Wow, big announcement from Synthogy at NAMM. Ilok now required!

http://www.synthogy.com/register/ilok_information.html

My first reaction is not positive. Why should I be excited by this?

I just got rid of a dongle for Logic, now I have to add one?

What does an iLok cost?

Dusting off NI's Akoustic Piano...

Cheers,
-Jamie

I hear you and feel your pain. I'm thinking I might need a 16 port USB hub
sometime this year - 4 just isn't going to cut it. Pretty ridiculous
really.

Btw - I believe iLok is $35. I'll have to buy 4 in a few weeks to upgrade
EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Platinum to the Play system (and run it on separate
systems, but at least now I can mix and match/move them at will without
having to deauthorize/reauthorize - assuming Play runs as well as
Kontakt...).

On the upside, VSL is rumored to have announced Vienna Instruments 3 with
cross platform midi and audio transfer built into the player so you can
simply connect Macs and/or PCs via ethernet and run sections on different
machines without midi or audio interfaces - that's really sweet (like having
FX Teleport and MidiOverLan built in). Downside, there again, multiple
Vienna USB keys.

These things are multiplying like rabbits....

I wonder if someone has created a virtual 'drive' that could be used for
these iLok things. Kind of like the no cd fix for games so you don't have to
keep looking for 'where did I put that darn CD at'.
Originally I was very much for iLok (even razzing Edmund from the go for
choosing Pace) but if you're seriously having to look at a 16 port USB hub
just to use what you have rightfully paid for the usage of, something is
really really wrong with this picture man.

I was half joking about 16 ports, but for sure, 4 isn't enough for my main
system (already has 4 on it, and more to come), and in truth, more than 8 on
one isn't unlikely, esp. with other USB devices (keyboard, x-keys, thumb
drives for small project/data transfers, etc).

You can combine iLok apps on a single key (up to 100 I think), but if you
want to split them to different machines, or you aren't comfortable (and
your insurance company isn't) with all of your software investment riding on
a single $35 piece of plastic, then that's out (and it pays to be sure the
developer supports iLok's backup system - some don't); then there are the
multiple formats - iLok, Syncrosoft, Wibu, and one I have that seems to be
none of the above.

I agree that it's better than Pace and probably a move in the right
direction and probably the best option for copy protection in general, other
than honesty, but it does seem silly in a lot of other ways.

Dedric... all your licenses don't reside on a $35 piece of
plastic with an EPROM inside it, they reside on the iLok
website!

That's how you can also move a license from one iLok to another.
It seems to be really easy to manage... I've only had to do it
once (port a license over from one key to another), but it was
pretty painless.

Believe me, it's WAY better than having multiple instances of
the PACE virus on your hard drive.

Neil - my keys don't. I don't have any with iLok yet (soon to come) - all
are Syncrosoft,
Wibu and a custom key.
