the best, but it works OK for printing VSTIs). Configure the audio routing in both boxs patchbays, set Pulsar clock to slave and everything works fine.

Good Luck
Rob

Hi Rob, does it only work in a master/slave configuration or is there a way to just patch the signals in and monitor them regardless of playback or recording status?

Yes, I can playback in Cubase and monitor via Paris with tracks record enabled.

Use the Brian Tankersley routing trick, which permits you to leave your ADAT tracks in an "always audible" mode, completely independent of your record or monitor status. You can leave them running sync'd, "print" them to the track whenever you like by putting the track into record enable, or mute them by muting the "External" input.

Quote:
Brian's great tip can minimize one use of a patchbay by eliminating one annoyance involved in patching equipment to PARIS inputs - "monitoring patched equipment without needing to be in 'record enable'"

Live Monitor and Record at the Same Time:

- Set all the *TOP* EDS inserts on your Paris ppj template to
External. Then put all of the individual External inserts in Bypass. You
should save the ppj that way. This assumes you don't use 4 EDS inserts
at once.

- Whatever your Input source is to a given channel of the Paris
Mixer, in the Patchbay, patch it to both the Mixer and also to the
Insert Return (top row) of the Insert Block. So any Input patch goes to
the both the Mixer in and the Insert return of the same channel. i.e.,
MEC Input 1 goes to Mixer Input 1 *and* Insert 1 Return (top row).

- You (unfortunately) must complete the Insert loop by connecting
each Insert Send (bottom row) to another point. If you don't use
external FX returns, you could just patch all 16 Insert Sends to the FX
Returns (top row). Or use some of the MEC Master patch points. Or some
other combo that works for you.

- Save this as your default ppj [and/or as a Patchbay setup] and you're
good.

When you want Live input without Record Enable, just pop on the
External EDS insert on any channel. You'll get the input, complete with
any other EDS inserts, EQ, FX sends....the whole enchilada just like you
were in Record Ready and Always Monitor Input. If you want to hear
what's already been recorded on that channel as is normal for Paris,
just bypass the External EDS insert.

Regards,
Brian T

Thanks, I've done this but I'm just not getting any signal. Should "Optical Lock" light on the ADAT card's MEC front panel be lit?

I don't have the "Sync" light lit but the "Active" and "Optical Lock" lights are both lit. For optical Lock to be lit, I believe you have to be connected bi-directionally, ie both Fireface ADAT out to PARIS ADAT In and vice versa.

Check your ADAT cables are good (cheap at any decent-sized computer place nowadays), make sure "ins" are patched to "outs", make certain both machines are set to the same sample rate (try 48k on both for simplicity), and double check that both machines know which is supposed to be the "master" and which the "slave".

Cool, I got it all working... was missing a minor step of telling the RME Fireface UC's optical audio setting to ADAT.
