AMD Opteron 175 vs AMD 64 4400 x 2 [message #74344]

Senior Member

Both of these CPU's are rated the same (2.2GHZ per core) and both are socket
939 and this particular Opteron does not require ECC RAM. what, if any,
advantages would there be to running the Opteron. I've got a chance to pick
one up at a very *reasonable* price. I'd be running it on a Gigabyte
K8NS-Ultra 939 mobo. This is the mobo I'm going to be testing with Paris to
see if Paris I can get multiple C-16's running onb a dual core CPU. I am
considering buying an AMD 64 4800 x 2 for this rig but I'm just wondering if
the Opteron 175 would be equal to or faster.

If that Gigabyte MOBO has a ULI chipset (like mine does), I
would advise you to avoid it like the the plague, contracted
while experiencing an 7.8 magnitude earthquake, while playing a
round of Russian Roulette with an Uzi. This fucking thing is a
pigdogmuthafucka when it comes to stability, and I blame the
chipset, becasue i've NEVER had these kind of problems with
anything else

(can you tell my rig has gone south tonight for no apparent
reason?)

HI DJ,

Opteron is a little more over clockable but not much difference other
wise. Make sure you are using the newest BIOS before you pop in the
Dual-Core chip.
You should be able to quite easily overclock either the 440 or 175 to
the clock speed of the 4800.

Thanks Chris. I've got a friend here who has a small shop who does custom
rigs for offices and he's blowing out his AMD stuff and moving to the Intel
CoreDuo. By the time I woke up this morning the 175 was gone, but I just
picked up his last 4800 dual core for $200.00. That beats anything I could
find on EBay or Pricewatch.

The 4800 ought to go nicely in the Gigabyte K8NS-Ultra 939. I've actually
got two of these boards here and I'm going to likely swap out the ASUS
A8V-DLX on the SX rig with one of these and use the other one for Paris with
a 4200 x 2 I've got here if I can get it happening. Otherwise I'll go with a
3500 single core on the Paris rig.

I test drove a HP computer yesterday at Office Depot with a single Intel
Coreduo CPU. Even with all of the dogass proprietary crap that HP uses to
corrupt a perfectly good computer, it was scary fast and it was only around
$800.00 after rebates and this included a nice LCD monitor. I'll bet Dell
has something better for less $$, though I haven't looked yet. When those
Intel quad cores come out it's going to be a whole 'nuther ball game in the
audio world.....eh? I'm even thinking about buying a Mac (yikes!!!!).
There's a Mac store here, but the prices are 30% above Otherworld's prices.

Remember Thad was saying that the biggest issue with the
HP/Dell/Gateway/other off-the-rack stuff was the shared video
memory?
What if you just bought one of those & added a separate video
card... would that take care of that problem?

and it would upload an explosive .zip that would transmogrify directly from
