My system has been down for long enough, the house is clean enough, and it's
time for makin' toons.
Today I've gone fault finding. I'd been told this error was usually an EDS
thing, so I've ripped (gently ;o) the cards out. One had a little rat poo.
Both look kinda warped after standing horizontal with no support in a PC
hanging on by the PCI slot and screw, and one has a point where it's all
black, and tracks may be burnt. Later tooth brush work reveals that it seems
to be "just" some corrosive stuff on the surface and the tracks *appear*
to be intact.
So I've cleaned them both up, reseated the daughter boards, dusted them off,
and put them back in. Same error. I try unplugging the 442. Same. I try using
the 442 not the MEC. Same (admittedly the 442 was still on the MEC workclock,
so...?).
I've already swapped out the C16 with one Deej sent which I'm sure is ok.
Would be very odd to have the same error on both, and I thought this error
was EDS-ish.
So I then try one EDS, then the other, and once again error 7/7. Do you need
any header multi-card cables on a single card system? I forget. Anyhow, I
had none, and same error.
I'm starting to think this is software because everything else has been swapped
out...
....ideas?

Hi Kim,
Triple check the SCSI 2 cable. It burned me 5 times!!!
Look at the pins and be sure they're straight. Use a different
one if you have one to swap with. Check it's pins too.
Next thoughts are, one eds - one 442 for hardware, nothing else.
Remove the default project and start Paris from the .exe only.
Still getting 7/7 try re-erasing the tabs on the eds card.
Still getting 7/7 try a different PCI slot. Could be some muck there =
too.
Still getting 7/7 then swap the Mec with the 442 again.

The MEC and 442 were each plugged in to their own cable, so I used two cables
in this process. Not a complete test, but unlikely at this stage.

I tried that with one EDS, not the other I don't think, but given that every
combination yields the same error, seems unlikely that the other EDS would
do it with the MEC...?

This is second priority methinks. Master card on every occurrence of the
error was in the same PCI slot. That one didn't really cross my mind stupidly.
Could very easily be...

Hi Kim,
I had the same thing happen to me in Windows 98 and XP if bus mastering was
turned on for my G400 video card. A newer driver fixed that in XP, but
I still have to have it off in 98.
You never know...

PS - as a total aside, I just read how IRQ sharing works in WDM drivers.
Every driver associated with an IRQ gets called, and ones that haven't actually
had an event happen for them check a parameter and exit after doing nothing.
I have no idea how a driver could screw with another one in this setup,
but it happened to me.

Yeah I see your point. If they each get called in turn anyhow, then how does
it fail?
Perhaps it is only possible for a single "IRQ 9" to have a turn in any one
go. In that case it would mean:
(*) IRQ sharing between identical devices would be ok if coded properly so
that the driver checks all hardware it owns whenever it gets control. Then
ALL the EDS cards would be checked whenever just one of them made the request.
Mmm. :o) So then, for example, if we placed lots of devices on the same IRQ
the driver itself could really get a lot through the hardware... as in what
I believe happens in a MAGMA. ;o)
(*) IRQ sharing with a different device would cause problems if the IRQ was
reaching busy point where most of the IRQ driver calls were being used up.
This would normally need two high data throughput devices. Say... Video
and Sound, say, for example. ;o)
Yes, I think that would explain it. Could be wrong. It's a theory though.

Kim, I had a 7/7 when I re-installed XP in my box and didn't follow the EDS
driver install exactly. I had just went into the device manager, seen the "?
audio device and did a right click/update driver from there = 7/7 error on
Paris start-up. Then I browsed to my EDS XP driver folder and used the
"setup.exe", she booted rite up.
P4, XPpro, 3 EDS, 2 MECs, 2 C16

Well a restore of the hdd image has done nuttin'. ;o)
This image has been restored several times and worked every time.
PCI slot test is next methinks... and/or IRQ's...

I've re-imaged the hdd with a known working image, which still doesn't work,
so all software-only solutions are pencilled off the list for now.
I also tried switching PCI slots. Now admittedly I used the other slot which
the other EDS was in, so if somehow they both blew then we'd still have trouble.
I'd guess that if more than one has blown then the whole board has blown,
or some BIOS thing may have changed.
But given I have tried two slots and reimaged the hdd...
....I'm starting to think the MB is fried. This MB has been nothing but trouble
after the first couple of weeks. It's been replaced twice and still acts
up. Maybe they don't like my Power Supply or something, but it's a Truepower.
Mmm.
Maybe I should just jump on ebay and find an appropriate second hand machine
with a 2 gig processor and just hand away my $250 and be fixed...

Hey Kim,
By 'tabs' I mean the male portion of the eds card that slips
into the PCI slot. I've read that a standard pencil eraser can clean
then them appropriately. If your deduction is hardware then
triple check the SCSI cables. I had to say it again. And try another=20
PCI slot again with a different scsi cable whos pins you've checked.
Mobo maybe?

I just tried running on the Interface 2. Same error, so no SCSI cables at
all, which, by the way, visually looked fine, and given I've got two I don't
want to get the meter out just yet...
....especially when the Interface 2 won't load...
Mmm. And tried the other C16 too...
Still could be MB...?

Have you tried firing up the EDS1000's solo, on each one, and having removed
the daughter/FX board?
It's just an eds 500 at that point, BUT it tells you if that portion of the
card will work.

I was checking the BIOS each bootup, and it did detect the "Paris Cafe" in
the BIOS PCI, so I think other cards would show given the EDS is, but I should,
at least, check if the Windows driver as an exclaimation mark next to it...

No, I haven't...
....however it seems unlikely that both cards went, unless the MB did something
freaky.
I'm very seriously thinking MB at the moment, but we'll start a new thread
after Christmas and go from there. :o)
