| Hi guys... been a while - CS16 Cable Question [message #102511] |

Hey there everyone,
Haven't been around here much lately - in fact I see by a quick search that
I've been more or less absent for just under 4 years. My second son (Orlando)
is also just under 4 years old, so maybe there's some connection there, but
I think it was more that this group was too damned good. I learned a hell
of a lot about audio here through the frequent dialoges, discussions and
even arguments..even learned a lot about human nature when things turned
into the odd political stoush. Anyway, as this group is the only place I
really learned about the ins and outs of audio, I kinda look at this group
as where I 'went to school. After a few years (I'm a bit slow, you know :-)
I realized that, entertaining and informative as it all was, I really needed
to tear myself away and spend more time doing the things I really needed
to be doing, so I did the only thing a person can do when they realize they
have a problem of addiction - I went cold turkey.
A lot has happened since then - I finally finished my contract for festival/mushroom
(which I was very glad to be rid of - I think the feeling was mutual). Then
I made a feature documentary for Walking with Dinosaurs; the Live Experience
(pretty much single handedly - I was the crew). Some of you guys might have
seen it over in the US. PBS were playing it a lot last August when the show
was in town. I now work for a 3D company called Inition doing stereoscopic
film production, 3D scanning, Motion Capture and Reality Augmentation. My
in-laws farm burned last weekend in the fires up at Whittlesea (luckily their
actual house was saved - can't say the same for the neigbours though - their
house burned to the ground <along with so many others>, but they escaped
with their lives).
So in short, a lot has been happening and none of it particularly audio related.
So I'm downsizing - getting rid of my PARIS, or I will be, as soon as I can
find my CS16 cable. I think I might have to buy a replacement before I can
put it all up for sale. I have a vague recollection of people blowing up
their cs16's by plugging in any old ethernet cable - can anyone remember
what the specs are for the cable - is it C5 twisted pair? or something like
that? Can't remember.
Anyway, I see you guys are still going strong - rock on! Here's a couple
of songs I did a while back that some of you guys might be interested in.

Standard CAT5, CAT5e or CAT6 RJ45 network cable should work fine. That's
straight pin to pin wired. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TIA/EIA-568-B
What you do NOT want is a crossover cable. That lets the smoke right out of
the electronics. The difference in the two types is how it's wired from end

Heya Markus! I remember you from the old days - nice to see you!
There have been lots of significant changes in the last year alone - this
has been one of the most active years for PARIS since before you left when
the XP drivers were hitting.
Before you do blow out your PARIS rig for peanuts, take a quick browse at
this shortlist of developments in case it raises your interest level - (

BIG kudos to Mike Audet for his coding - every time he digs into the code he
discovers more about the way PARIS thinks, and this means that advances
previously thought impossible are within reach, and in fact are happening
every quarter. Every day I spend at least an hour on PARIS development work
myself (I'm in a multi-step web project for it that's finally drawing within
reach of the finish line this week). And the PARIS community now has its own
separate group (IDEA.emuensoniqparis-general) for potentially contentious
off-topic discussion.
Welcome back - if you're not in a tearing rush to get that rig out the door,
take a look around first... And if it's going out the door to a new PARIS
user, send them on by for setup help.

Hey Aaron
Thanks for the info. I was up in the attic looking for something else today
and stumbled across it. It's all good.
Hey Kerry
Thanks for the info on what's been going on around here. It definitely looks
exciting. I think PARIS is great for recording real live musicians, but I
don't really do that anymore - I'm more MIDI / samples / synth based, and
will be for the forseeable future.
Thanks for the insight anyway.
Now I just gotta get all the software together.
