Thought you might want to consider my latest Mac techno-playground. OS-X is
great, but the Macbook Pro can do so much more.
I've now got my Macbook Pro (Intel) running XP, Vista and Ubuntu Ultimate
Edition Linux (desktop and server) simultaneously inside Mac OS-X using Parallels
(VM).
The cool thing is that the latest release of Parallels has a feature called
"Coherence" that allows XP or Vista apps to run side by side with the Mac
apps as if they were actually in OS-X (but they are running XP.) One can
drag and drop folders and files between OSs, as well as copy/cut and paste
between OSs. Outrageously cool!
One can also run the VM OSs full screen at full res. So it looks and acts
just like a (gasp) PC. Very very cool to have all that on one laptop, plus
full net access, USB, DVD/CD, etc. Each VM OS can be independently started,
stopped and PAUSED. So no more waiting for slow boots and shutting down.
Just pause the OS until you need it.

The only hitches are 1) Microsoft will only allow certain Vista versions
to be installed in VM and
2) the glitzy Aero graphics in Vista isn't supported by Parallels yet. I'm
sure they'll add support for that as well as Ubuntu Beryl's GL magic. If
you haven't seen that search Youtube for a Beryl vs Vista comparison video.

Steve,
Another great post.
VMS are the BOMB! no matter what platform you are on.
My development environment is 100% VM now. Visual studio, outlook, office,
openoffice, everything runs in a 100% self contained VM. The only thing I
leave for the real machine is the stuff that needs direct hardware access.
The fun part is that I also now have a commodore 64 virtual machine with
my favorite carts from 1983! (thanks to openDos and VICE running in a VM)
I have VMS for XP, Windows Server 2003, 2000, NT 3.51, 4.0 and whatever the
heck else I need. I will never, ever install a piece of software to the
physical machine again, unless it needs direct hardware access.

I'm officially platform agnostic now that I have VMs of at least 5 linux distros,
and can try anything I want at the drop of a hat at the expense of disk space,
and no risk to my physical machine.
The only thing I can't get, that I want is OSX running in a VM

You guys are the uber-geeks, for sure -- this is soooo over my head,
it ain't funny...
And yet... I'm intrigued enough to check out this "parallels" link,
and look forward to soon becoming profoundly confused (in my spare
time, of course...).
