I have been doing the go-round with Symantec email support for a
week now and nothing they make, none of the 2008 products
will install on the Dell laptop. (Inspiron 6400)
Man, I have gone through page after page of their suggestions
and tried everything the suggest and nothing will install.
Not Antivirus, not Internet Security, not System Works, not
nothing.
A ballpeen hammer would make me feel much better right now...
Ideas? Are there better products, that actually install, for
these uses?

Alternatives? Anything is better than Norton, imo. Sounds like it's now
resorted to locking it's own
install out in an attempt to prevent you from harming your computer -
definitely for the best. Probably
the best move Norton ever made. lol.
TCB and others will have more and better recommendations, but you could try
AVG's Antivir

I'm pretty disgusted with them...
It's Vista-ready they say, but is XP at this point.

Antivir is perfectly good tech. I like these guys as well.

Norton Corporate Edition is actually tolerable.
That said, the 'classic' virus attack is less and less what to worry about.
I'd be more concerned about phishing and that sort of stuff.
And, of course, you could just put Debian on it.

Problem is that all my analysis and DSP controller aps won't run on it.

The free version is virus only, the higher end pay stuff has more of the 'spyware'
type stuff. That said, rootkits, phishing attacks and such are a different
kettle of fish. Surf smart, go easy on the porn, be careful with email attachments,
don't connect to public networks unless you have to, and keep the Windows
firewall on because it's actually pretty good. Oh, and pull a ghost image
of your setup before you connect it to a network.
It's easy to make a computer secure, just unplug the network cable and turn
off the wireless adapter. It's hard to make it useful and secure though.

The one thing that always works from Norton is the
Norton Removal Tool. I just pulled all their stuff off the
computer and it worked great!

You're lucky. I've seen Norton kill a drive table making the system
unrecoverable w/o a total wipe.

I am so happy to find that I can run a PC successfully
w/o Symantec products, I can't tell you. I am pretty
uninformed on these things and you guys have been a
great help as always.
Funny, because Norton Utilities has always been the
gold standard for teching macs...
It's running great now with AVG Internet Security. My only
gripe with it is that until the computer fully boots you get
all kinds of horrified warnings about this or that component
of the app not running or being disabled! Once the thing
fully boots, all is well, but that is pretty clunky.

I'm with Chris. Got AVG on the recommendation of various folks on this NG
and haven't looked back. Got Mc'fee and orton on work computers -I don't

Many of us in Scandinavia are using Avast freeversion enabled without
any problems at all while using audioprograms. Have used it for years
with Cubase and Paris. www.avast.com . Now they have passed over 40
millions registered users, as far as their homesite is telling.
