Hi all, I was asked about purchasing a couple of mics that will hang from
a ceiling in church for the purpose of capturing the choirs performance.

For pro level recording, DPA's are really good for
this.

Not cheap. How fancy are you wanting to get?

They guy who does the classical recording for the Yale school of music has
the main performance hall wired up with probably 8-10 pairs of small capsule
condensers he uses in various combinations depending on the source. Schoeps
and DPA are the most popular brands, though I suspect you could get 95% of
the performance for a lot less money with Earthworks and others.

Get the Omni if you want natural lows with those.

Another option in that price range is the Countryman
"Choir Mics". They sound really good for the price, and
are likely better than the Shure's.

Hmmm, high quality, tight budget; I found a pair of Oktava MK-319s with the
Mike Joly mods - flat top with premium electronics

$300 for the pair on Craigslist. I haven't put them through their paces yet,
but my friend got a pair of MK-219s with the premium mod in the same
transaction at the same price and he says he's absolutely floored, they're
now his top mics. I'll let you know how mine work out.
