I've recently been working with a young lady named Candice
MacBlain, who gave me permission to post this song. Candice
wrote the piece, and played the intro bit, piano part, and sang.
I produced/engineered/arranged/sonically bastardized all the
rest. Hi-Res mp3 links attached.

Check it out... which version do you like best? (fairly subtle
differences, so listen on something other than PC speakers if
you can)

She sings pretty damn good, I think... so Enjoy!

The second one seems to have a bit more *big* to it. The first on has a
*sweetness* to it to my ears, especially noticable on the vocal. Both sound
very good. I voted for the second one.......until I voted against it. The
first one has a sittle somehing to it that I like more.

;o)

Deej, I'm torn, too... I like aspects of both. It's just a
different thing across the 2-buss... both mixes are Native ITB
mixes.

BTW, gang, Candice would like to know what you all think, too
(song, performance, etc), so all comments are welcome!

(well, except for comments like: "you obviously don't know how
to push an SSL".... and other unqualified shit like that.
lol)

AH HA!!!! so you applied different processing???? WTF did you do that for???
HTF are we supposed to tell the difference betwen an ITB mix and an ITB mix

Sounds great! I think they both sound great. I'd show case the vocals a
bit more, but that's me.

Not nearly enough melisma. Whitney that sucker up several notches,
then get back to us.

No?

Screw you then.

I agree, there is an intimacy to the first one, but I think I like the
"sweeter" vocal on the second one. However, I think the vocal is down
too much on the second one.

My vote is for the second one, but grab that "Candice vox" fader and
push it up a bit....

Otherwise, I like the song a lot.

LOL! I'll let he know - we need to have her yodel & I'll slam
the shit out of the Auto-tune :D

Really? You think the voice needs to come up some? I think it's
RIGHT there in the m*thaf*king pocket the whole time! (including
a couple of automation moves that kept it there)

Interesting. Point considered. Anyone else think the voice is
too low?

I like the second one the best.

IMHO, the vocals are not loud enough in either mix.
The keys also are a wee bit wet for my own taste. To me it makes things sound
less tight... or a little smeared. Not quite as noticeable in the second
mix though which is why I preferred it over number 1. Might not be as big
an issue if the vox is louder though.
Just my opinion.

She's great. Great voice. I really like the song. Great melody.

Nice job Neil.

Me!

Both sound great, but teeny nudge towards version two. More vocal on
both, especially against the piano.

Ummm... because if I processed them the same, there would be no
need to ask the question: "Which one do you like better?"

Well, I listened to them again today with fresh ears. I still like the first
one. The second one sounds a bit *harder* to my ears, especially as the mix
gets buiser and more dynamic with the added layers of pads and cymbal
swells. The first one sounds more "familiar" to me somehow with more space
in it as the mix builds.. the second one has an "in your faceness" that I
hear a lot in contemporary mixes so it actually might be a more commercially
viable mix. I do like the performances and I think she's got a very nice
voice. As far as the where the vocal sits in the mix, it think it works. It
is surrounded by quite a lot similar frequencies but is clear and
present/not buried. The only think I might suggest is dropping the piano by
about 3-4dB during vocal passages to give the voice a bit more "upfrontness"
without trying to boost it (and your RMS levels) to get it more up front.
Might or might not work, but it might be worth experimenting with.

Nice work,

;o)

Since you asked. But remember, this is all subjective and someone else might
hear things completely different.

Mix notes: I think the intro would sound nice starting with just piano and
maybe fade the low strings in on that phrase right before the first verse. A
more "traditional" piano sound (less chorus. electric sounding) would be my
preference too. Also, it might sound more "intimate" to bring the verb down
until the really big choruses and bridges towards the end of the song. I
think leaving the strings out until the second verse and chorus might give
the song more emotional impact. It seems to peak too soon in the first
chorus and the next few sections don't really have enough space to get huge.
I also think a nice shaker in place of the drums would be cool. Or maybe try
the drums in half time (i.e. kick, rest, rest, kick, kick, rest, snare,
rest). I hear a big ritardando on that last "laying naked beside you", and
then slow down the "entranced by the beauty of"sections (especially the word
entranced sounds rushed to my ears). I also agree with some of the others
that the piano could come down at times during the vocals.

Vocal notes: Candice has a nice voice. On the first verse, at the ends of
each phrase where she says "me" sounds a little forced. I think if she tried
to make the three notes on "me" less "in time" if would flow better. It's
also the case on the second verse where she says "walls". If she could do
those more like the word "lies" in the second verse, it would be good. Not
exactly the same, but I think you know what I mean. There is a little pitch
thing on the first verse at "And if you knew all the truths" that kind of
sticks out to my ears. Again, the "entranced" section at the end seems
rushed to me. She's got a nice, pleasing voice though.

I hope you take this all with a grain of salt. I think the song sounds good,
this is just some stuff I might try to change things up a bit. I'm just some
chump with a home studio though Neil, and another set of ears will hear it
all differently.

I do like the song.

Tony

There ya go. Make the waveform "On" and "Off". Think Rush's 'Vapor
Trails'. God, would I love to whack that mastering engineer upside
the head, and then give the tracks to a REAL mastering engineer.

I don't think it's too low by a whole lot, but I would like to hear it
in a more dominant position vs. the music. Don't slam the fader up,
just massage it a little.

At some point, I'd like to hear some more from her.

Wow - all the stuff you suggested was like a whole 'nother mix
& performance altogether... not saying what you're suggesting
isn't valid, but it's almost like saying: "Joe, you know that
part in: "Walk This Way" where you did: "da-da-da-DA, duh-duh-
duh-DA-Daaah... da-da-da-DA, duh-duh-duh-DA-daah, DAH!"...
well, you SHOULD'VE done: "Duh-DAAH-da-DAAAH-DAAH, dit, dit,
dit, dit, chinka-clang, chinka-clang", etc. It'd be like a
whole 'nother song! :D

Thanks, though!

What I'm really surprised at is: of the over 100 streams &
downloads that came from this newsgroup, no one here stepped up
& said: "Wow, that is like one of the most fucking amazing &
detailed female vocal sounds I've ever heard recorded!".

(because it's right up there, you know!)
