It seems I need a new one. Well, I do need a new one because the last one
is half stuffed, regardless of whether that's what's stopping my system from
working, and I need the system to work, and soon.
Anybody got any good current ones, preferably something which will run an
Athlon 64 3000?

Make sure to use nVidia graphics card with that, since it's a nForce
chipset. Other recommends are shut down any ports (USB, serial,
parallel/LPT, network, onboard sound card) that you aren't going to use.
Stick to the recommended RAM list if you can. If not, go to www.crucial.com
and pick out what they recommend. Buy a matched pair as this MoBo is a Dual
Channel type - 1 GB is all you should need (2x512). Quality power supply.
Don't bother with overclocking. Don't use it for internet, and don't load a
bunch of MS Updates pertaining to security/internet, you'll use way less
system resources that way. WinXP Service Pack 1 is preferrable IMHO, but SP2
will work. And of course, point your browser to www.ensoniq.ca and buy all
the killer plugs. Be sure to set the path variable correctly for the new
plugs. Get Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image.
Get the system stable, do an image THEN add Paris to the equation. Install
it to C:\PARIS, not the default and you'll have less problems/things move
faster. Once it's all happy/together, do another separate system image.
But you probably already know all this....

Kerry, Aaron is right. His rundown is worth a WIKI.
I should learn to drive it myself really. I'm not sure Kerry wanted to be
wholly responsible for putting stuff in it. ;o)

Already got one. :o) I just hope that card isn't faulty and causing my current

Indeed, though it will double as a general purpose Linux box on dual boot,
so quite a few things will need to stay. LPT is always a prime candidate
for "OFF" these days though.

Well I've ordered 2 x 2GB. What I've ordered, including the 4GB bit, exactly
matches the specs crucial recommend, though they don't appear to speak in
brands, so I'm not sure there. If it's unstable I have a 1 x 512 pair from
my current setup to swap out though for fault finding.

With 5200+ under the hood I don't see the point anymore, and Paris ran fine
on my 300Mhz PII. ;o)

Nope. Only on the Linux boot. Windows is staying clean for Paris, though

Most of it. Never hurts to hear it again prior to an install, because there's
nothing more annoying than having to do it twice. ;o)

Oh, it's definitely going in. By "you're kidding", I meant "oh, you bet I'm
listening!" This is exactly the kind of detailed, specific stuff that's most
needed.
Yes, once people get over the hump of "what if I break it?" or "I'm no
expert" and just start boldly entering data directly into the Wiki
themselves, I'll breathe a little sigh of relief and start getting on to
about ten other things I have queued to do :D It's got lots of people
registered so I'm confident the interest's there, it's just a matter of
getting over the hump.

I agree. I mean we have a forum to argue about stuff if there's disagreement
or questions about what to put in, so there's no reason it can't be the prompt
for some solid discussion and sorting out of ideas. The snowball is at the
top of the mountain. :o)
