Hey Deej,
What do you really do far a living anyway? I should have known you must
have a day job... You buy too much gear to be a starving musician/recording
studio owner like me!

I run Antivir on my laptop, which is the only PC connected to the net and
it doesn't cost anything either in time or money. I haven't had a virus, or
spyware,
and of course I don't download suspicious free crap either. Not sure why
anyone
would actually. Is that why Mac users buy Macs? To download suspicious
freeware
and spyware? ;-)
My wife has several free apps running on her Mac - dashboard apps,
Google Earth, etc. It's noticeably slower, and causes crashes with other
apps frequently (esp.
Firefox, Entourage, etc - we would use Safari, but it doesn't have a
bookmark sidebar).
Dashboard takes 5-10 seconds to open and run due to the apps accessing
the net or whatever. I only use the calculator in DB, but almost not worth
the wait,
and it has to be clicked or reopened half the time to get it to work).

No. Cruising the internet/checking email on the same systems just doesn't
make any sense
and is an unnecessary tax on memory and the cpu, even if it is quite small -
that could be an
EQ plugin right there.

Really? I didn't know I should have been reinstalling Windows... and after
all these
years, you still learn something new. ;-) Fyi, I've never had to reinstall
Windows.

Our G4 board isn't fried - the USB buss is defective.

James, I have been giving you are a hard time because you are so adamant
about your
opinion and can't seem to see both sides of the picture for the Apple in
front of you. I simply make
my platform choices based on what gets more work done for my investment. I
actually like
Macs for what they are - I just can't justify one for 90% of what I do.
I can easily see the pros and cons on both sides and that's what I assess
when buying or building.
I know there are Mac users that can as well, but it does seem that Mac users
are far more
defensive than PC users. I was just yanking your chain because you always
carry it with you in these discussions.
I was just having a little fun my friend.
No hard feelings. My wife is a diehard Mac users as well, as are the
video/film producers I work with.
I just can't kid around with her the way I can here - it seldom ends well
for me regardless - and well,
kidding around with clients never works out to well either. :-)

It's ironic, but a friend of mine here in Kansas City is probably the top
video editor in town, in the top commercial video house. He uses a PC to
run his AVID system because Macs aren't fast enough to keep up with his moves.
But he actually is a mac guy and uses macs for all his personal stuff.

Safari has a bookmarks toolbar at the top, handy enough. I haven't had
Firefox crash here, that's weird. Google Earth runs fine. I wonder

I'm doing it now with no probs on this Mac. There's generally plenty of
CPU to spare on the dual G5 and I multitask a lot. For some projects w/
lots of samples or a big graphics project I might cut back on the
multitasking to free up some RAM. Probably should add more RAM (it can
hold 8GB, the new ones 16GB).

Maybe at the moment he bought that system it had a speed advantage, but

Heh - you really need to see a real system running a full tilt. ;-)
There's just something sweet about having systems dedicated to getting work
done rather than sharing with email, just waiting for Tink, Glass or Sosumi
to interrupt the workflow, or ruin a good take.

.... which reminds me, I still need to transfer the last batch off of my
laptop(PC) - easier to organize there and take on vacation than the G4
tower, and Vegas is quicker to make movies in than Final Cut (just razzing
you - Final Cut is great - it's almost as fast as Vegas). ;-)
Oooh this is fun. I like this game! I should write PC vs. Mac ads. ;-))

Apps should be available and waiting for you, not the other way around.
So some level of multitasking makes sense for what I do. I've been

Heh. No it was on an intel pentium box running MSWindows. If you've
never gone through that, good. It aged me.

time, but it's a running theme.
I guess it's the Burger King of computers - "have it your way", anytime you

Yes. It has supported 24p HDV for a while. Just found a Vegas user on the
forum with the A1 a few minutes ago. Vegas 7 supports XDCAM MFX and HD-SDI
at 24p.
I see FCP 6 Extreme will have 2k and 4k support. Pretty cool - gonna take a
quad quad, or several to edit/render though, and a bigger wallet than past
FCP releases ($10k rumored for FCP Ext? But then again, if you can afford to
shoot in 4k that's pennies).

Yep, must be the G5, every year I use it I get a year younger.
Not really, but I'm pretty sure I age slower running OSX than if I had
to pull my hair out over that crazy cobbled excuse for an OS you subject

Great! It's pretty cool, I've matched the A1 to my favorite Panasonic
24P look. Right now I'm editing a music vid I shot that way, and I'm
doing a concert shoot tomorrow.
Er, that is, I meant to say I'm curled up in the corner not doing work
because I don't have a neato commodity yugo computer running on recycled
horse manure, like you. :^)

You have the A1? Nice looking camera. A buddy here in CS just picked up
the Sony V1U - looks pretty cool
as well - a step or two up from the FX1 I used to have. The new lines of HDV
cams are pretty sweet.
