Laptop advice? [message #97969]

What would be a good Windows based Laptop to purchase? What kind of
ports,etc do you want to have for portable recording? I was thinking of
using Nuendo,and Wavelab....Also advice on a good ,interface maybe around
$500..? .Too bad you can't run PARIS on a laptop..

Intel CPU/chip set
Texas instruments firewire chip set

Are the biggest things to look for.
You want to avoid ones that use a Ricoh firewire/cardbus combo controller.
Which most of the cheap ones.

Well, actually there are many choices for laptops... just got a nice Acer
from Walmart for the wife. But I think you would need to consider what software
you are going to use and what interface. There are too many choices to list.
I would suggest to stick with firewire and if you are going to use a notebook,
purchase a cardbus-type firewire... don't use an internal firewire connection.
I witnessed and heard too many horror stories of noises and issues... it
is best to use an external firewire and be sure it has it's own power source...

Mostly what Chris said, but a few caveats. I still think it's worth it to
go with a 'real' video card with its own memory. Shared memory isn't the
horrible penalty it once was but just anecdotally laptops with real video
memory seem both snappier with audio and more stable.

For the interface I'd go USB. I don't like the non-cardbus options (and you'll
likely be getting a non-cardbus laptop) and people seem to have the devil's
problems getting fw interface to work with laptops. I have a $300 M-Audio
USB interface and it works great. Ditto my fancy Native Instruments DJ interface.

You need to be more diligent with laptops on the backup and security front.
Your locked front door adds a level of security to your desktop that you
won't have with a portable. Be more careful about private data and think
about some amount of disk encryption and maybe password protected VMs for
checking email and surfing.

I bought a fancy Dell a few months ago. After getting it seriously tricked
out (17" screen, tons o' ram, etc.) it was around $1100. You can cut a few
corners and get in for less.

Thanks guys...that does help..At least that gives me a "heads up" on some
important features.. Get a real video card...Get an Intel chip..Max RAM....I
am on the fence concerning Firewire vs USB 2.0. I have had success,and
failures with both...
