OK, are you relaxed? ;o)
Here's the plan.
We're all going to chill for a bit. I've had a few emails from a few people,
and I think we all acknowledge that the group has been lacking decorum as
well as On Topic posts.
So unfortunately I'm gonna get all moderator on you all. Later today the
groups will be renamed as discussed to make it clearer where you can and
cannot post certain things. This will hopefully clear any off topic debates
and tension from the main group at least. Furthermore, I plan to start deleting
or moving posts or threads for a short time as appropriate, and it's not
impossible that I will look, at least temporarily, at asking or forcing certain
people to refrain.
In a recent email with Chuck he commented to me that he never wanted to be
a moderator. I'm much the same, and I think the spirit of the group has always
been that we sort out our own issues amongst ourselves without a moderator.
I think this has worked well in creating a group of people who are open and
honest with each other, but recently we've struggled with a lot of this stuff.
I'm also half pondering creation of a Paris NG usage policy of some sort,
which gives a guide to decorum and approach which is expected. That's just
food for thought at the moment.
Right now however I just want to ask that everybody chill out. Resist that
temptation to post back your witty retort to whoever you thought was out
of line. Let it sit for a bit.
What's more important to me right now than anything is getting some positive
input into the group, and I think we have heard enough of the arguments for
a bit. So I'll ask you all, for a couple of days at least:
(*) If it's an argument, just let it go. I don't care if your comment is
arguably warranted. What's warranted more is some peace and harmony in the
group.

I like your thinking on this. I do want to say something (perhaps in my own
defense?), which is just that some of us might not be as angry or combative
as we sound. Like when DJ and/or Don and I get into something . . . I know
it gets noisy and sarcastic at times, but I think we just like to "rassle,"
test out our own points of view. I never hang on to it or take things
personally. I just like the unfiltered banter. :)

Sarah, that's the missing ingredient: a sense of humor! Laugh at
ourselves and we will be a whole lot happier. Truly, nothing is more
liberally larded with bitter sweet irony than human behavior.

Sarah,
I totally see what you're saying, and I'm not trying to stifle discussions
like that, though if they're OT they should be in the appropriate group mostly,
but if we can't talk about what we want, as well as nut things out, whatever
it be, then the world would be a lesser place.
But I do need to cater to:
(*) Those who are getting genuinely irritated, or worse.
(*) Those who don't like things too OT
What you're saying is, I think, a lot like Don often points out, that many
of us would get along much better if we were actually in a bar somewhere
chilling out face to face, than what we sometimes see here, and if they could
see your body language and see that you're relaxed and there's no need to
get worked up, it would all work much better. Genuine friendship requires
honesty though, so we have to find a balance between ensuring that a group
exists where things are mostly on topic, as well as ensuring that nobody
genuinely gets upset. A little playful prodding is fine, as is challenging
people's views, so long as everyone involved is taking it the right way,
and as long as it's not interrupting those who are here just to discuss music/technology,
which is kinda the point of the group.
And if things get out of hand it never hurts to get back to basics again.

I dunno, Bill, irony is a disconnect between the apparent or spoken state.
That is, a convention of Mormons being held in Vegas or Bangkok is ironic.
Sarcasm makes use of irony, so when I tell the half-wits at HP 'Enterprise
Support Logistics' that they certainly earned their name as I'm waiting for
a part 13.5 hours after initiating a service call on a machine with a four
hour response time service contract, that's being ironic. Irony is pretty
high level, subtle stuff.
In my experience when it comes to human behavior pointless tragedy and low
rent slapstick comedy really seem to have the central roles. But hey, I've
been up for 22 hours at this point so maybe my point of view is a bit skewed.

i agree; i don't think some here would use the names called if it were
a face to face meeting. even though we've been together for many
years the whole anonymity thing at times takes it to levels that would
never happen in a personal meeting.

Hope you get your part! You're right: there is plenty of good slapstick
out there.
The irony of which I spoke is the incongruity of behavior. When people
act in anger, grief, pity, hostility, covert hostility, they invariably
accomplish more harm than they attempt to counter, i.e. Bush's "war on
terror".
The irony of the solution becoming the problem. Only with great wisdom
can solutions be found that harm little, and wisdom is a scarce
commodity here on Earth.
Last night I watched Charlie Wilson's War. Get my point? Our CIA has an
uncanny tendency to help raise leaders to power who do more harm than
good, especially to the USA.
