Senior Member

I know I asked this before, but what is the preferred software gate among
those in the know? I'm finally mixing Monkiedrums and there's a lot of trash
in there that I'd prefer not to edit out, so some kind of gentle gate seems
to be the best option. Opinions requested.

I hardly ever use a gate since mixing all in the box. I just cut out or
automate levels of the tracks/sections I want to drop. I know it's more
work, but I don't trust gates that much. Does the Cubase gate work OK?

I really like the Paris gates. If you're not using paris, I would check out
the analog x gates...free. I use them all the time for rendering tracks to
send to people. Sinus Golden Gate has worked good for me also. The Sonalksis
analog gates are supposed to be great also, although my experience with them
is limited. I like using gates because I like to let a little bleed happen,
and all the gates I listed let you do that. I've tried automation, but I
can hear it. I can hear the faders ramp up a split second before the event
occurs. Maybe I'm crazy.

do all of that editing. Lazy lazy lazy.

I know you're not a Waves fan, but if you've still got it on your
system, the RVOX plugin is pretty cool.
Without compression, I use it as a soft gate.
The bonus is that if you can add some fat, and still have the rejection.
Works for me.... two knobs, kinda like an over-easy with an
expander before the compressor.

Expanders do a better job by far IMO. Gates are way too hard, unless you
actually do want that Phil Collins 80's drum sound. Totally pulling the
bleed nixes the vibe of a real kit, IMO.

i like the paris gate best but just about any other will do the
job...logic's gate ain't bad but not as smooth. i mostly use it on
the toms.

I've been using Floorfish, and it works. It can also function as an
expander (I usually start with the Floor Tom Expander preset). In any
case, it's pretty flexible. And free!
