Who all is running Quad here?
I just loaded my new pc up with WinXP, SP1. From BIOS boot/disk insert to
Windows installed welcome screen took 16 minutes. Can a get a Fresh Prince
ShaLamm! Updates and whatnot's coming (it'll be on the net), but I'm looking
for what to expect in the way of latency, plugs and track counts. SATA 250GB
system and 400GB data, 2 GB RAM. This machine will be my 'everyday' box,
streaming movies, music and handling most of my song building. I'll mix
elsewhere, but this little dude is the workhorse for building/virtual synths
and schlepping video render stuff when I have time for that.
Has anyone noted a major change from single or dual core tech to Quad core
in regards to latency in native rigs?
Any great audio or video rendering benchmarks out there to try? Keep in
mind, I'm using onboard Intel Graphics 8 (yuk) MB shared, so I'm not trying
to test the video card, only rendering capability.

Hi Aaron,
If you want to get the most out of it then these will help.
Run SP2 especially if you gonna be using for internet stuff.
Don't install IE7 yuck!! In fact uninstall fricking IE and Out look and
install fire fox and thunder bird. But don't do that until you use IE6
to download em. :)
You will probably need to install dot net 1 and 2 but only need to
install 3 if you have any vista machine in your network.
These hot fixes are for multi-core Intel cpus.
Microsoft hot fix:
KB896256
Microsoft hot fix:
KB936357
Make sure you are using the newest BIOS and latest drivers for the
motherboard, especially the on board video.
Which on board video card chip does your motherboard have? 8 meg seems
way too low. Does it have hardwired memory and then shared past that?

Along this topic... what's the biggest bang for the buck right now for
MB and Chip?? Our Nuendo machine is in need of an upgrade....

David - Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield with a socket 975 Intel board.
I have an Asus P5W DH Deluxe board that's a good board (esp. for multiple
PCI and PCIe slots.
(Gigabyte may be another good choice).
I heard the Core 2 Quads were on sale for as low as $199 recently - down to
$250 on newegg.com.

Very cool. Since I will use the box for IT, net surfing, audio and video I
just loaded everything from MS Updates. The box still idles at (gulp) 0% CPU
usage and about 300~350 MB of Ram usage. I'll check that these two KB fixes
were on that list - thank you for the great tip there

Yes, it has the newest revision on it.

I think you hit it on the head. it has two numbers listed in the BIOS, one
is 8 MB (this must be the Intel chip onboard memory) and another selectable
option at 128 and 256 MB I believe it was, that is the 'shared' section....
I'll double check that. Vid res on the dual outs will hit 1280 x 1024 so
far.. haven't pushed anything past that as it's auto detecting my 19"
screens.

well, I took a different approach than I usually would and bought a mini
chassis Shuttle - the SG31-G2. PCi-E and PCi slot, one of each. I'll use a
FW audio card (TI chipset, 2 ports!) and the video is built in. I've seen
the Q6600 for about $250 in several places and I'm completely impressed so
far with that performance. I've been spanking it like a cheap rented donkey
all day, multi tasking it's little butt off and I've managed to push it up
to 50% CPU so far (stuff like downloading MS updates, installing Anti
Spyware and doing a A/V scan while surfing the web and moving files across a
network all at the same time). I'm not sure how Nuendo's multi core support
is, so I'm not sure what kind of bump you'll see though.
If it helps, the whole thing inclusive of RAM, CPU, bare bones, 2 HDDs and
DVD-9 lightscribe drive ran me right about $700 US. I overpaid on the CPU by
about $50 but I wanted it from a local vendor and I wanted it now. I'd
supposed this super quiet little box would work well with a Magma PCI-e, but
I couldn't verify that - if that's how your Nuendo is indeed set up.

I'm pretty sure mine's a LGA775 here, so I wanted to check that I may have
missed something or it's a typo?
- Always had good luck with Asus and Gigabyte either one FWIW.

Yikes, yep typo on my part - sorry about that: it is LGA775, not 975.

Hi Dedric,
LGA775 is the socket type. 975 is the chipset.

HI Aaron,
If you want to be able to use the 1333fsb based chips which are the
current ones then you will need a P35 or X38 chipset based motherboard.
Check out the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P (rev. 2.0) Intel DP35DP

Great motherboard.
I use 2... One with a dual core and 2mb ram and another (in the studio) with
a quad core and 4gb ram...

Cool. Haven't used any of the Shuttle boxes in a long time but they used
to be great. I still run an old 875 chipset one and it has always been
solid.
You will seen a good jump in power for Nuendo. It works fine with the 4
core and will use them all. It is just not totally optimized for them.

Got into a quad core about a month ago: Q6600, GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775
Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard, 2 gig of kingston RAM DDR2 800. I've been
running Reaper. Current project is 40 tracks, 110 plugs, cpu is hitting about
40% with a buffer of 256 -delta 1010LT. XP with SP2, pretty well tweaked
out. The power is certainly not limitless, but dang its been a freak show
with plugs. Lots-o-fun.

I transplanted my EMU0404 to the machine tonight, and fired a native
app/native synths at it. Geez..... I'm not quite sure yet with how I work
I'm gonna be able to top this thing out. Keeping in mind, I use this box for
everything, and I've got 'everything' loaded up on it (included a full blown
office 2007 setup, A/V, antispy, etc....) as a result.And I haven't even
done the OS tweaking yet.
Ain't tech grand? Finally I feel the promise of daily art (w/o the system
choking) I'd hoped for some years back when the 'restless got native'.
Deej is gonna HAVE to get a quad or he'll....... you know........

Sheesh, I can't shut up about it. I'm really blown away -high track counts
and really no big worries about tossin' in the plugs. Last night, we had
a freeamp 3 feeding a couple of distortion plugs a compressor and then another
freeamp 3 and then routed that channel to two subs, one with a verb and the
other with a dual delay. I spent about 700 for the pieces parts. Can't
believe the bang for the buck. At least for me in my little tiny world ITB
has definately arrived.

What audio card/latency are you seeing? On the 0404 I've got it dead stable
at 5 mS, and I'll probably try to push it a little more down the road.

Current project is at 258 which is 6ms of latency -40 tracks, 100FX (combination
of vst's and vsti's). 44.1/24bit. I'm ok with 6ms so I haven't played around
with lower latencies. I'll have to experiment a little and post back. Paris
is still the bomb, but being able to mess with all these vsti's -all in one
box, has been great. I could get similar results from Paris, but I needed
to sync up at least two computers, sometimes three, to make it happen. Now,
one project, one box. Cool.

anybody test quad core performance with VSTi's with DSD softsamplers like
the grand or East West Play ?I'm curious because play chokes the shit out
of the opteron machine.5 streams and its breathing heavy.
I guess the convolution reverbs have more to do with it than streaming.

The EMU 0404 sound card comes with a set of software playback streaming
samplers called Emulator X and Proteus X.... and they both are slammin fast.
I haven't done any real hardcore testing with them but preliminaries are
that it smokes anything else i've seen. Those were bordering on worthless in
the previous system, an AMD64 single core 2800+ with a Gig of RAM. What I
have found is that the CPU cores far and away outrun the hard disk in video
rendering, using a 400GB seagate SATA. HDD is defintely the choke point for
that work.

Hey Chris
Regarding the hotfixes, MS reports that the hotfixes fix problems that are
"uncommon" -I believe that was the word used. Are you finding that generally
the hotfixes make a overall improvement in MOST mulitcore (intel) systems?
Just feeling alittle hinkey about making changes to my registery.
