Hi All,
The metronome is done!!!
Heartbeat allows for 5 tempo and time signature ranges. It produces a very
short, cross-faded sign wave that is so short that it sounds like a click.
The frequency of the tone is selectable via the "Tone" knob. The "Bar"
and "Beat" knobs show the current bar and beat of the project. The "Offset"
knob allows adjusting the metronome so that it is in synch with a MIDI sequencer
that might be slightly delayed due to driver latency.
Available at ensoniq.ca

I got some more info up on the Wiki about your plugs, but I'm snowed under
with three overlapping project deliveries right now. So if anyone wants to
take a poke at updating more of the plugin listings for Mike's plugins,
listed at http://www.ensoniq.ca , they're linked at:

The editing/adding process is extremely fast and simple -
1) log in the Wiki
2) go to http://www.kerrygalloway.com/WikiPARIS/wikka.php?wakka=MikeA udet
3) click on any entry with a dashed underline - it means there's no page
there yet.
4) The Wiki does the heavy lifting; it will create a page editor, and once
you've added your input and hit "store" it automatically creates a page with
your entry.
5) use this as a "cut and paste" template for additional plugin pages to
save time -

rather than wasting time creating a new entry from scratch, double click on
that page, copy, paste to the new plugin page you're working on and change

"Bugs/Peculiarities" or "Suggested Applications" entries unless you want to

I just managed to compile the Paris Studio Control Library, and I filled
the ADAT cpp file with debug code. I make no promises, but I hope to fix
it.

That's what I'm after. :)
I did a ton of debugging last night, and I'm almost positive that I tracked
it down to a timing problem in adat.dll. adat.dll was never updated as part
of the update to the PSCL that was released with the driver. Also, it returns
error code 7, which means that something timed out while it was waiting for
the module to respond - it probably didn't wait long enough. let's hope
that's all it is.

Given what I've seen and learned about Paris in the last decade, I'd say you
probably hit it right on the head. I was told years ago that it was a timing
bug that Ensoniq had timed the hardware searches off the CPU clock, and due
to the huge change since then in that as a clock 'standard' (IE, pentium 200
vs pentium IIII/IV) for said searches it had to have a loop placed in it to
allow things to be found w/o timing out the initialization of the hardware.
This was the explanation given for why does XP take SO long to boot in
comparison to opening Paris in aWinME/98.

I'm bringing a DVD with the entire virtual MAC to a friend's house sometime
next week. With any luck, he'll be able to help me compile the plugs. It's
beyond me.
As for the 24 bits, I'd almost bet anything that assuming the chips respond
to the same commands in the same way, switching them would allow 24 bits
to pass. The driver code I'm working with is at a higher level. If there
was a software solution, I think it would be at the firmware level, which
I don't have.
What chips are they? I'd give it a try.

Are the EPROMS in sockets, or soldered to the boards?
That strikes me as pretty close to a "must have" upgrade, and if your
speculation turns out to be correct, it sounds to me like some enterprising
PARIS user with electronic skills might be able to make some side money
upgrading ADAT cards for we of lesser skills.

I know my buddy who has fixed three Mecs with a smoked chip
will do the same for the ADAT cards if the proper chip is found.

I haven't looked at the Adat card in sometime, but I think it's a socket.
My thinking was, If you could pop in the 24bit version of the Alesis chip
and you could get the PARIS software to recognize the 24bits, that would
be vary cool. Add in latency compensation and a second comp for effect processing
and...

I put a little research time in today looking for choices for an upgrade of
that chip and drew a blank. Got any leads? This is an extremely interesting
development, I'd gamble a few bucks on being a guinea-pig.

I could be wrong, but I thought in the past it was discussed that the
software has nothing to do with the bitrate, other than switching 16 or 24
bit capture? IIRC, that was discovered when the project to make AES modules
out of IF2's was being pursued.

That makes sense. If the ADAT card and the .dll passed 24 bits OK, what
could the PARIS app have to complain about? It'd make sense for it to just
see it as another 24-bit input, like one coming off an 8i card.

Kerry, this was a custom Alesis Adat chip. The first step would be to contact
Alesis and inquire about buying a later version of the chip that was designed
for 24bit. They use to have an OEM partner department for all the ADAT partners.
I'm sure they still do licensing and sell OEM parts. There may be somebody
still around that worked with Ensoniq when they supplied them with the chip.
It's going to be a long shot, but it's worth a try. Maybe they can look
the chip up and tell you what the last version on that chip was and give
you a spec sheet or technical white paper on it. The newer replacement chip
might be used in products like AI1-4, the Masterlink, or the Adat HD24.
FYI, I think you will get farther if you approach them as a company, than
as an individual.

Wait a second - hang on - Paris doesn't have a 20 bit option, just 16 and
24, and if I remember correctly in 24-bit mode it simply records the 20 bits
passed by the chip and pads the extra bits out to 24 with zeros. Seems to
logically imply that since it *already believes* the ADAT chip's passing it
24 bits, it's ready to catch 24 if the chip pitches 24 at it. Hmmm.
