Happy New Year everybody. it just may be the time to consider the new Mac
Pro
with 8 core processors. Apple is getting the store ready now.

A dual quad 3.2 with 16G of ram would pretty much rock the house... for only
about $6k if you buy ram
somewhere else.
Actually this is interesting - basically the same dual quad 3.2G system from
Dell, base config (2G ram), is more than Apple's (about $5300 vs. $4400 from
Apple - pretty big difference). That's with only an 80G system drive on the
Dell. Dude.... don't get a Dell.
Not that I ever buy from Dell, but I was curious how the Harpertowns were
pricing in general.

Yup, Dell really sucks. That's why where I work we have ~250k of them in our
server rack and that much again on our desktops and portables. 'Cause they
just suck, and we want to make our live miserable.
We were just pricing out a dual quad core 3.0 Ghz. With a perc controller
but no ram/drive upgrades we were a shade over $3600. This was a rack case,
though, which might be a little cheaper.

Yep. Neither sucks, but in this case it's nice to see Apple being price
competitive in high end performance workstations. Especially for those
who currently prefer OSX. Of course you could run other operating
systems on the Mac Pros if you like.
I wouldn't want to be in charge of 500k computers, though. Around here,
one or two is fine. :^)

Sorry Thad - didn't mean to imply anything wrong with Dell. My only
experience with a Dell was a low end "get what you pay for" consumer model
that was forced on me to make into a video editing system by budget makers,
rather than the IT pro. If one were looking for a $5000 desktop, the Mac
might be the better deal.... that's was the only point there. I could have
missed some extra cost with the Dell I priced, but it's a WinVista64 large
business model, with SATA, no raid(?) and a 256M Nvidia video card, no
monitor, keyboard, mouse, system drive.
Btw - checked out the CompUSA closeout sale here yesterday - really great
deals - after 3 weeks, you can get 20% of items that
were marked up 15% over normal selling price just for the sale!! yipeee!!
what a deal... right.... can't say I'm sorry to see them go.

Hi Dedric,
When you configure the Apple and Dell "Apples to Apples" the Dell is
over $800 more when configuring a Dell machine to match as much as
possible the default Apple configuration.
When you load out the machines to what you be a common audio setup
prices grow further apart.
Obviously buying the extra stuff from Apple and Dell will cost allot

Thanks Chris. My comps are in a machine room so noise isn't really a factor
as much as performance with Nuendo, then price.
Any tests on your end with Leopard vs. XP bootcamped? I've seen some Nuendo
users reporting being able to drop a level of latency (256 to 128) with
Leopard vs. the last furry animal version. Is core audio improving to be on
par with ASIO?

Hi Dedric,
Yes leopard dos seem to have improved things with low latency
performance over all.
Core Audio has always been close to ASIO in performance. Way better than
WDM or Wave RT on the Windows side. ASIO is still the best solution for
that anywhere in the near future on XP or even Vista.
About the only thing Core Audio hasn't got that ASIO does is direct
monitoring. But PCs and Macs at this point are so fast that isn't a big
deal sense machines are fast enough now to handle a decent load with sub
3ms latency.

That's why I'm lookng for a person to load Lepoard on my new Dell Inspiron.
This baby has the same specs as a Mac book Pro 2.6.
Then, I'll boot camp it. Run Nuendo oon XP and Logic Pro on Mac OS-X.
