I've always been intrigued by what I've read about Gov't Mule (and I once
played in a C&W show band out of Nashville w/ Allan Woody) but I've never
heard any of their stuff. Does anyone here listen to them? Any suggestions
for a Gov't Mule smapler?

Oops. I meant to say 'SAMPLER'. Not 'SMAPLER'.
A smapler is a whole 'nother thing altogether.

I agree..with most of TCB's assessment..but I saw the "Allman Bros" last
fall...Greg sang about 4 songs the whole show.Warren sang TOO much. And too
many of his originals..their"jams" sounded scripted,and I didn't hear any
real blues coming from Derek Trucks...technically good slide artist, but
blues....not. In fact when Warren briefly played slide,it had much more of
the old "duane" thang than Trucks ever did..

I respect everyone's taste...but the trend in rock music seems to me to be
- with each generation of admittedly artificially pigeonholed or categorized
artists - that the playing has remained constant or even improved on a technical
level, but the spirit and the songwriting has gone downhill.

are before my time, and I also like alot of new artists and keep my ears
open. It justs seems like certain cultural flashpoints happen and generations
of artists capture the letter but not the spirit of the original stuff.

disavow all (or some) of these opinions tomorrow.

This attitude drives me up the wall, Hendrix to one side. Blah blah blah,
sixties sixties sixties, no spirit today, blah blah blah. Try out Paul Westerberg,
Lyle Lovett, Big Star, Jeff Tweedy, Thievery Corporation, and Al Jourgenson
if you want some amazing, interesting new voices.

Love many of the artists you name....I am anything but a '60's worshipper.
Just speaking to artists that are ostensibly part of - or could be viewed
as part of - a certain lineage. ie....the Southern Rock lineage, the Blues
Rock guitar slinger lineage, the Beatlesque lineage, etc. This thought was
just extension of the Govt Mule falling short of the Allmans due to songwriting
train of thought expressed, I think by you, but possibly by someone else
in the thread...I didn't at all mean to imply that there was no orignal stuff
going on now, just pointing out a certain trend of watering down in terms
of writing.
But...if I may drive you further up the wall.....I love the latest Wilco
record, own all their albums actually, and have opened for them, but wouldn't
consider Tweedy to be highly original, and I wouldn't stack Sky Blue Sky
up against Music from Big Pink. I love (and own) all the Big Star records,
but I wouldn't stack them up against the Beatles or Kinks.
Westerberg is an original voice in my mind as well.
Did you mean to cite Lyle Lovett, The Replacements, Big Star or Wilco
as NEW artists? Or was this just speaking to a 60's fixation that I don't
actually have but was, I guess, implied by my post?

First of all, as I said, Hendrix is kept out of this. He was from Mars, and
there is nobody in his 'lineage' and there never will be. Boxing him with
with SRV (a fine guitarist to be sure) is like comparing a Ferrari to a Camry.
Most, but not all, of the music you mention is 60's era stuff, and it was
mentioned in the context of songwriting. I think Westerberg stacks up against
plain only anyone. Is 'September Girls' as good as 'Waterloo Sunset?' I dunno,
I'd say it depends on my mood, but if it isn't it's damn close and they both
literally give me shivers when I hear them.
Your first post seemed to be about quality, and the examples I gave were
people who are in the rough tradition of songwriting you mention. I'm sure
there are others out there now, but I quit listening actively to rock/pop/folk
about ten years ago. This post is about originality, and if you want that
I'm afraid you're going to have to look in the Kraftwerk legacy, which finds
its way all through electronic, hip hop, dance hall, and R&B music. But they're
just recycling loops and samples and have no talent as I've been told repeatedly
here.
Bottom line, if a person can't find great new music it's because they're
not looking hard enough.
