Mastering with TC electronics Finalizer Express [message #106100]

I've been wondering if something of this nature (TC Finalizer Express) would really be worth it @ about $1000 bucks.

If I follow BT's advise I can get my mixes hot enough but they seem to not have the presence, punch, tightness, clarity and brilliance that I'd like to hear. Although good, just not enough wow factor.

Should I continue in the mix or should I consider some kind of outboard mastering box such as stated above?

Well, most folks would say that treating the final stereo mix as a whole with separate processing is the key to getting the end result you're looking for. Whether it's a Finalyzer 96K or analog boxes is up to your preferences and budget. The Finalyzer goes for pretty cheap used - it's almost 10 years old now. I bring the bounced stereo stems back onto 2 tracks and use Native eqs with an Alan Smart C1 +/or a Fatso externally. Izotope Ozone is also a good all in one software tool for Mastering.

Try sending it to a mastering house...you'd be surprised what they can do.

That being said the more you improve your recording techniques the easier it is to mix and the more you improve your mixing abilities the less mastering is needed.

edit: wtf do I know...I hit mixes with sticks

Yup, kind of what I was expecting.

I could learn a lot by using the master house for two songs and trying to make my mixes in PARIS as close to it on their own.

What I read in the TC manual was pretty much things we can do in the global or 2 ch stereo stems, but would be a bit hard for me. The TC consolidates pretty good into one package. This I can do.

I will check out the Ozone.

For about $200 bucks I think I'm leaning towards Ozone. I've got a demo/trial that I downloaded and I'm testing as we speak. Thanks for the heads up on this one.

If you wind up liking Ozone, check out Izotope's "Alloy" channel strip plugin too. Adds some really nice alternatives to the PARIS EQs and compressors, and we find it "plays nicely" with PARIS too.
