Hey guys, I've got a friend (not me:) who is setting up a room to cut vocals
in his home. He is doing work which is consistently being released. Currently,
he has a Protools setup with MBox...great mic's, decent pre's, but is looking
for an 8 channel mixer (maybe smaller?) to address monitor levels within
the room. He only cuts vocals, so channels can be minimized.

Any suggestions?

Tyrone

you didnt' specificy budget, or tone centered. I just bought myself such =
mixer for keys/sequence/writing, and I expect to have it in a week or so =
in my hands, if he wants an eval and can wait. Here's what I ordered, at =
a blow out digital mixer price of $300.=20

Yes, it's $300. Feature set is crazy at $300. It probably has (by =
professional standards)crap preamps in it, but I'm using it mostly to =
monitor and input keyboards anyway, so my needs may differ a little from =
his. Most negative I could find about it was that the mixer is a bit =
noisy. Having the unit analyze and correct the room is a biggie for my =
laptop rig, even if it's half baked it beats not at all. throw in COSM =
and mid band sweep+ Q capability per channel and I was in. If your dude =
has his pre/mic combo already wrapped up into PT, this might be a real =
sweet entry ticket for him.

Hey AA, how are you man? Thanks for the heads up. Price is no biggie. This
looks pretty cool...especially sweet @ that price point. You mentioned that
it is a bit noisy. I'm assuming you know that from past experience...how
much so? I will pass this along to him.

How's Wayman making out? You still doing work with him? Glad to be in touch
man.

No, i have not heard it... yet..... I'm basing that statement off the
reviews I've seen on it. Since it's just basically monitoring for dude, he
probably won't care if it hisses a little, but thought it worth a mention.
If he's in no hurry, I'll have it next week more than likely and I'll be
running it through it's paces.
Haven't talked to wayman in a bit, last I heard he was gearing up for an old
skool funk record, I think he said George Duke was coming down to cut tracks
or something.

If he is looking for something with decent mic pres and over all reasonable
quality.

A mini Ghost with the 4 band EQ.

If he's looking for control room control (sorry to be redundant and to repeat
myself) Coleman Audio makes some great stuff. I use their TB-4 for source/speaker
switching & CR level. It also has cue mix/talkback function. Not cheap
but bullet-proof and well thought out. If all he needs is one source and
one CR speaker level control a Mackie 1402 could do the job fine. I don't
even mind the VLZ mic pres in a pinch.

RE: Edirol M-16DX - mixer made it in. Initial response so far is pretty
favorable in the headphones (AKG240's), I'm not sure yet how things like
pres, mixbus/summing and headroom sit. Integrates well with SONAR on a
single core Toshiba tablet. Heck, it shipped with SONAR LE. Can be a USB
controller or can be a digital mixer or can be a soundcard via the USB
connect. Mixbus finalize FX... moderately ok I think.

Lot of missing info that the mixer has/does I didn't find on the net. Like,
making a big deal of the sweep/Q adjustable mid, and while that is cool,
they fail to mention the low/high EQ's are also EQ center adjustable, just
with no Q (duh, it's a pass filter?). The COSM FX are ok, nothing to write
home about, but good enough to put a little dimension on something. Tracking
ok, mixdown... yeah, not so much.

Not going to comment on the mic pres... yet. I need a little more time and
an A/B or two to feel comfortable with that. I have not heard the
hissing/noise complained about yet, but again... using headphones and
questionable *I'll use what I have in this room rather than go get the
better mics/sources. I just want to make sure it all works as it should,
shipped with the outer box ripped open.

More later... if you (or anyone will) request it. Keep in mind it was $300,
it ain't gonna be Paris quality.

Double A, thanks for the info. If I recall correctly, there was some "room"
or "speaker" eq correction feature. Anything on that?

Room correction, yup. Worked like a champ when I used it at my day gig.
I took it down to my Director to show him. He was quite impressed.

Very cool. Your'e not gonna believe this one. My friend was cleaning a closet
in his home and stumbled upon an old Mackie 16 channel mixer, bubble wrapped.
When he shared this info, I could not believe he could have forgotten he
had it. He's been in his home for about 5 years....jeesh! If only I could
be that lucky...errr...forgetful...lol! Thanks for the info.
