It's snowing hard here and I haven't had time to hitch up the draft horses,
knap new tips for the flint spear and arrow points and fight through the
packs of ravenous wolves to get to the kitchen.

Rick, be persistent with them about fixing it for free! Don't give up so
quickly. Tell them what happened last time with the G4 800FW machine. Tell
them you are vary unhappy about a second machine being defective. Do a search
to see if this is a problem others are having with your model. If so, bring
it up to them. You should take it in to the genus bar and talk to a tech
in person, you'll have a better chance of it getting fixed for free. Two
days out of warranty, they should fix it. Tell them you found the problem
before it was out of warranty, but you just got around to seeing them about
it.

Just so you know, the MOBO on your laptop was manufactured by Intel.

(sorry Rick..not laughing at you.......just the ridiculousness of the
situation. This kind of stuff is a prime reason that I don't go Mac.)

james,

i've done some preliminary searches but if it's like my other mac the
problem will stay denied for a couple of years. the other problem is
that i'm not the purchaser of the computer. i installed wood flooring
in a friends house and was paid with the mac (bought as a refurb) for
the installation. he offered to purchase additional warranty (2 more
years) but was turned down.

i'll have to ask him if he gave them a date of discovery vs date of
calling in on the problem. but i have to admit i doubt they'll buy
it.

thanks

Rick, refurbished units have the same warranty as new, if it was purchased
from Apple. Have him take it in. I'd go with him. If he can't go, take
it in yourself, they might still fix it.

So then you get to spend the time (how much is your time worth?) jacking
around with this when a motherboard should be available for sale at Fryes,
or online for no more than $150.00. If any more than two hours is involved
in this, then he's already lost money.

DJ, although the MOBOs are vary similar to a PC MOBO, I believe the Mac MOBOs
have a proprietary Apple designed ROM chip/chip set. OSX will not support
a PC MOBO out of the box. Also, this is a laptop, so I doubt you could get
a replacement vary easily.

Deej I know your rather anti Mac, but there are some things to consider.
Rick's situations are unusual, there not the norm. Apple like all manufactures
has had some defective products, but it is a vary low amount for Apple.
Some times they have a run of bad products, and the problem shows up later,
like the bad Sony batteries everybody got. When I sold the Radius Mac clones,
I got a bunch of machines where IBM soldered a chip on backwards on the MOBOs.
That stuff happens from time to time.

You say that it's a prime reason you don't go with Macs. First, if you research
it, you will find that the great majority of Mac owners have had vary good
luck with their Apple hardware. Look in to Apples customer satisfaction
records. Mac users love their Macs for good reason. Rick is the acceptation.

A prime reason I and many others don't go the perceived cheap route and build
PCs every time out, is because it's not the cheap route. The word cheap
does come to mind though. The after market cheap stuff is cheap Chinese
junk. I've built them, I know. It fries, or it's DOA. It's usually problematic,
it's supposed to be standardized, but half the stuff doesn't even work together.
Some of the stuff takes proprietary drivers to work and it's not compatible
with other stuff. Not to mention all the bad drivers. It's all headaches.

I've watched for years while you and others here built machines only to have
stuff not be compatible. Then you've wasted your money on incompatible hardware,
and now you have to do a bunch of research to find the right hardware and
spend more money. How many mother boards have fried on you and others here?
How about the cheap shit power supplies? How many video cards have you
and others had to buy? What about problems with drivers? How much have
you had to spend over the years in return shipping costs? How much time
and money have you had to spend on security? How much money and time, which
is money, have you had to spent screwing with the supposed cheap route?
What about the hassle factor and the amount of frustration you alone have
had to go through? It's an unnecessary struggle.

You of all people should buy a Mac and simplify your life. You should really
try a Mac for a year before you knock them. You would keep a PC around,
but you'll never really go back. If you ever get a Mac, get the mac Pro
Tower for audio, don't screw around with a laptop. An Apple Macintosh computer
is the best and most versatile personal computer on the market today.

OK. Fair enough. I agree that a laptop mob would be an expensive situation
no matter who the manufacturer was........but.....if this was a tower, what
would be the cost of a new mobo?

Hey Rick! I talked to an Apple store manager. He said to get that machine
in to an Apple store A.S.A.P. He also said you could call him, his name
is Josh he's at 248 822-0081. I wouldn't mention that your the second owner.
If you can't bring in your machine, he said to call Apple care support,
you might get lucky. You can go to the Apple support page and punch in the
serial number to get warranty information on your system. You can go here:
http://www.apple.com/support/hardware/. Pick your model, and punch in your
serial number on the right.

You should flash your system with the latest firmware. Go to Apple support
page for the firmware. This could be your problem. If they fix it for you,
you should buy the extended warranty! On a laptop it's worth it.

What ever you do don't wait.

Well Deej, to some degree you've got me there, they start around $600.00.
However, there are some things to consider. First, by now I'm sure you
know that not all mother boards are created equal. Apple's MOBOs are not
cheap junk. Once again they cost more because they are not mass produced,
and there is supply and demand that figures in. If you only look at the
replacement price then I guess you win, but there is more to it.

Consider this, if you got a new Mac, for the first year the MOBO is covered.
If you have a problem with the MOBO they will most likely replace it, at
no cost. At the end of that year you can add the apple care warranty that
covers the machine for two more years. Three years is about the life of
a PC anyways. When Apple discontinues a model they sell off the MOBOs to
third party Mac repair dealers at vary discounted rates. So after a couple
of years you can buy replacement MOBOs a lot cheaper, if you had a problem.

Since your in a rural area, if you had a problem you would call Apple's 800
tech support number. If they could not get you up and running they would
have your machine picked up, some times the same day. You'd box your machine
up and FedEX would show up to pick it up. Turn around is usually a few days,
but often next day. It's a smooth process. If you take it in to an Apple
store it's usually same day, while you wait.

Yes the Apple Care extended warranty cost $249.00 for a MacPro tower, but
it's a great way to insure that you will stay up and running and protect
your investment. I highly recommend this for any of the portables. Apple
care for the consumer models is $149.00 and $169.00. Three years worry free,
and no wrenching is worth it. There is also Apple's ProCare plan that gives
you additional benefits and personal training.

Deej, maybe you should try a Mac Pro tower when they come out with the new
models. You could give it a spin for a year and sell it before the warranty
runs out, or keep it and get the Apple care extended warranty. Macs retain
their value better than a PC, so I don't think it would be that much of a
loss. Apple some times runs a 6 month same as cash deal also. The other
option is to lease one for a year and write it off as a business expense.
You'd have the best of both worlds.

The worst that could happen, is you could get hooked.

there sure is, like the fact that any computer these days is obsolete in 9
months.........

Dell has the same thing here...................

Pay $249.00 for warranty on a machine that is obsolete?

No...the worst that could happen is that I could spend the upfront $$$$ for
Applecare and then spend another $249.00 for extended warranty on an
obsolete machine when I could take that money and use it to build a new
Wintel machine in a year that will kick the obsolete Mac's ass.

Sorry James....this is the exact reason I just built my wife a windows
machine and all new software that runs on PC. It's fast, easy to maintain
and cheap to replace.

Hey James - that's my issue with Macs as well. We could have purchased a
$250/yr warranty for my wife's Mac, but after two years, at $500 it would
have cost almost the same as the motherboard it needs ($700).

For $250 a year, I can buy a new motherboard and cpu for most any PC (after
1-2 years, that's the cost of the board and cpu for most any PC, other than
the very leading edge server models (not the stock Mac desktops).

Macs to me have just never made financial sense for that reason. I can also
upgrade a PC for $150 or so to a faster cpu/motherboard without losing the
value of the rest of the components. With a Mac, an upgrade pretty much
means buying a new Mac. Not a very cost effective investment, imho.

That's where Apple needs to do some soul-searching.

Regards,
Dedric

Apple care is the extended warranty. My point was that the Apple Care extended
warranty is optional and you have a year to decide if you want at add it
or not. I have ten macs here, I've never had a problem with them. I've
owned Macs since 1994 and I've never had a fried MOBO. I messed up a hard
drive on my iBook once, but I think it was user error. Apple replaced it,
no problem.

I've never had an Apple Care warranty on any of my Macs accept the iBook,
and it sure came in handy. I've had nothing but good luck with my Macs,
I can't say the same thing with my PCs. I believe that if you got a Mac,
it would be problem free, and you'll be able to use a Mac for a lot longer
than a PC before it actually becomes obsolete.

The processors are upgradable in the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro tower. The
RAM, hard drives, and video card in the tower are all upgradeable.

Apple care warranties cost between $149.00 and $249.00. The warranty extends
the original warrant from one year to three years, and it includes full tech
support. It's not $249 per year.

I guess you can't see what I see. I'll say again, you get what you pay for.

It depends on the model. The processors are upgradable in the Mac Mini and
the Mac Pro tower. The RAM, hard drives, and video card in the tower are
all upgradeable.

Apple care warranties cost between $149.00 and $249.00 for three years.
The warranty extends the original warrant from one year to three years, and
it includes full tech support. It's not $249 per year.

PC motherboard for a 2-year old PC: $70.
Motherboard for a 3 year old dual G4 Mac: $700.

Apple care for that Mac: $249.
PC care: $0.

Freedom to save money: priceless.

;-))

No matter how you slice it, the Mac just cost more than two of my PCs.

Add all your time in! Add all the time it takes to maintain your systems.
Start with security administration per week. add in all the stuff I pointed
out to Deej, and then tell me what it all costs.

The last G4 was in January 2003, by summer the G5 was out. By the way, you
can buy a new core 2 duo MacMini for $499.00, and it's upgradable.

the serial number is how apple new the date of warranty expiration.
as i said before the turned down the offer of the extended warranty
purchase. since you're under the belief i'm on a laptop (and i'm not)
i have not downloaded any of the security updates as the mac is not on
the net. and most if any updates are mostly geared to the mactel.

James -

Security admin?? Have you been watching those Apple ads for data research
again? ;-) Sorry, no security admin here. Actually no admin at all. I
turn on my PCs and start working. The most time I spend on any system issue
is installing new audio hardware or software. And I don't have to worry
about scaling down my work by being limited to only 3 or 4 PCI(e) slots.

I know you are a diehard Mac guy, and that's cool. I've owned and used both
for years and am only diehard about making the best investment and getting
the most performance. Macs are fine for a lot of users, but not because
they are better, faster or cheaper. They just run a proprietary OS with
more limited hardware upgrade options because of it. I check every
component and potential cost everytime I consider adding a new computer, and
without fail, Macs have yet to prove a better investment. They are not
easier to maintain, upgrade or cheaper to buy. If you have a problem, they
can be even more difficult to troubleshoot and fix than a PC, short of
reinstalling the OS, which is never a time saver.

Rick - sorry for the OT detour - it's your thread, not a Mac vs. PC debate.
Hope you get the Mac fixed.

Regards,
Dedric

rick, where are you located? What model and configuration do you have? You
can make an appointment at the genus bar and go to an Apple store if you
have one near you. If your just out of warranty they will most likely fix
it for free.

To find a store near you where you can take it in, go to:
http://www.apple.com/retail/

Here is Apple's support page. You can check to see if your model is up to
date with the latest firmware, etc.

i'm in williamston mi. about 17 miles out of lansing. i called the
mac dealer here this morning (same company under a different name that
i dealt with on the G4...they remembered me) and he said my best
recourse was to deal directly with apple.

i'm waiting for the state list to load as i type (dial up) and it
looks like either grand rapids or 12 oaks...so i'll give them a call
and see what they say.

james,

you must have special powers or something cuz no matter what number i
dialed i get the same voice recording with the same options which lead
me to apple care. i called 12 oaks and somerset. i even waited till
they got to the "other question selection (#5) which then gave me the
same options as before but with a different voice recording. so i
have no idea how to get a hold of josh...unless he's an apple care
guy.

I just called in last night and got through. Josh is a manager at Summerset
in troy MI. Your best bet is to schedule and appointment on line with the
Mac genus bar closest to you and take it in. I think you should go in with
the guy you got it from, or be prepared to say you guys were in business
together or something. Maybe get a note from him. It will be harder to
get them to honor a second party with the expired warranty.

I thought I heard they have a Lansing store, oh well.

No, I've been using PCs! So tell me you can load Windoz XP and go on the
internet without loading some kind of security software? If you do you will
have all kinds of problems with your PC and in no time it will grind to a
halt. That's what I'm talking about. If you get the free stuff, you are
likely to have the free software install a bunch of junk on your PC. You
will also have to get multiple security softwares to install on your PC because
no one software covers every thing that's out there. So it cost money to
buy good security software.

So the solution here is build one PC for audio and don't go on the net with
it, and build another PC for cruising the net. What does that cost? We
could go around with this for the next ten years.

Mac OSX is a better operating system, that's why Microsoft keeps trying to
copy it!!!!! Vista is such a blatant rip off of the look and feel of Mac
OSX it's just sad! And it's security is a joke! Maybe you should watch
the Apple ads. It's time to switch to the real thing, not a sad knock off.
But the sheeple will buy the lie like they did in 1995.

Well, you statement totally contradicts the studies that hues aircraft, boeing,
and the United states Navy did on the number of support personnel needed
to maintain PCs vs. Macs, and the difficulties. there in.

Reinstalling the OS is something that is vary common with Windows XP, not
Mac OSX.

In all my years as a Mac user and authorized Mac dealer I've only heard of
one person having a fried mother board on a Mac. That person dumped a full
glass of water in to the keyboard by accident, while the machine was running.
Then there is you and rick, and the problems you guys have had. I'm sure
somebody will pipe in here to tell Mac fried MOBO stories, come on LaMont
I know your out there.

Deej stated that he doesn't go with Macs because of the problems rick is
having and the expense. It seems that their is a preconceived notion that
Macs have the same kind of failure rate as the cheap after market PC MOBOs
do. They do not. I thought it was hypocritical of Deej to knock the Mac
when he has had so many problems with all the cheap after market MOBOs frying
and the problems he has had with other PC parts, such as video cardsand drivers.
Macs have problems, but they are rare.

A Mac purchase is a pretty safe bet as far as reliability, the cheap after
market PC stuff is a whole other story. Deej has proven this over the years
with quit a bit of failed PC parts. Yes, Deej knows PC part suckage! Deej
does own a G4 400MHz, but he doesn't use Macs, he just knocks them. By the
way, I believe his vintage 1999 G4 Mac is still running to this day.

It's true that the replacement cost on a Mac MOBO is more expensive. My
other point with Deej was, if he ever got a new Mac and was really worried
about the MOBO frying, he could get the Apple care warranty for $249.00 for
three years of full coverage with full tech support. I was just trying to
point out his options. Some people get it and some people don't. The bottom
line is Macs are easy to use and hassle free, and that is worth a lot. The
security problems and the cost of those problems on PC are unacceptable.
The security on a Mac is built in, you don't have to pay extra, or use some
freeware that will screw up your machine further. It's all part of why a
mac cost more, but it really doesn't. You get what you pay for. Until you
really use a Mac, you won't really know.

This brings me to a question for you Dedric. Do you use a New Mac running
Mac OSX 10.4 on a daily basis? How about Deej?

If Apple and the Macintosh computer suck so bad, why does Microsoft keep
trying to copy them?

If you just don't like Macs, that's cool! I don't care. Just don't knock
them every time they are mentioned, or there is a problem with one. It would
be pretty easy to knock PCs every time you guys have a problem, which is
just about every other day.

I think enough has been said on this subject! Why don't we close it.

God forbid that I should be hypocritical. I have owned Macs since 1994. The
OS just sucks IMO in comparison to Windows and while we're speaking of
hypocrites, the hypocritical business practices of Apple is another reason I
don't go with Mac. You refer to the amount of money I spend on PC's. I do it
because I choose to because it allows me choices. If the new Macs still had
PCI slots, then it might allow a bit more flexibility for the hardware I
choose to use.....did you ever thing of that???......no.....because you, as
a "sheeple", slavishly allow yourself to get dragged by the nose wherever
Mr. Jobs cares to take you......and I have had hardware problems with Macs
too.

Have a nice ****'in day you *****

Hey James.........apologies for the venom. Stuff going on here (non audio or
PC related) that has me a bit riled up at the moment. My day job can be a
bit stresful and I am currently dealing with some pretty hypocritical
people, so you puched a button with that particular keyword. A bad time to
be trying to carry on a civil discussion.

Yeah, OS9 sucked. OSX doesn't. I have a few criticisms, but it's the
better choice IMO.

The older kind of PCI slots, you're right about that. Apple likes to be
first with the latest thing and they probably don't mind obsoleting
things, too. That's one reason I went with a firewire interface instead
of PCI. It's worked on my G4 tower, my laptop and my G5, and will work
with the next machine, too.

No matter what systems you choose, the computer world is full of these
kinds of decisions and minefields. We're all being dragged by the nose
in some respect, eh?

Hope your day is going better.

Cheers,
-Jamie

going with the guy that bought it for me (it's not second hand from
him) is a bit problematic as he's a doctor. so it's a bit tough for
him to get away. i'll try the net connect, though when i checked it
out today it said i should contact them by phone and when i phoned it
told me to contact them on the net.

there is no lansing mac store per se. there is an authorized
dealer/service (capitol macintosh) and they're the ones who told me to
call apple as they could not help me due to the expired warranty.

If the computer was originally registered to you, your OK. If not you guys
were business partners, and your just bring ing it in now. You had the problem
months ago and you just got around to it. It's quite a drive for you.
