It's for my wife, actually and she uses an EV N/D257.
As to budget, I'm thinking $500-700 or so. Is that realistic?

Bill,
I've been using a set of the Shure SLX's, the handheld with the SM58
head (Beta 58 also available). It's been rock solid for my wife (we
also use four packs for two headsets and two guitars). Had them for
nearly three years and using most weekends. They've work great and
they're defninitely in the price range.
If you want to go a little more you can get a ulxs with the Beta 87A
head, more channels, some say better mic, $769 at Geetar Center.

Bill,
I use a Sennheiser and it kicks too. Tone is very clear
compared to a 58 but still a dynamic.
The newest wireless setups have a muting circuit to eliminate
the squeal/squelch that can kill your speakers/mood if=20
you leave the mic off and the receiver on by accident.
There will also less frequencies available in the future
so multiple frequency transmission/reception is going to become
more important from what I've read. Maybe something that
hasn't been dealt with presently in hardware.

I had not considered a condenser because I thought they would be too
pricey, plus I didn't think a condenser element is really necessary for
live sound, however I found a couple on ebay that are not too expensive.
The vocalist (my wife) who will be using it has a very clear voice,
medium volume. She sings all styles and also a lot of jazz. A condenser
could be a good choice for her. Any recommendations as to when a
condenser is a good idea and when not?

It's a good idea when you have a female vocalist with nuance.
It's a really bad idea when you have a small stage and a drummer right
behind her. Picks up everything around her. I personally will never touch
another 87a for a typical club date... feedback and bleed aren't worth it.
Gimme a larger stage or a solo/jazz gig and we'll talk. Take this advice
with the fact that I use about 7000w on the mains in clubs, understanding
relation to your situation.
If she's used to the sound/pattern of a N/D 257, the Beta 58 will be your
best choice for least learning curve anyway. And unlike a standard 58, the
Beta won't pick up everything within 15 cardiod feet of her.

That's useful info. You never know how little space you may have in
casual dates and all too often you have the singer right in front of the
drummer, with the band spread out to either side.
