Hey, Mike
I was reading one of your posts awhile back that you are using Paris on an
AsRock AM2NF3-VSTA Motherboard with 5 PCI slot running XP, and I was wondering
how is it working out. I believe you are also using windows 98 as well.
(1) I am curious as to what you are running in XP? And also, (2) curious
as to what you are running in 98? Right now I’m still using Paris in Windows
98, but I would like a box with XP. My setup is a Pentium Intel 3 Processor
with 256 MB of ram with 5 PCI slots. The five PCI slot on the AsRock is
a plus, because I have 4 cards, so I’m considering this motherboard. (3)
Is this board still available? If so, where? If you don’t mind could you
give me the rundown of all the hardware, program, and memory that you are
using with this board? It would defiantly be appreciated.
This may be a stupid question considering all the new plug-ins you have created,
but here goes: Did you build your own computer? Man! that was a scary moment.

Hi Terry,
My current franken-puter is one that I am most proud of. I wanted a modern
PC that could run Windows 98 and Windows XP with PARIS. The AM2NF3 was the
only AM2 board I could find that looked like it would do the trick, but it
explicitly said that it didn't support Windows 98.
I bought it anyway, and made it work.
I use Windows 98 for testing plugins and using the ADAT card with my LX 20.
I use XP for everything else.
Things to note about the AM2NF3:
The ide cables are in the way of full length PCI cards on all but the bottom
2 slots. I use a magma, so it doesn't affect me. IDE cables that have low
profile connectors may alleviate this, I don't know.
Windows 98 will not work with Nvidia agp cards on this board. I don't know
why. I tried everything I could think of to get a 6200 and a 6800 to work
without any success. I've got a G550 working fine right now. My G400 worked,
too.
You have to disable the built in audio under windows 98. There are no drivers
for it.
Getting 98 into safe mode requires a trick when you've got more than 1GB
or ram. you have to add a line to the system.sb file, I think.
IDE drives bigger that 120 GB require a third party driver. I'd have to
look up his site. Rudolph Lowe, I believe.
SATA drives bigger than 120 GB will not work in Windows 98 no matter what.
I had to disable the port in the 98 driver to get it to ignore the larger
drive.
You need to scavenge the USB 98 drivers from other MB makers. I can send
you these if you need them.
You need to limit the RAM available in Windows 98 using MSConfig to 512 MB
or all hell breaks loose.
As for availability, it's been discontinued. I've been keeping my eyes on
ebay for a spare in case mine dies. I got my first one by ordering it from
a British website. It was never sold in North America. The shipping cost
sucked.

Hey Mike! Thanks for responding.
I guess its' back to the internet to find a motherboard to work with Paris,
because i defiantly need to upgrade. Right now I'm working on a project with
40 tracks, and if I try to play them simultaneously it will freeze with this
warning "The data could not be read fast enough from disk. Use a faster drive".
I have tried ajusting the Disk I/O size and the Disk Cache size and nothing
changes. So If I want to listen to Sub-1 and Sub-2, I would have to pull
Sub-3 from the playing field and put it in an object jail, until I can do
a mixdown of either Sub-1 or Sub-2. It takes a little longer but it works.
If by chance you come across a motherboard that would work let me know or
if you have a solution to my problem let me know that as well.

If I might suggest, I personally saw Brian T stream a lot more tracks than
that from an old Win ME AMD Athlon system. Might be worth trying to reach
him in Houston for a little consulting advice before you dump your system.

Hi Terry,
You may just need a newer hard drive. Good luck with whatever you decide
to do. You could always start with a new hard driver, and upgrade from there
if you need to.

I still plan on keeping windows 98, I want another box with XP " to see if
the grass is greener on the other side.

Hi Terry,
I'd keep 98/Me if you can and dual boot. Some have said that the sound in
98 is different. I've just noticed that the XP driver is a bit temperamental.
Also, XP disk caching is a pain in the ass if you don't have more than a
GB of ram (1.5 GB plus). Just for your own flexibility for getting around
any XP issues when you need to, I hope you'll keep 98.
