Got this up and running reliably today. Great for tracking midi events while
being able to monitor the VST instruments in real time while tracking other
audio channels to the master DAW using ASIO diect monitoring. Just make ASIO
direct monitoring is chosen on both machines for maximum efficiency. It's a
dream for this sort of thing (and the audio from the VSTi that is being
monitored can also be recorded to the master DAW if desired). Once you're
finished tracking and you're in a mix, disable ASIO diorect monitoring on
both DAWs, set the buffers of both DAWs to the same latency and the VSTi's
that are being played back in V-Stack (on the the slave DAW), triggered by
the midi events on the master DAW (Cubase 4) are delay compensated during
playback. This sure does take a load off the main playback DAW.

DJ,

I got my 8 pre hooked up and running.
I ended up getting a Thermaltek 630w PS.
Everything seems to running fine except a couple of glitches.
1. I hear noise like electrical interference from time to time thru my monitors.
2. When I use NI Battery VSTI it makes a pop every time it plays back a sample.
I is very noticeable it is lick a click or pop at the beginning of every
sample it plays.
3. I tried recording MIDI to a MIDI track and audio from the same
device that the MIDI was coming from.(TD-10 drum module).
I press record and the audio starts recording right away, but the MIDI doesn't
start showing that it is recording until
4 bars later it starts to draw what it recorded 4 bars earlier.
So when I press stop recording it doesnt record the last 4 bars of what ever
was just played.
I tried doing the same thing with my keyboard and I beleive everything worked
correctly. What could have been the cause of this with the TD-10???
My buffer is set to 1024.
I wasn't needing to monitor while I recorded so I didnt think it mattered.
I notice that Cubase is a little sluggish when I enable the release asio
driver in background function.
I will even crash. So I turned it off.

Wow. DJ, I've used System Link before and I've used Cubase for almost 20
years, but I still could not really follow what you just wrote. Maybe it's
just my Sunday afternoon mellow. I don't want to work that hard right now.

Hmmm..well.......since I'm a midiot, perhaps I'm explaining it in
midiotspeak..................but anyway, it's working for me. I'm now trying
to get my head around a few of the bigger apps like BFD, Bandstand and GPO.
These can use multiple channels and I'm going to have to move one or more of
them to a different port or .....hell.....I dunno........like I said, I'm a
midiot!

Midi drives me absolutely nuts, but I'm getting closer to a situation where
it will be preconfigured and hopefully I woun't have to go in and jack
around with patches/channels/banks/ports, etc. so much. GPO is especially
troublesome &^%$#%%$%^!!!!!.........but then again, it's especially flexible
too.
