is that the levees broke, and wetlands had nothing to do with it - the Lake
just exceeded capacity - a hazard New Orleans has always faced - building a
city below sea level is a nightmare waiting to happen, unless you build
100ft high, 100ft deep concrete barriers all the way around.
Wetlands are not a sufficient barrier between a city and water, and the fact
that part of New Orleans was built on filled in marshlands doesn't help -
saturated ground, surrounded by water, below water line is prime territory
for flooding - it's only a matter of time. There were many articles and
speculation that New Orleans could not survive a major hurricane - the city
was living on borrowed time unfortunately. All the political blame in the
world won't change the fact that this disaster happened because of New
Orleans location. Blaming the government for this disaster is no more
grounded than blaming a the secretary of defense for allowing a tornado to
wipe out a farm in Kansas. Research also takes a bit of objectivity, both
scientific and political.
I'm with you guys on environmental conservation - the more the better
(wetlands included), but developers hate the idea, and an expanding
population isn't conducive to it. Catch 22. I just don't buy that saving
wetlands would have done anything to save New Orleans from a hurricane.
Save cranes and other water fowl? Sure - cool. The city? Not a chance.

If I had posted 2 weeks ago that a Metro city would be wiped out and Bush
wouldn't get anyone a meal or a drink for 5-6 days, you would have thought I
was crazy.
Now that it happens and you're willing to completely absolved FEMA of their

More fallacy. The fed supercedes the states when it comes to emergency

Did the tsunami victims fill out paperwork before the gov stepped in? Did
Iraq fill out paperwork requesting the troops before the gov stepped in?

You're absolutely crazy Deej.
My thoughts have been formed the last week primarily viewing mainstream
network news.
You're stuck in partisan mode, and somehow you think it's rubbing off on me.When I was living in New Orleans in the 80's there was a lot of discussion
about how the depletion of the water table was actually causing the city to
sink even farther below sea level.
The original city (the French Quarter and the area long St. Charles and
Carrolton known locally as *uptown*) survived this and always has survived
hurricanes. This is because the original founders of the city recognized
that they needed to build on the high ground. The surrounding suburbs are
drained wetlands. This whole area used to be a large dry knoll surrounded by
something similar to the everglades.

LA Times was the ones that put the information into a nice graph.
I'll attach the full image, per your very special request.
I think there is always credibility to a number of news sources, depending
on what they are reporting. Even the LA times. Politically speaking, if you
take the LA times and balance it's coverage with that of any number of other
news sources, you are likely to get something approximating reality, but
never from just one news source. For me to quote f\rom an approved list
would be bogus because I don't have one. I look at numerous sources and try
to cull a semblance of reality from different points of view. You post
articles here by a single source that happens to support your view. Fair
enough. It's suspect though because it's the same old crap every time. I see

Exactly. So how do you rectify that with your outragage at my source,
solely based on the source? You want to talk about credibility, yours is
being ripped to shreds, by your own logic.
Keep in mind I'm not a journalist. I'm a person with an opinion. Its not

I get the feeling you might just be copping out, but since you seem to be
asking me a question, I guess I can spell it out again.
You initially dismissed the simple information graph because it said LA
Times on it, then when pressed as to your preferred credible sources, you
said LA Times *could* be credible, and that all sources need to be
considered and balanced.
So your initial dismissal of the info was the bogus part.

checked back into this thread because I expected a cheap shot from you.
I'm in the process of setting up 10 mics for a tracking session but I'm
going to take a second here to clairfy your out - of -context spin of my
statement.
I said that there is always credibility to a number of new sources
*depending on what they are reporting*. The obvious bias of the LA times
calls their agenda into question. Had you been at all objective in your
thinking, you might have looked to more than one source before showing your
ass with something like this.
Now, whether you beileve it or not, I've got work to do.

Thats my hometown man.... Alternately known as The Union Leader / The
Useless Leader.
Either way it's the #1 paper in the state by far and almost 100%
conservative i.e. Pro Bush 1 / Anti Clinton... always Pro Republican
senators and Anti Democratic governors.
Nackey Loeb has taught me a lot about politics.Sorry amigo. I never failed to do anything other than play by some arbitrary
rule you have tried to esatblish here. As I said, I listen to many sources.
I sometimes form opinions from one or a number of them depending on whether

LOL... thats the funniest shit I've ever read.Guard's in Iraq, but it's needed here
By CARL HIAASEN
New Orleans is now nearly as dangerous and chaotic as Baghdad, where about
5,000 Louisiana National Guard soldiers have been helplessly watching the
hurricane tragedy back home on television.
Their presence would have been mighty useful in deterring the looters on
Canal Street and restoring order, but that task now falls to a
better-late-than-never coalition of Guardsmen summoned from other states.
The same is true in devastated Mississippi, which has a state National Guard
brigade attached to the II Marine Expeditionary Force in Iraq. As a result,
two battalions from the Alabama Guard were ordered to back up the 1,600
Mississippi Guardsmen who've been mobilized since Katrina struck.
It's another high price to be paid for the woefully mismanaged war in
Iraq -- the cities of our own homeland have been left to fend for themselves
after catastrophe strikes.
Everybody in south Miami-Dade who went through Hurricane Andrew in 1992 well
remembers that the turmoil and lawlessness subsided only after the National
Guard arrived.
Although it took too long for the main force to get here, the problem wasn't
a troop shortage caused by a contrived faraway war. The problem was a
sluggish government response.

For real...
I meant to say that in parenthesis.Hey all,
The problems this disaster has exposed go way beyond anything
the federal govt. or the president have anything to do with.
Entrenched, multi-generational corruption, patronage, cronyism,
ticket-punching bureaocrats, incompetence, cowardice, and more
corruption, all of it at the local and state levels is where the
primary responsibility lies.
No president, from any party, would have done a lot better. Sorry.
Kanye West is as dishonest as can be, and he, and you, Jason, are
race-pimping the blame where it does not belong. It is despicable
and pathetic. There were BLACK heroes all over NO, who, without
fanfare, a new SUV, or any bling, went around saving lives,
getting people out of attics and off of roofs. Others, faced with the
same needs and opportunities to serve others, instead became evil
predators, and scum like Kanye and other race-pimps excuse them,
EXCUSE them, with their hate for the president. It's just like the
Rodney riots, some do good, some do evil, but instead of
condemming the evil, the race pimps excuse it and blame the
president.
Understand this: I care much less about the insults and lies told
about Bush than I care about the great, big-hearted black people

You can't praise the heroes without acknowledging that black
people have the ability to choose love and righteousness in a
time of evil, so heroes are ignored so the race-hustlers can take
another dump on the president.
Shame on you.
If Clinton was in power, hell if Giuliani was in power, we certainly
would have had a more inspiring leader, and that is important,
but things would still be about where they are right now.
The hate of you guys. The pure hate you are showing. Man, you
should be ashamed of yourselves.

ade after decade,
to poor people in general and the descendants of African slaves in
particular. The world sees New Orleans burning and dying today, but the
televised anarchy - the shooting and looting, needless deaths, helpless rage
and maddening governmental incompetence - was centuries in the making.
To the casual viewer, the situation is an incomprehensible mess that
raises questions about the intelligence, sanity and moral worth of those
trapped in the city. Why didn't those people evacuate before the hurricane?
Why don't they just walk out of town now? And why should anyone care about
people who are stealing and fighting the police?
That hard, unsympathetic view is the traditional American response to
the poverty, ignorance and rage that afflict many of us whose
great-great-grandparents once made up the captive African slave labor pool.
In far too many cities, including New Orleans, the marching orders on the
front lines of American race relations are to control and contain the very
poor in ghettos as cheaply as possible; ignore them completely if possible;
and call in the troops if the brutes get out of line.
By almost every statistical measure, New Orleans is a bad place to be
poor. Half the city's households make less than $28,000 a year, and 28% of
the population lives in poverty.
In the late 1990s, the state's school systems ranked dead last in the
nation in the number of computers per student (1 per 88), and Louisiana has

s second-highest percentage of adults who never finished high
school. By the state's own measure, 47% of the public schools in New Orleans
rank as "academically unacceptable."
And Louisiana is the only one of the 50 states where the state
legislature doesn't allocate money to pay for the legal defense of indigent
defendants. The Associated Press reported this year that it's not unusual
for poor people charged with crimes to stay in jail for nine months before
getting a lawyer appointed.
These government failures are not merely a matter of incompetence.
Louisiana and New Orleans have a long, well-known reputation for corruption:
as former congressman Billy Tauzin once put it, "half of Louisiana is under
water and the other half is under indictment."
That's putting it mildly. Adjusted for population size, the state
ranks third in the number of elected officials convicted of crimes
(Mississippi is No. 1). Recent scandals include the conviction of 14 state
judges and an FBI raid on the business and personal files of a Louisiana
congressman.
In 1991, a notoriously corrupt Democrat named Edwin Edwards ran for
governor against Republican David Duke, a former head of the Ku Klux Klan.
Edwards, whose winning campaign included bumper stickers saying "Elect the
Crook," is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for taking bribes
from casino owners. Duke recently completed his own prison term for tax
fraud.
The rot included the New Orleans Police Department, which in the 1990s
had the dubious distinction of being the nation's most corrupt police force
and the least effective: the city had the highest murder rate in America.
More than 50 officers were eventually convicted of crimes including murder,
rape and robbery; two are currently on Death Row.
The decision to subject an entire population to poverty, ignorance,
injustice and government corruption as a way of life has its ugly moments,
as the world is now seeing. New Orleans officials issued an almost cynical
evacuation order in a city where they know full well that thousands have no
car, no money for airfare or an interstate bus, no credit cards for hotels,
and therefore no way to leave town before the deadly storm and flood
arrived.
The authorities provided no transportation out of the danger zone,
apparently figuring the neglected thousands would somehow weather the storm
in their uninsured, low-lying shacks and public housing projects. The poor
were expected to remain invisible at the bottom of the pecking order and
somehow weather the storm.
But the flood confounded the plan, and the world began to see a tide
of human misery rising from the water - ragged, sick, desperate and
disorderly. Some foraged for food, some took advantage of the chaos to
commit crimes. All in all, they acted exactly the way you could predict
people would act who have been locked up in a ghetto for generations.
The world also saw the breezy indifference with which government
officials treated these tens of thousands of sick and dying citizens, even
as the scope of the disaster became clear. President Bush initially shunned
the Gulf Coast and headed to political fund-raisers in the West.
That left matters in the bumbling hands of the director of emergency
management, Michael Brown, who ranks No. 1 on the list of officials who
ought to be fired when the crisis has passed. Even as local officials were
publicly reporting assaults, fires and bedlam at local hospitals, Brown took
to the airwaves to declare that "things are going well" as mayhem engulfed
the city. When asked about the rising death toll, Brown attributed it to
"people who did not heed the advance warnings." Brown's smug ignorance of
the conditions of the place he was tasked to save became the final door
slammed on the trap that tens of thousands of the city's poorest found
themselves.
The challenge for America is to remember the faces of the evacuees who
will surely be ushered back into a black hole of public indifference as soon
as the White House and local officials can manage it. While pledging
ourselves to remember their mistreatment and fight for their cause, we
should also be sure to cast a searching, skeptical eye on the money that
Bush has pledged for rebuilding.
Ten billion dollars are about to pass into the sticky hands of
politicians in the No. 1 and No. 3 most corrupt states in America. Worried
about looting? You ain't seen nothing yet.

OK, this has degenerated into the typical name calling BS that most NG's turn
to. I haven't read a single goddam thing about Paris in awhile on here.
Why don't you take your political crap over to general or find another NG

Bottom line, what are you PERSONALLY doing to help the situation?
Talk is cheap, especially political BS. Have you got evacuees in your town?
Are you doing anything to help? I do and I am.
.....and I take personal offense at you calling my buddy Doug an asshole.
Namecalling is the last resort of the chickenshit, so take it somewhere else
or do it to someone's face instead of shooting off your mouth on a forum.

dammit dude, chill out and actually do something to help. This political
tirade crap is tiresome. We all bleed red. This is about humanity, not politics.
