Help!

My housemate and owner of the PARIS studio just got himself Pro Tools
M-Powered w/ an M-Audio Firewire 1814 to put together his demos in his
little upstairs workstation/studio. He really likes it (because he can make
it work), which is fine, except now he's talking about putting the same kind
of system in the main studio downstairs where PARIS has been my good buddy
for almost ten years.

This is crazy, right? I mean, are these things even in the same league?
I don't know, but PARIS been berry, berry good to me.

Maybe we can just get another patchbay and run them both?

Rrrrrr . . .

Why not run them both in that space if you can? If I were you,
I'd lobby for leaving the Paris PC the hell alone, setting up
another PC for PTLE, and getting: 1.) a switchout box to be
able to toggle between one PC & the other for the same
keyboard/mouse/monitor set. and 2.) another switchbox to enable
you to use the same monitor speakers for either rig. Let's face
it, a PC tower takes up about one square foot of floor space -
certainly these two systems can co-exist in the same space.

Me too. DO NOT let him jack around with a stable Paris DAW. Leave it
completely alone and just get a separate computer and, if necessary, a KVM
switch so you can share the keyboard, monitor and mouse with both
computers.. You'll likely need one anyway if it's PTLE since that's a native
system. Also, if you have a MEC with an ADAT card, you can sync the PT
system to your Paris rig and use them both.

Threaten him with random nurse sanctioned enema cocktails if he nixes the
Paris box.

Seriously though.... PT LE is not going to achieve the latency settings nor
the mixbus mojo that Paris has. If you track with any FX, that matters a
lot. If he's cool with tossing that, offer to buy the whole Paris rig as is
at market value and gloat. Better yet, export out the tracks as WAV from a
song from your last CD, and have him mix it in LE. Compare to Paris mix not
only sound but workflow. The gleam of the new LE will wear off pretty quick
at this point I bet. Also have him price LE plugs against the donation ware
and time proven plugs for Paris DSP.

Yeah, exactly! 1. Never dismantle a working installation, and 2. Never
leave a man behind . . . er, something like that. :)

Well, it's a very small control closet . . . uh, room, but I think he'll
listen to reason and keep the working PARIS system, especially if I share
all your professional opinions. Besides, I'm his arranger/co-producer, and
I'm working cheeep, so he has to keep me happy.

It has to be a separate computer, though, right? I mean, you couldn't put
PARIS and PT in the same computer with XP, cuz they'd fight, right?

I'm such a techie, eh? You can see why the thought of learning a new system
give me a panic attack. :)

Thank you, guys, you're all awesome

Sarah

Yes, thank you for that. More fuel for my "save PARIS" campaign. The PARIS

I'm with Aaron, and everyone else, but especially Aaron for suggesting that
you buy it.

Indeed, you may just find that if you offer to buy it so that you can use
it plugged in alongside his Protools then suddenly he might change his mind.
I don't think we need to prove to you that people are easily swayed by public
opinion, yet people tend also to follow leaders. If you show you are happy
to do your own thing, well...

But I do doubt that you could get something like what I heard on Wayward
soming out of Protools without a lot more effort. Personally I'm a Paris
fan not so much because it's "better" but because it's "me". It has advantages
and disadvantages, but I know what kinda of sound digital systems lead towards,
and IMHO your stuff belongs on Paris... or "real" analog.

What's the world coming to when I'm putting "real" in quotes when actually
talking about something real. Oh gosh.

Anyhow, best of luck.

PS. I could use a spare EDS card if he's selling. ;o)

Cheers,
Kim.

You could use the same computer with separate boot disks- one for paris
and one for PT.

I'd say that you'd be taking a chance on destablizing the whole rig if you
move any of the EDS cards around on the motherboard to make room for another
audio interface (which you will need since the Digi can't use the EDS card).
Working paris rigs are best left alone.

Also...tell him he's going to need to buy a Neve Portico 5042 to get
anywhere in the ballpark as far as the Paris mix bus mojo is concerned so to
get ready to pony up another $1400.00+ if he wants "that sound".

The big problem with this could be IRQ. Unless there is a free slot with a
free IRQ for the interface that will be needed for ProTools, then you will
need to start moving EDS cards around. If it's a multicard system, this is
where theings can come unglued.

There will be more to it than that. Hardware is going to change if they add
a FW card, and probably how the IRQ ranges are allocated.

cowbell while we're there (whereever "there" is)

I'll pick you up at the airport and drive! GC is only a 20 minute jaunt
and there is a sales guy there that I'd love to subject to your routine!

the 002 is FW, but if the computer doesn't have a Texas Iinstruments FW
chipset, it's not going to work without a FW PCI card.
