Thanks Chris...If it does actually work,what software and hardware is being
used? I am having a difficult time finding a good laptop without Vista
already being installed...they said it was a nightmare to uninstall
Vista.....

HI ,

Not sure what laptops you have been looking at so far. Having Intel chip set and TI firewire chip set are the biggest things to look for.
Most mainstream laptops especially budget ones use Ricoh or Via firewire chip sets.

It would only be a "nightmare" to uninstall Vista if the laptop makers had locked out the BIOs so that it only functioned in AHCI or Raid mode for the SATA controller.
Otherwise it would be just that you would need a XP SP2 OEM install disk with the Intel AHCI/RAID controller driver slipstreamed in to it.

If you want to go the Vista route I would recommend using either Vista business 32 or Business 64 edition for audio/video use.
Sense laptops only use 4 gigs of ram total you would be best of using Vista 32 business.
Using the 32bit version will also help with some driver and program support.

I can guarantee that the Vista systems you get from the mainstream manufacturers will be loaded down with 3rd party crap and all the bells and whistles turn on full.
You should check to make that the maker gives you a real OEM Vista Install disk not a custom one.
The custom ones will usually come with some of the junk software pre-installed.
So even if you wiped the drive and did an fresh install with that disk you may still end up with all that junk there.

Assuming you are using the right PC components then this is the audio software and hardware that i know works fine with 32 and 64 vista

Software -

Sonar 7 32
Sonar 7 64
Cubase 4 32
Cubase 4 64
Reaper
Native Instruments ( Current versions, not all the hardware stuff under 64)
All of the most recent Steinberg plug ins and instruments.
East west play Instruments
Vienna instruments
Probably some others just haven't tested em yet.

Hardware-
(these all work in 32 and 64 bit versions)
RME All HDSP and Fireface devices
MOTU PCI and Firewire
Lynx
UAD

(32 bit only)
Focusrite
Presonus
NI
Novation

The biggest gotcha on Vista 64 atm for the MIDI end of things is that MOTU are pretty much the only people making a USB midi device with 64bit driver support.

That's some great info Chris...I appreciate your insight. I am terrified of
Vista for many reasons...mostly my ignorance.I feel that Microsoft was just
getting XP to be pretty good....

I dislike Vista. Mostly I dislike how it manages folders for different file
types. Me, I like a certain layout for all my files and folders, ie, name,
size, type, modified, attrib. In Vista, if I copy pics from my camera or
..wav files or .mp3 files from a zip drive or CD to a folder in Vista is
creates crap like, genre, and 2,3,4,5 stars, and album, and artist, so on.
Also, the administrator pop ups are annoying as hell. I do not use Vista
for recording. Also, you need at least 1gig ram for Vista basis and 2 gig
for Vista premium just for the system to run at a decent speed.

Vista can be made to look and behave almost the same as XP.
The UAC (Security pop ups) can be set to a less aggressive mode.
It can be disabled all together if you did it on a fresh install with no programs installed yet.)

All OS's have required more and more ram. Vista like OSX handles ram very differently than older OS versions do.
Allot of what is loaded into memory to improve program launching, task switching and multitasking.
It is true that some of the functions are a bit bloated. This will hopefully be improved over time or in Windows 7. :)
