new motherboard confusion [message #92640]

Hello everyone,

A few questions...

I see that the Intel P35 boards need 1.8v RAM... so what is recommended
here? It seems like most of the "good" RAM (Corsair or Super Talent) is
2.1v.

P35 motherboard:

And now I'm horribly confused about PCIe 1x vs 16x slots. Obviously the
16x is for video... but on some motherboards there are 3 16x slots and
NO 1x slots. Does anyone know if PCIe cards such as the RME and UAD1e
stuff will work in a 16x slot?

Hi Graham,

The 1.8v is a recommended default. They all work with 2.1v.
I would go with the P35 board for the 1333sb support. It also has 3 PCI
slots instead of 2.
16x slots on most motherboard will be compatible with devices 1x and
higher.
Not sure if you noticed this but 99% of all motherboards only have 1
true 16x slot the 2nd of 3rd slot are 8x or even 4x only.
The only real benefit to having 2 full 16x slots would be for 2 video
cards in SLI or crossfire mode for gaming or 3d work.

On the P35 board the UAD card will work in 2 of th PCI-e slot that are
on the south bridge. The one on the north bridge if flaky with them.
That is the case with most motherboards.

So basically on the P35 you will have 3 PCI slots and 2 usable PCI-e
slots for audio devices.

I think I'm just having a real Monday... for whatever reason Seagate
7200.10 SATA 320gb drives aren't available from Newegg. Weird.

We have been having trouble getting them too.
Been swapping most people out to the 500 lately.

Are the 250gb ones any good? I'm a little hesitant to go bigger than
320 right now, even with backups...

I've been using three Barracudas......a pair of 750G and a 500G. No
problems.

320 and higher.
better and faster
if a drive dies it won't make a difference if it 250 or 1000. Its dead. :)
