Folks, I know this group is for Paris, but I am working on a project and I
am having issues I am hoping someone can help or direct me to the right place
for help.
Are there any Sonar gurus out there? What's going on is... I have a few
.wav files that I imported into tracks in Sonar 7. When I play them back,
I hear constant clicking, almost crackling on some of them. Especially on
one that is an acoustic recorded on a open mic. Almost sounds under water.
I thought something had gone wrong with the files.
So I imported them into Cubase (on the same notebook) and believe it or not,
they were clear! I also pulled each file up in Cool Edit and same results...
clear as a bell.
I went back to Sonar and tried to debug. First, I turned off the midi connection
(I don't use midi)... but other than that, I can't for the life of me, figure
out what is causing this noise in my imported clear files.
I haven't tried to track anything yet to see if I get the noise... but I
am hoping someone can shed some light. I am brand new to Sonar. Anyone?

Can it be one of two things, wrong wordclocksync or too low latency for
Sonar?

Hi Erlilo,
It perhaps is this, but I am clueless how to change these things and what
should I change them to. I never encountered these issues with Paris, so
I am a bit of a Noob.
Since the sound files work and sound clear as a bell in other programs,
it has to be the settings, but I am not sure where and what to change. You
get a thousand dollar program and you need an engineering degree to decipher
their language in their 3200 page users manual... it gets so frustrating.
And I thought this thing was suppose to be easy to use...
So can you remember where in the settings these things are located? And
perhaps what I should be setting them too?

I don't use Sonar but basically most of this kind of musicprograms have some
basics to look after when having these kind of problems. First, be sure it's
using a correct driver, for the most it's an Asio kind of things. Often,
when using these kind of programs for first time, there is a calibrating set
that will take care of the computer/audiocard speed etc. automatic. It's
setting up buffers, latency etc, to take care of problems like these you
mentioned here. But if Sonar have this kind of things, I don't know at all.

For those that attempted to help me, thank you. Just wanted to let you know
that I switched the audio from WDM to ASIO and that cleared up my click/pop/noise
issue. Sounds clear as a bell.
I do have a strange issue with my sound files though... I recorded an acoustic
in Paris. I converted the .paf to a .wav. I imported into Sonar... now
when I attempt to play along it is not the same tuning. It sounds like it's
tuned down a 1/2 note or more. Is that normal? I never converted .paf files
to place into other DAWs before and found that strange. Maybe something
else happened, I don't know, but the acoustic file is un-usable. No big
deal in this case... but I am hoping I don't have that problem alot. My
son (who lives many miles away) and I plan to exchange files to build songs...
but I guess converting them isn't a good idea... then, because of space,
we were planning to compress them to a .mp3 or something. Darn, this little
project may not work then....

If it's a 48 khz filetype, be sure the files isn't working as 44.1 khz in
Sonar.
A place in Sonar you can change the khz you wish to work with.
If you have converted some files for use in Sonar, be sure they will have
the same khz to work with, for both you and your son. It's normal the sound
will be slowed down as you're saying, when playing back a 48 khz fil as
44.1.

Don't give up on your project. This sounds like what would happen if a file
recorded in paf at 48KHz were converted to a wav @ 44.1

Nope, it isn't that. I stick strictly to 44.100 on everything. That is the
first thing I changed when I installed Sonar... and everything is set to
44.100 in Paris. As I said, not a big deal on this file, but I hope I don't
run into this in future files. I make sure everything (setting and project)
is set to 44.100. I don't use 48k... although I noticed a difference in
file size, I could never really hear anything sonically different. That's
just my opinion, so I am sure others believe differently. Anyway, thanks
for all your help...
I will comment that I am having a real learning curve with Sonar 7.0. I
mean, there is nothing easy in this program. One of the things that interested
me in getting this was the built in drum program... Well, the help viseo
calls it one thing and the help files don't know what it is... and if you
scour the forums, they have different names... I was just trying to figure
out how to setup and simple drum beat for something. HA! Unlike their video
that makes it looks so easy, I have absolutely zero sound when I am placing
markers for the beats... but I have sound if I arm the midi track and hit
play. I am not even sure how to ask anyone to help me on that one... It
took me hours just figuring out how to track a simple acoustic... the record
button is almost greyed out and doesn't turn red until you hit it... how
stupid is that? It little things like that which is making me more frustrated.
It's almost like a music program written and designed by programmers, not
musicians or engineers... Well, I'll keep playing with it... I'll like to
find some basic 101 or 102 for using this thing... the forums are a bit
over my head... I don't do sequencing and midi.. so I am left in the dark
on most conversations....
