Back into Paris...what's new? [message #103728]

Wow, nice to see that there's still an active Paris community.

I'm entering the final touches for getting my studio together, and was wondering what I was going to do about a DAW. I figured Paris was totally dead (my hardware still works, but it's a 6+ year old computer). I debated moving to SSL's soundscape. But then I found this group (again).

So, what does it take to get Paris going again? My current setup is 2xEDS & a UAD-1 (which I could replace with one of their newer units if push comes to shove). What mobo's have PCI slots that work with paris? Do I need to get an expansion chassis (kindof a bummer considering how bulky the MEC is already)?

Are there any hardware guides?

What else is new (other than the multi-core drivers)?

Does SSL Duende work with Paris (PC)?

Does UAD-2 Work with Paris?

How about the Waves SSL Plugins?

As far as the plugin questions go, I asked about the Waves plugins last fall and someone said they were using up to Vs4. UAD 2 should be OK on XP, just need PCI -PCIe adaptors. Last week we got the Focusrite Liquid Mix working fine with the exception that "render to disc with Native plugins" choked on the firewire bus. We have not yet explored other firewire card configs, so if you're looking at purchasing Duende, you might want to go the PCIe route (with adaptor). If you already have the firewire box, then you may not be able to do the render thing. For me though, the render option is not relevant if running Paris on a new fast XP based box, since the render function was designed 10 years ago to save CPU.

I'm so out of touch with what hardware is out there. I didn't know about the LiquidMix (I'll have to look into that...how's the latency BTW?). I'm excited to think that new life can be breathed into the Paris platform, and that I won't have to spend another $6K or so to get back into recording (I'd much rather put that cash into gear).

I found on Newegg.com's site that you can select # of PCI slots as a motherboard selection criteria. Still a few mobo's out there with 3 old style PCI slots. I'm not sure if there's something particular the the EDS cards need though, other than the old PCI form factor.

With the right mobo, PCI-PCIe adapters 'should' be unnecessary for the UAD-2 since you can put a PCI-1X card in a PCI-1,4,8 or 16 slot.

I'm glad to see that a Magma chassis doesn't appear necessary...

One more quick question. Does Paris 3.0 work on XP64 bit?

I just installed 2 EDS cards and 2 UAD cards on a Asus P5B board with an E9400 (???) quad core processor mounted in a Rackmount server case with two fans

Took very little effort to get everything working and to date I have had no issues with the system.

Hi Don,

Are you running UAD-1, or UAD-2? Also, what VSTwrapper (I assume these are still necessary). I think I still have the FXpansion wrapper somewhere. Is there anything newer, and better out there?

Hey Kris

I'm running two UAD-1e Express Pak cards fully loaded.

I'm using fxpansion's wrapper as well as FFX4 chainer...seems to work nicely except for the God-Awful looking GUI but that's really nothing more than a visual issue.

I tried the Xlutop chainer (which has both stereo and mono functions) suggested by Erling but found it crashed PARIS so I went back to FFX4

Heya Kris - welcome to the forums!

Hmm... lemme see. new... That'd depend on when you last checked in, but there's been *quite* a lot going on in the last year.

- On XP, Mike Audet has a pretty comprehensive range of new plugs - grand total of five new reverbs (the DP series stuff is stellar), six new dynamics plugs, a metronome and an amp sim.

- You know about the new multicore drivers for XP - basically the field is wide open in terms of new computers, as long as they have enough free PCI slots or you use a chassis. The drivers kill a *lot* of old bugs, including the IRQ dance and the "multi ADAT card under XP" bug.

- Mike's got work well under way on the ASIO drivers; I have little doubt we'll be hearing from him shortly with a progress report.

- VirtuaVia chassis have been tested with PARIS and given the "thumbs up"; they're pretty exciting because they're a cheaper and simpler solution than Magma. We've got some folks who have been using them for six months now with no problems.

- We made contact with the Reaper guys again, and they quickly coded us direct PAF support - meaning track in PARIS and immediately open the same audio in Reaper. Better workflow for, say, drum editing.

- There's a swack of great new "skins" for PARIS, contributed by Mike Yanoska and Jim Drago, including a brushed aluminium and a "Neve".

- As far as web stuff, there are these forums, a blog, and of course the Wiki. There's a chat screen linked at the top too.

- Some big news recently: ID has relaunched itself in pro audio with a new website and a range of plugins, some very cool. Edmund's already asked if they could link the forum and Wiki from the PARIS support page.

I'm sure I've forgotten some stuff, but basically this past year has seen a staggering increase in potential system configurations which has future-proofed PARIS for years to come. And this coming year's shaping up nicely too. Welcome back!

PS: are you "Kris" as in "Kris in the Lower Mainland"? If so, double welcome back!
