Hey Guys,
As I have posted before I am using Win 98, But for the last month I have
been looking for a computer that has XP, and I think I have found a gem.
My wife is a RN and about a year ago she became a traveling RN. Right now
she is working in Columbia, SC at The Richland Palmetto Health Hospital.
So one night she asked some of the other nurses if they knew where the Surplus
store was in the area, because she was “Looking for her husband” (That would
be me) a computer with something called XP. (Now that’s funny) So they began
to give her direction to the store, when another nurse joined in on the conversation
and said “I have one he can have. (Free)
So with all that said, will this work.
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2100 + 1.73 GHz
512 MB of Ram 1 AGP Slot 5 PCI Slot
Man! what a find. I Think
If this will work:
1 Should I run an Antivirus before installing Paris and then delete the
software? (Paris use only)
2 What should I delete from the system so Paris can run smooth?
3 What should I do or not do before installing Paris?

Personally, I'd wipe the system and use whatever system restore/Windows XP
disc came with it.. assuming one did. If not, then yeah download
http://free.grisoft.com the free version of AVG, complete scan/clean it, and
if you will never connect to the internet you can remove the program.
However, it's free so I would probably just kill the services when I start
up because you never know when a client might bring you a 'present' on a CD,
DVD or hard drive with their project. You'll also want to run a clean system
sweep for spyware. Windows Defender oughta cover that, and it's free also
from www.microsoft.com if you need it. While you're connected to the
internet, also check for any driver updates, but don't get 'feature rich' on
the software. Base drivers only. Don't get a bunch of windows updates
pertaining to security and network either, just slows down the system.
Memory serving, my Paris machine uses something like 0%~1% CPU at idle and
80 Mbytes of memory before launching paris. That is Service Pack 1 and no
internet/security updates... it 'never' sees the internet.
FWIW, I'm using an AMD 1900+ in my Paris rig on 512 RAM. A 600w power supply
was enough to run a UAD, 2 video cards and 3 EDS cards, if that helps you
guage power requirements.

Hey Aaron,
Thanks for the advice and no a disc did not come with it. I just brought
the Trend Micro Anti-virus plus Anti-spyware is this a good idea or not compared
to the one you recommend.

Hey Terry,
It could be a good idea to get a program like "Everest" by www.lavalys.com .
Then you can get all informations you need about your "new" XP computer,
what motherboard-type, what legal XP number, what kind of memory etc. etc.
etc.
I believe you also must change the powersupply. Get a 500-600 watts with a
big slowgoing lownoise fan, that can be used with that old board.

Well, this is interesting . . . I too have been running PARIS in Windows '98
on an old PII from the year 2000 or something, and I was also just given a
much newer computer with XP on in. I don't even know what's in it yet, cuz
I haven't fired it up or cracked it open, but the idea is to install our
other PARIS system in it. And I, too, am an RN, though not a travelling
one. I'll pay close attention to your responses, so I don't wind up asking
the same questions. :)

We're working on our second all PARIS CD album now on that same old beat up
computer, but in case anyone missed the first . . . it can be had at

a bunch of those other song downloading places.
CD #2 is called "Angel Food" and demo samples will soon be posted on our
site.

Hi Terry,
This sounds like a really good PARIS machine. Here's what I would do:
Partition the drive and have Windows 98 and Windows XP installed. You'll
need the installation CDs for both. You also need to be mindful that Windows
98 requires a third party driver to access a hard drive larger than 120GB.
The Windows XP driver can still be tempermental. Keep 98 around just in
case.
Also, Windows XP requires at least 1.25 GB of Ram to work well for Audio.
The disk cache will try to cache your whole project up to 1 GB, forcing
program code into the swap file and bogging down the machine if you only
have 1 GB or less. It drove me nuts until I got more than 1 GB.
