I don't know if this just started or if it has always been there...I have
been more focused or learning Cubase than listening to Cubase.
We are recording the Vox over those Nylon guitars this morning and I noticed
something last night while settings up and doing an equipment check....There
is very noticable phasing on the mic
thru the monitoring headphones.
I got a 3ms latency.
I thought man...am I hearing that? So I bumped the buffers down as far as
they can go..to 1ms..I could still hear it just the same. So that cant be
it.
I set my buffers back to 3ms.
I noticed some popping too which turned out to be my presonus wasnt clock
locked to my motu. After I clock locked it no more pops. Which brings me
to another part of the quest...
Initially I was running the mic thru the Presonus--ADAT out---Motu I thought
maybe the Presonus is doing this....so I plugged directly to the Motu and
same thing.
I tried using the Motu as the master clock and the presonus as the master
clock.
No change.
I twiddled with every setting I could find in Cubase that looked related
and no change.
I tried different microphones.
No change.
It sounds like there are two identical signals being sent to the main outs/headphones.
I thought hmmm maybe the Direct monitoring was some how enabled... But it
was disabled and I opened Cue Mix and disabled the main outs just in case
and closed it again.
No change.
I am sarting to think the Motu is defective.
I tried opening a new project and adding an audio track so I was sure there
was no processing...No Change.
It is very noticable on the headphones.
Not as noticable during playback, but I swear I can hear artifacts of it
on recorded vocal material.

Does anyone have a clue what this might be?

Check under your "device setup" menu in Cubase, is it possible
you've got the wrong driver selected? IOW you're using the MOTU
as your main niterface, but you've got a generic Windows ASIO
driver picked as the master (so it's passing sound, but not in
sync).

I would start there, then check all the other settings
under "devices" & related stuff.

You need to be using ASIO direct monitoring. Even at 1.5ms latency you will
hear some phasing because you are not only getting 1.5ms latency due to the
uffers, you are also getting around 1.5ms with your AD/DA conversion. As to
hearing this on previously recorded material, I don't know, but it sounds
like you've got some kind of loop with the recorded tracks being monitored
in the record enabled track. Ain't native fun?

Go to your control panel for you audio hardware and make sure ASIO direct
monitoring is enabled. then, in cubase, go to Device Setup and .set your
system for ASIO direct monitoring.

guys,
I forgot to mention that I had checked the ASIO driver.
I am using the Motu ASIO driver.

I swear that I can hear the phasing on recorded materials that I heard phasing
on in the headphones while monitoring. Not just any old recorded track. It
might be my mind thinking it hears it because I am afraid that I am gonna
hear it...know what I mean...Hmmm... If that is the case I am gonna try thinking
I hear an 1176..matby one will appear in my studio..(((making my Hiro Nokamora
face >~( )))

I used to have Direct Monitoring enabled...but if you recall one
of my last problems was.... not being able to use VST plugs on live material
or hear them in realtime on a track I was recording.
The problem was Direct Monitoring. So that is why I disabled it.
Which brings us to another problem...

I tried enabling Direct Monioting just to test if that was the issue. Every
time I would delect Direct Monitoring in the Decvice Setup Cubase would crash.
Why?
It used to function fine.

???
thx

DJ,
When I go to my MOTU device setup... I dont recall seeing anything about
direct monitoring, but there must be....
hmm...I will have to look around.. I might even have to get on the manual.

Do you have MOTU CueMix Console?

CuMix is a software console that allows zero (actually a few samples of delay)
latency monitoring using MOTU hardware. I use it with Digital Performer,
which controls it automatically. You should have a detailed manual that came
with the MOTU I/O box or the upgraded PCI card (if you have a new 424). This
is how you get rid of the recording delay, but not while using VST plugins.

HI Brandon,
If you are not using direct monitoring then have to make absolutely sure
you are not monitoring the source in the MOTU cure mix or anywhere else
other than the Cubase. If you are then you getting the original dry
hardware sound mixed with the delayed software. If you are then no
matter how low your latency is there will be some phasing or echo.

Guys,

Direct Monitoring is controlled by cubase on the Motu 8pre.
I got it working again.
The problem I had is you cant have a project open and switch direct monitoring
on and off willy nilly. With no project open I had no problem enabling direct
monitoring.
I got it working... I think that may have fixed the phasing, but
now I swear thru the CueMix Console the signal sounds...muddy..bassy...not
well defined.
Hmm... I will have to mess with it some more.
I am testing it thru a SM57 and a CAD LDC tube mic.
I did get the talk back function working which is cool.
I will have to get one of those nifty lapel mics or cheap computer mics to
install on my console for talk back.

So now back to the situation of getting some verb or other effects on the
live monitored sound?
How are you guys handling this?
Am I the only one who likes to record this way or what?
It really help me get into the mood of the performance when I juice up the
live feed a bit with effects that fit what I am trying to do...it isnt what
I end up keeping , but it help with the mood.

thx
b

I'm using control room studio mixes at 3ms latency and it works great here.
Effects and all.

Well we did the vox today.
I had it setup with direct monitoring.
I spent a couple hours getting familiar with the
whole setup so I was comfortable and able
to get around with it...

After the first take the vocalist asked for reverb.
So....out the door it went.
I had to switch back to the other method.
There was no problems.
Actually I didn't even try to hear any phasing.

The session went very well.
Very capable singer.
Stays on pitch pretty darn well.
The only issue I had was her dynamics were extreme.
I usually compress the vox to disk subtly.
Maybe 2db to 4db at the most.
She sang so softly in some parts and so loud in the others
that it took me a while to get the threshold just right.
She ended up spiking the comp with up to 8db-10db.
More than I like but it turned out well.
I suppose I could have backed off the ratio a bit, but I wasnt thinking.
To busy trying to "look" professional.
Anyway.
I got a nice foundation to mix with.
I am pleased with the tracking.
I would have liked for her to sing more harmony parts, but
she really didnt care for the song too much and wasnt willing to do more
than 5 takes total.
Oh well.
It will be fun mixing.
Thanks for all the help with this thread.
I will post the finished product when I get there.

the vocalist "always" asks for reverb...always. ;o)

This is why I absolutely love my Forssell CS-1. I can set it up with massive
amounts of compression and it will be transparent under all but them most
extreme circumstances.......plus, while it is compressing, something very
nice happens to the signal..

I am still using my RNC.
I have had very good success with it in Nice Mode.
However, if you dont watch it you can get a squashed sound quickly.
