I am have been running PARIS 2.1 on a WIN98 PC without problems for about
8 years now. Yesterday, a client sent me 3 tunes on a DVD that were produced
with PARIS on a MAC. There are 32 tracks each. There are several project
files. Everytime I try to open any of the project files I get the error right
after selecting it. So they don't open at all. Can anyone shed any light
as to what is going on?
Any help would be appreciated.

I wonder if it has to do with some type of plugin that was used
on the project that you may not have (like a particular DirectX
plugin or a VST plug in a wrapper, etc)? Or perhaps a corrupt
audio file... the only time I remember getting a big long error
string code like that in Paris, it turned out to be a corrupt
file due to abd drive sector. Is it happeneing on all projects
from the Mac, or are you just trying one particular project?

Hi Neil,
Thanks for your effort on this.
There are about 20 PPJ files (in three different song directories). They
are all yielding this same error. The error appears right after selecting
any of the projects. I am able to create a new PPJ and load in the audio
files, but that's about it.
I am thinking that it might have to do with a previous plug-in (as you have
suggested) or possibly an equipment mismatch (I am using the MEC with one
card).

OK, lemme ask you this... do the audio files have a lot of
punches and/or edits? If not, what about trying to open/import
the files themselves, then save as a new project & start from
there as far as any more overdubbing & mixing you have to do?
Laborious, to be sure, especially if the files are not labeled
well, but better than not being able to work on them at all.
Might be worth a try just to see how much of a nightmare it may,
or - if you're lucky - may not, be.

Hi Neil,
It definitely works for me, because I have tried it, but the client says
he is on a tight budget. The whole idea was for him to send me the 3) tunes,
I would play back the edited tracks into .wav files, make a CD for him, and
then he would just finish up with ProTools, Logic, or whatever. Evidentally
the original PARIS system that he recorded and mixed these on doesn't exist
anymore.
Is there a utility that makes these PPJ's more generic?
Also, could I possibly send you (or someone) one of his project files to
see if you can open it?

Hi Aaron,
I don't know the answer to that question. I do know that the other machine
was a MAC. They might have had a later version, since it was done in 2006.
I never upgraded, because my system has been stable for all these years.
Could that be the problem?

Dave, I hope I'm wrong, but this may apply. It's an old post by the guy who
wrote Paris.
on the other hand, it may not. Only Edmund would know for sure...

7000001d = peFileHeaderCorrupt = project file data is corrupted
70000022 = peAudioFileCorrupted = audio file data is corrupted
Data on the disk is not valid. Sorry.

could be. If he was on paris version 3 then you wouldn't be able to open his
ppj's unless he saved in a specific way (like no FX on any auxes, anywhere).

Someone had suggested that this might be a simple matter of a version mismatch.
I am now also tending to lean that way. I am running 2.2, and these are probably
3.0 project files. I think the audio files are fine. I was able to load them
into a new project.
My customer needs assistance. Do you know anybody with 3.0 (preferably MAC)
that can help him? I have all the files on DVD that his producer has sent.
These are finished projects. There are three tunes with 32 tracks each. What
he needs is each comped track recorded to a .wav file. So that is probably
3-4 hours of work? (96 tracks) This is a paying gig and you (or whoever wants
to help) can charge accordingly. I have already given him a quote, but told
him I would try to find someone to take the project and would not charge
him.

I haven't cranked up 3.0 in years.
Nappy is in San Diego. Don't know if he's still using Paris 3.0, or if he
still has it, but I see a post from him from April where he was looking for
a C16 cable, so maybe he's still using it.
If not, he might well know someone in the area who does.

Two questions...
1.) is there any way to tell from the .ppj file (like maybe
opening it up in Notepad?) to see if it gives any info as to
whether it's a Paris v2.xx or v3 project file? That would
eliminate or prove the theory that that's the problem.
2.) How many tracks are we talking about in each project, and
are there a lot comps/punches/edits on most of them or just a
few here & there?

Hi Neil,
I looked through one of the project files with a hex/ascii editor. I couldn't
see a version # per se. I was able to see the old directories and thought
if I changed them to the currect PC directories it would solve the problem
but to no avail. I can send one of the original ppj's to see if you can open
it if you wish.
The client states that there are 32 tracks per project. There are 3 projects
to render. Of course, I have not been able verify that there are really 32,
because I can't open the files. There are probably lots of comps and edits,
because the customer spent 1 day per tune to get it right. I can tell that
because of the dates and time of the ppjs with the latest one reading "final".

I wonder if someone like Chuck might know how to ID a v3 ppj
file vs a v2? Just thinking that if that's not the issue, you
could have any number of people try to open those projects on
their v3 Paris rigs & they still might not be able to.
With regard to the # of tracks that have edits/punches/comps,
do you think the basic tracks have that too? I was just
thinking that if most of the tracks are single takes, but a
handful had punches/comps, etc, you might be able to import the
audio files & reconstruct the project, with the basic tracks
being a simple one-shot import, and with most of the labor
being spent on getting the overlaps/punch points right for the
overdubbed tracks. You'd have to have the artist there for that
portion, of course, so he could tell you which portions of the
take are "the one".
