Now that I've got my head wrapped around Totalmix (a big deal), I'm really
getting some pretty major satisfaction out of Cubase SX. Everything just
works and no matter how outside the box and "unnatural" I get with this, it
just sorta' sits back, gives me a smartass look and says "c'mon
asshole....is that all you've got?" Get yourself a MADI card if you want a
lot of I/O. I'm using a MADI, a Multiface and an AES32 and I've never been
happier......really. It's a downright enjoyable experience sitting down to
mix.My heart is no longer in my throat every time I boot up wondering if
some workaround I've had to employ is going to take the system down or
something.

The sheer functionality and flexibility of this program is such a breath of
fresh air and I think it sounds very very good. I'm not even using my tape
emulator a lot of the time now. You just have to learn how to gainstage it.
Paris will spoil you in this respect. We all know that, but it's not that
hard to get some major "PHAT" out of Cubase and the tools available to do
that and the way they can be implemented is like a dream come true. Things
like clicking on an external processor and having the program automatically
calculate and compensate for the latency is something I doubt I'll ever take
for granted. You do need an external mixer of some sort for real time
monitoring if you're using more than one RME audio card, but other than
that, it's sweet....and easy..........and fast......and powerful........and
stable.....blah blah........

I'm not trying to slag the Paris system. I'm still amazed by how ahead of
it's time it still is, but I can definitely recommend Cubase 4 with the
right hardware. Chris Ludwig really was a godsend when I was working out my
componentry/compaibility situation and what I've got here is more stable
than my Paris rig ever was.

Steinberg Houston interfaced via midi. Works great for Cubase. won't work
with any other app. I've also got a Frontier Alphatrack interfacing with my
slave computer. It's very cool as well.

DJ, I don't not being hard to get some Phatt ou of the Steingbergs (C4 & Nuendo).
It's way harder than say Paris & ProTools. Those 2 babies mix themselves.

Most of 06 and 07 I tracked and mixed in Nuendo or Pro Tools, summing out
to a Analog mixer (SoundCraft Ghost). While this a nice setup, Paris spoiled
me into having a dedicated DAW controller. So, for 08 my partner and I will
be looking into

-Tascam DM4800
-Digidesign C24(new)
-New Euphonix (new for 08).
I will be getting back to Paris in 08..I miss the sound. And, I will polish
up and really master Slow-Tools.

Hey LaMont,

Is there any real info about this stealth Euphonix product? Are you talking
about something they've officially announced or something they are going
to announce. There was the massive buzz and then . . . nothing. If it were
a 'C24 for native apps' I'd be all over it like stink on fish.

Just wondering if there's more info out there,

TCB

How is it for tracking?

That's the only potential rub, IMO, but it's not insurmountable. Using the
RME Totalmix allows very flexible cue mix options. It's just a diffrerent
way of working. If you want to use the Cubase Control Coom function, you
will need a computer and drivers capable of operating at very low latencies,
but those are available now as well.

For a cue system, I'm using a Furman HDS-16 system with 5 x HRM-16 remote
mixers here for zero latency monitoring in the tracking area. I also use an
external analog mixer in the control room. for zero latency monitoring of
the summing of the outputs RME HDSP cards during tracking sessions. I just
patch the headphone outs to a Mackie MixerMixer and sum these to a stereo
pair of line ins of a 1402 and then mute these and send them via Alt 3-4 to
the stereo mix inputs of the HDS-16 with the mains sent to a Coleman switch
box which is feeding my studio monitors. At that point I've got the zero
latency functionality of Paris.

You don't necessarily need to jump through all the hoops I'm doing here.
I've got a 3 x card system in one computer and then a second computer with
another 26 I/O feeding the first computer. If you were running a single card
system with a headphone output, you'd have it made.

I think John probably has a very slick HDSP 9652 based system. Neil is using
the Multiface as his primary I/O. If I were using that card for my main DAW,
I'd be looking hard at the respective kinds of setups they are using.
