| Paris Motherboards - So what's the fashion? [message #94086] |

I'm after something in brown. I've never been a fan of green PCB's...
....err...
So Mike is going with the Asrock AM2NF3-VSTA. I'm currently on the Gigabyte
K8NS Ultra which for me at least ran well for about a month before deteriorating
into multiple replacements and a general disdain for life and computerness.
The Asrock looks ok to me, and apparently I can use a dual processor now,
and I think I can actually get one here (thought they are rare it seems).
Just thought I'd fly the flag before a purchase. The credit card is pretty
much out and I'm hoping to have something ordered in the next 18 hours...
unless somebody tries defiantly to argue that my Paris system has something
else wrong with it...

Hi Kim.
I didn't know Paris could run on a dual processor. How So?
Anyway, My Paris comp mb (also K8NS ultra) died on me a couple of weeks back,
just before a session.
No sign of life at all. I had a second one in my Cubase comp,
which I was able to butcher and get up and running again with no hiccups.
I have since built a rockin' cubase box with one of the newer Gigabyte x2
boards and an x2 6000+. It has 4 pci slots, TI firewire etc.
Wonder if this would make a good paris box.
I'm a little nervous about not having a spare k8ns, so If you
successfuly retire yours, coul;d I stick my hand up and nab yours
for experimentation purposes? I have processors.
I'd like to see what you eventually use.

Makes me nervous too. I'm running two of these mobos, two similar ones died
last year and I've got one good backup. They are phenomenal performers with
UAD-1 cards and RME cards and I'm running Opteron 185's in mine, but I'm
hoping what I've got will last me until the x-scaling issues are sorted out
with the dual socket/quad core mobos and Steinberg software.
I've always got my eye peeled for another one of these boards, just in case.

Yep. Assuming I go ahead (about 80-90% at this stage) the old board is yours.
It's still booting and the rest. I'd be cautious about putting PCI cards
in it until I have checked that the EDS's still work, but we'll negotiate
that as I move forward testing.
I'll ship it to you with all the other stuff I have of yours... ;o)

I have taken mine back twice. Once it was replaced, the other time it was
"worked on".
The first one I got was really good for about 3-4 weeks. After that there
have been little tiny issues constantly. Nothing big enough to make me rip
it out, but every week or so I get some issue and go "I'm sure this MB is
no good..."

Hi Kim and others, I feel your KNS8 pain (2) deceased..However, like my late
dad always told me: "Buy Cheap, Buy again".. So, for now on, I only buy server
graded Motherboards ..
This is the board I'm using in all of my rack-mounted DAWS

Ya know, I'd almost go there.
What are the plugs behind the PCI slot which the EDS cards are potentially
going to interfere with? Looks suspiciously like the IDE plugs (I'm sure
it is) and something else. Do EDS cards fit without interrupting these or
do I need full SATA gear?
I already have two 250Gig SATA drives anyhow...
What Paris systems have you run with this board?
Given I really do see this as "the final" paris box, I would like it to just
be rock solid for 20 years, so the extra $70 to buy this one isn't really
relevant if it doubles the chance of a long trouble free lifespan.

Good questions: (2) Eide slots...4(sata 3.0) slots, even buit-in firewire
which is nice.
However, continue to follow the PCI rules that we've always followed with
EDS cards. All Slots will work if you have 4 cards, but you should disable
a few of the usb2 ports..
Plenty of room for the EDS cards and it does interfere with the IDE ribbon
cable(s)..
