Hi there,
I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction for troubleshooting
an installation problem. I've recently put a new 8-in an 8-out card into
my MEC, and when I run Paris, they don't show up on the patch bay and I can't
seem to use them. I'm wondering if there are steps that I am missing here.
I've looked in the manual and can't find any notes on installing these things
into an existing MEC. So I'm a little bit lost. Any help would be appreciated.

In theory they should just show up in the modules section in
the patchbay. Does the Mec master module show up that these
new 8 in/outs are installed in?

Hi guys,
Thanks for trying to help. Here is some more information that I should have
included earlier. I am running Paris 3.0 on Windows ME with three EDS cards
installed. My MEC is connected to the first EDS card and that's it. When
I run Paris, only 16 ins and outs show up in the modules section of the patch
bay. What do you think?

OOohhhh.. ok. This is a limit. You have to select which modules from the
itemized lists in the patch bay on the right hand side. Adat, no matter
where in the MEC, will be the first default as I recall. I think this has to
do with how Paris does it's hardware inventory. Make sure to scroll on that
list, if they aren't there then you have a problem. If they are, that is
normal Paris behaviour.

To clarify, you can only have 2 input and 2 output modules per MEC, giving
you 16 ins and 16 outs for each Paris submixer.

I'm not sure I understand.
In the itemized list in the patch bay on the right hand side, I only see
"Modules A" which only shows 16 ins and 16 outs.
Do you mean to say that each MEC can only run up to two input and output
modules? If that's the case, then why in the world does the MEC have 9 expansion
slots? Am I going to have to run a whole extra 4-rack-unit MEC just to use
my extra modules? Or is there a more efficient workaround that I don't know
about here? Or am I misunderstanding this completely?
Somebody help explain this to me.

Drag'n'drop as you need. Yes, only 2 MEC in modules and 2 MEC out add on
modules at a a time. think about it though, you have only 16 channels per
submix, right?
You can use additional inputs (8 to be exact) to feed auxes/External loops
on channels though you cannot of course record those. That gives you the
total of 24 streams of I/O PER CARD. No more. If you need more you need
another MEC and another EDS card to host that MEC.

Aaron is quite correct... only 4 cards "live" at one time. Why have 9
slots? Choice. You could have 16 channels worth of analog I/O and 16
channels worth of adat I/O for 8 cards, and the SMPTE card, which makes
9. This would give you the option of having all 16 I/O digital, or
analog, or a mix.

Thanks for explaining this to me guys. I kind of see the logic, but I guess
I just took for granted that the hardware pairings would be more flexible,
and I never found anything specifically telling me differently. For my situation
(3 EDS cards, one MEC), it just seems like a waste of space and hardware.
Oh well, I guess I'm dragging my spare MEC out of storage.

Just FYI.. be also aware that adding a 2nd MEC will be fine sans external
clock, but a 3rd will require you buy a word clock. Also, the 2nd MEC may
want to live on EDS 2 or EDS 3. It's *generally* the last one, in your case
#3, but not always.
Make sure to use a quality word clock cable from the 1st MEC to the 2nd MEC.

FYI,
I'm sitting with a six card system with MEcs on cards 1 and 2.
Surprisingly no problems and multipl ADATs on the MECs. I am using a
word clock even though it probably isn't necssary in this config.

Here's a question. If I swapped out my third 8-in and 8-out cards with ADAT
cards, would I be able to run 24-track recording off of one MEC, patching
the extra inputs to the mixer module of one of my extra EDS cards. Does
this make sense? I'm interested to know if this is a potential work-around
for my situation. Those MECs sure do take up a lot of space.

No, you can not cross card boundaries with I/O. This means you can only
record a maximum of 16 channels per MEC / Card / Submix combo at one
time... regardless of the number of EDS cards you have, or I/O cards you
have in your MEC.
